Check disk is a system tool in DOS, OS/2 and Windows. It verifies the file system integrity of a volume and fixes logical file system errors.
On windows NT operating systems it can also check the disk surface for bad sectors and mark them. The windows server version of CHKDSK can also fully recover data on bad sectors given that other disks in the set are intact.
CHKDSK mainly consist of three phases used to test file metadata. It is used to check for errors but wont fix them unless it is ordered too. This is the same for surface scanning witch it wont do unless it is requested.
CHKDSK is extremely time consuming and as a result windows implemented a new file system health model which allows for system errors to be fixed as soon as they are encountered. If the problem is found to be dangourus or problematic 'Action Center' lets the user know to take the volume offline as soon as is convenient.
