As I was reading this book I kept thinking about how the main character, Madeline Whittier, is taking a huge risk by going outside. She has an extremely rare illness where she can get really sick from about anything, yet she still takes the risk and puts herself in danger for love. Since taking risks is such a huge aspect of this novel, I have picked the following resources regarding the novel.
1st Resource: The first resource I chose was the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, which was directed and starred in by Ben Stiller. The movie is about Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller), who lives a boring life working for Life Magazine, often daydreaming about crazy adventures he could have. One day he decides to take a huge risk to find a perfect photo for Life Magazines last publish. He goes on a great adventure and encounters crazy thing and eventually living his daydreams. I choose this movie because it directly refers to the theme of taking risks.
2nd Resource: The second resource I chose was the song Space Oddity, by David Bowie. I choose this song because when I listen to it, it makes me feel like I am about to do something crazy and take a great leap of faith. The song itself is about the extraordinary leap of faith which is space travel.

J.D. Salinger was born on January 1, 1919 and died on January 27, 2010. His full birth name was Jerome David Salinger and he grew up in Manhattan, New York. In his early life he was always starring in plays at school and even wrote for his school newspaper. His father opposed of him becoming an actor and sent him to Valley Forge Military Academy in Wayne, Pennsylvania. There he began writing short stories every night under the covers and partook in many clubs as well. In 1936 he graduated high school and began his freshman year at New York University. He wrote Catcher in the Rye after his time in the war and it became a huge success, reprinting 8 times only two months after it's release. It also spent 30 weeks in the New York Times Bestsellers list. Although the huge success, the book received tons of backlash for its excessive use of amateur swearing and course language and was banned in many countries and some U.S. schools. It is regarded as the most censored book across the nation and the second most frequently taught book in schools. After the release of the book Salinger became somewhat of a recluse and basically disappeared from the media, but he still released other works in the years following.

1st Resource: When looking at my book choices on the book bingo sheet I saw a free choice space and I originally did not know what to read. I initially thought to pick a book that was an easy read that had a few numbers of pages, but I then thought back to the summer reading assignment, Where Things Come Back. In the book, the main character has a brother named Gabriel whose all time favorite book is The Catcher in the Rye. He has read it over 200 times. So I decided to read it as my free choice book because of an allusion to Where Things Come Back.
2nd resource: For my second resource, I feel like the movie Rebel in the Rye relates to the novel a lot. The movie is about J.D. Salinger and his experiences after the war as he is writing The Catcher in the Rye. The movie really gives you insight into the life of Salinger and how his experiences have shaped the pages of The Catcher in the Rye. You get to see how Salinger's thoughts and desires are reflected in the main character Holden Caulfield and how Salinger's life manifested the novel into what it is today.

Raquel Jaramillo Palacio was born on July 13, 1963, in New York City. He parents immigrated to the United States making Palacio a first-generation American. She grew up in Queens, New York and attended The High School of Art & Design in Manhattan. After high school, she attended the Parsons School of Design and decided to major in illustration. For her junior year, she attended The American University in Paris, traveling as much as she possibly could before heading back to New York. She decided on pursuing illustration as her career, having designed thousands of covers to children's books. Although she had an amazing career in illustration she began writing for a change. Wonder was her debut novel and has sold over 5 million copies since it's release back in 2012 and has also been on the New York Times Bestsellers list since its release. Palacio found the idea of the novel in autumn of 2007 when she and her two sons encountered a girl with Treacher-Collins syndrome, the same condition the main character of the novel has. She wrote the book to show kids how to treat anyone that is different than them; with kindness.

Wonder's utmost success has brought Palacio to publish follow up novels and children books that correlate to the original wonderful masterpiece. Some of her other works include 365 Days of Wonder: Mr. Browne's Book of Precepts, Auggie & Me: Three Wonder Stories, and We're All Wonders. 365 Days of Wonder was published on August 24, 2014, and is comprised of one year's worth of life lessons and principles from Auggie's extraordinary English teacher Mr. Browne. Auggie and Me was released on July 20, 2015, and tells the same story of Auggie's first year in public school, but from three different perspectives. It also gives insight into the minds of Auggie's classmates and lets you feel and see from their perspective. We're All Wonders was originally published on March 28, 2017, and is Palacio's most recent work. The book is the children's version of the heart-throbbing story we all know. It was written and illustrated by Palacio.

