Chronic wound healing is a challenge that affects many patients in the healthcare field. There are three main categories in which chronic wounds are divided into: venous leg ulcers (VLUs), diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), and pressure ulcers. There are multiple types of dressings that have been made for chronic wounds based on their conditions. Currently there are limits on the dressings that are used for wounds because they cannot "actively respond to variations in the wound environment." A major limitation of the products we use for wound care is that they cannot give us information about how the would is healing. Another limitation is that current wound care products cannot tell the difference between certain stages of wound healing. Researchers have developed many sensors that can measure certain biomarkers that are in the wound environment such as the pH of the wound, temperature, oxygen, moisture, mechanical and electrical, and enzymes. Knowing the pH of the wound is important because it helps us understand the status of the wound. An elevated pH of the wound could be a sign of infection. The temperature of the wound is important because it can tell us information about its "healing, inflammation, and oxygenation." Sensors that show the oxygenation of a wound are important because if the wound is not getting enough oxygen it could effect the healing process. Sensors that show the moisture in a wound can help reduce inflammation and improve the revascularization of the wound. The mechanical and electrical parts of a wound change in response to any disorders or diseases during the healing process. Lastly enzymes can indicate abnormalities in the wound. Automated wound dressing can help improve effectiveness of therapy and help improve a patients comfort. In conclusion, chronic wounds have created a major problem in the healthcare system. There have been efforts made to develop more effective therapies to treat wounds. These efforts include identifying growth factors, proteins, and drugs that can help improve the process of wound healing. Wearable electronic devices that deliver drugs to the wound bed have recently started to be used. The recent emerging of automated bandages is expected to change clinical practice. They can sense and deliver therapies automatically to help improve the patients comfort and reduce wound complications.

I think there are many advantages to smart bandages but also some problems that will be encountered using them. They will help improve healing and can help lower the amount of infections. They can monitor temperature, moisture, and how much bacteria is in the wound which will help in detecting infections early. They can also have medicines put into the smart bandage. Even though the cost of smart bandages is initially expensive in the long term they could reduce hospital visits and minimize complications people have when it comes to wounds.
