Assessments were given and conducted every year for six years starting at first grade. The teachers were also given questionnaires every spring with a 1-5 scale to report the findings of using social support or conflict with different children. In those six years measures of achievement were given individually to the students at school, as well as assessing IQ and externalizing behavior.

The study found that girls tend to have an overall more supportive and less of a conflicting relationship with their teachers than the boys, but the conflict seemed to be more detrimental to the girls achievement than it was for the boys. To contrast the last finding the study also found that low achievement of boys was associated with low warmth, but not with the girls.

I believe the study was very diverse with the students they tested or overlooked which created a variety of fair assessments and a better understanding of the results. But I believe the study could have studied less changing variables in order to better understand and receive clearer results on the effect of student- teacher relationship. I also do not think that giving students tests is always the best or most effective way to measure academic achievement in students, especially ones who are at-risk or low-income, and minority families.