Wonder is truly about the pursuit of kindness and happiness. After all, on Auggie's first day of school the precept Mr. Browne gave the class stated, "If you have a choice between being right and being kind, choose kind." That precept influenced the rest of the novel and set the tone of Auggie, his friends, classmates, and family.
1st Resource: I was thinking about kindness and happiness one night while listening to music. The book is all about coming together and being kind no matter everyone's differences. I decided that the song "Imagine" by John Lennon had a strong relationship to kindness. Lennon sings about diminishing all differences in our world and people coming together, living life in peace. Every time I listen to it I feel happy and warm inside, the same way I felt when I finished Wonder.
2nd Resource: Of course I have to put the live-action adaptation of the book as my second resource. The movie adaptation of Wonder was directed by Stephen Chbosky and stars Jacob Tremblay as Auggie. It is an amazing adaptation of the heartfelt book and does a great job painting a picture of Auggie's world. It is spot on compared to the book and it makes me happy to see a movie come from this amazing book.

The Lightning Thief is really about discovering one's true identity. At the beginning of the novel, Percy views himself as not smart and a bad kid. He does not know who his father is and he does not truly know himself. Throughout the novel Percy learns who he really is and discovers thing about himself he never thought possible. He discovers that what he thought were his weaknesses are really his greatest attributes and are what makes him special.
1st resource: The first resource that I have chosen is the movie based fro the novel. The movie follows near the exact same story and is titled the same name. It was released on February 12, 2010 and stars Logan Lerman as Percy Jackson. I really did find joy in watching this movie because it gave a live action representation of the novel. Logan Lerman played Percy just how I imagined him while reading the novel. One the other hand, the movie did leave out some important details that happened during their quest, which I did not like. Also, another difference I noticed was in the movie the characters were significantly older. Overall I did like the movie and enjoyed watching it after I read the book.
2nd resource: I chose to read because this book because I have always found the stories of Greek mythology interesting. Last summer, I went to visit my Aunt Barbara in New York. While I was there we decided to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The museum has a Greek and Roman art section that we attended. It was amazing to see all the statues that date all the way back to the Neolithic period. It was amazing to get some insight on Greek and Roman influence. Visiting the museum helped me some aspects of the book even more, which makes me really happy that we decided to go.

Lois Ann Hammersberg was born on March 20, 1937 in Honolulu, Hawaii. She and her family moved from Honolulu to Brooklyn, new York in 1939, when Lowry was just two years old. Her father was an Army dentist so the family was always moving places. Lowry attended kindergarten at the Berkeley Institute but relocated in 1942 to her mothers hometown, Charlisle, Pennsylvania. Her family moved there because her father was deployed to the Pacific during World War II. She relocated a few more times throughout her early life, even living in Tokyo, Japan at one point. Lowry went to Pembroke College in Brown University for two years until she married Donald Grey Lowry at age 19. They had four children together and also moved around a lot because Donald was also in the military. They settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts when Donald left the military to attend Harvard Law School. Once Donald finished school the family moved to Portland, Maine. Lowry decided to go back to school to achieve her degree in English literature. She attended University of Southern Maine in Portland in 1972. After receiving her bachelors she continued her studies at her Alma Matter. She finally began to write professionally and published her first book A Summer to Die in 1977. She divorced Donald Lowry that same year, and two years later moved to Boston, Massachusetts. She met Martin Small there, and spent thirty happy years with him until his death in 2011. Number the Stars was released in 1989. It was instantly a huge success and the following year, in 1990, it was awarded the Newberry Medal.
Two Additional Resources Regarding the Novel

A major theme of this book is the power of true friendship. The main characters, Annemarie and Ellen, have such a strong bond despite their difference in religion. They would have each others backs no matter what the case is. Annemarie even saves Ellen's life which could not have happened if they did not have the bond that they share together.
1st Resource: When I think of true friendship I think of one particular song: Lean on Me by Bill Withers. I personally love this song because it can really make you feel happy when you are down and give you hope to carry on. The hook of the song states, "Lean on me, when your not strong And I'll be your friend I'll help you carry on." Those words remind me of Annemarie and Ellen's bond. They will always help one another because they truly care for each other.
2nd Resource: Friendship is truly the greatest aspect in this story. The book, The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas has the same theme of friendship in it. The Boy in the Stripped Pajamas is about the friendship of two boys, one Jewish the other the son of a Nazi. The boys' loyalty and faithfulness to one another despite their religious backgrounds and circumstances is a lot like the friendship that is in Number the Stars. I have read both books and I thinks that they relate to each other in many ways.
