Choose one (or all!) of the story starters below and let your imagination run wild. This is your chance to craft a gripping story full of mystery, magic or transformation!

📌 Your Task:

Pick a story prompt, plan your adventure, and write a detailed, descriptive story. Use your best vocabulary, interesting sentence openers and powerful imagery to hook your reader.

The Magical Holiday

You discover a glowing, talking map tucked inside your suitcase. It reveals a secret destination no one else knows exists...

Suggestions to level up your writing:

Create a magical guide or companion (a phoenix? A moss-covered turtle who speaks in riddles?).

Describe the setting using all five senses - What does the air smell like? How does the ground feel beneath your feet?

Use powerful verbs and figurative language (The cave mouth yawned open... The sky shimmered like silk...).

Mystery at Midnight

Something wakes you - a creak, a crash, a whisper - and you spot something unbelievable happening outside your window...

Suggestions to build suspense:

Begin with short, dramatic sentences. Vary the pace to match the tension.

Use onomatopoeia (CRACK! WHOOSH! TICK-TICK…) to bring your scene to life.

Let the reader feel your character’s emotions - Is your heart racing? Hands trembling? Or are you sneaking out for a closer look?

Animal Switch!

You wake up in a completely different body… you're an animal! Suddenly, the world looks and feels very different.

Suggestions for writing in role:

Use first person (“I”), and describe your thoughts, instincts and senses.

What are your strengths or struggles now? (Soaring through clouds? Chasing prey? Dodging humans?)

Reflect on how being an animal might change the way you think about the world around you.

🧠 Top Tips:

Plan your story: setting, characters, problem, and resolution.

Use a mix of dialogue, action and description to create interest.

Challenge yourself to use ambitious vocabulary and figurative language (similes, metaphors, personification).

Edit and improve your work before creating he finished piece.
