This stage begins at marriage, new marital tasks and responsibilities come up, couple establishes a home, family planning starts.

Stage 2: Child Bearing Stage/Families With Infants

This stage begins when the pregnant with first child. Couple begins planning for their new baby. New roles in the family, husband is now also dad, and wife is a now also mom. After baby is born both parents primary attention is given to them. Parents learn to share responsibilities and and manage conflicting demands. This stage ends when child reaches age of 3.

Stage 3: Families With Preschool Age Children

This stage begins when child turns 3. Primary attention is on child's growth, development, and intelligence. Parents begin to learn how, and enforce firm discipline along with how to support and guide their child emotionally and socially. Stage ends when child turns 5-6.

Stage 4: Families With School-Aged Children

This stage begins when the first child turns 6. Parents adjust to other parents at school, and need to continue to encourage their child's achieve. Children also have to adjust to the rules of school, and home, and overall become more responsible. This stage ends when child turns 13.

Stage 5: Families With Adolescents

Stage begins when child turns 13. Child grows older and starts to be more independent. Child begins to find and develop their personal identities. They need their space and freedom. Parents must learn to reason with child about their actions and decisions due to their newfound independence.

Stage 6: Families With Young Adults/Launching Stage

Child(ren) begin to become almost fully independent of the family. Parents help child(ren) become established in their homes and careers, and their new lives in general. Child(ren) leave home and family size dwindles. Communication patterns change, and ultimately lessen.

Stage 7: Middle Years

Parents begin to focus on each other and themselves instead of their children. They begin to prepare for retirement, and many become grandparents.

Stage 8: Aging Family Members

Couple adjusts to retirement, this can mean spending more time with one and other and engaging in more activities, many learn new skills and hobbies. This also means dealing with old age and declining health. Adult children care for them in their old age. Stage ends when both partners die.
