C - In this extract the character of Antonio, his friendship and risk is established through many language and dramatic conventions such as language and character. As proven in this exact Antonio displays a close bond of friendship and kindness towards Antonio. This is shown when Antonio doesn't think twice about the loan that Bassanio intends to ask for. He is ready to help even though he hasn't acquired the money yet. This is proven when, "myself, and my entire fortune all stand ready to help you." The evident language convention used here proves that Antonio is a willing, kind and generous friend. The words such as "entire fortune" and "stand ready to help you" conveys to the reader that Antonio is a very loyal friend and also very genuine. Following on from this, Antonio's risk is well recognized in this extract through his dialogue as he states he stands ready to help bassanio's at whatever cost or circumstances it takes. This was a huge risk to take and a very bold one as he declares he would go to his last string to help his good mate Bassanio. In return, Antonio doesn't get any support or formal approval from Bassanio proving this risk to be more daring.

A - Shylock's character is undoubtfully proven through stubbornness, and unmercifulness. This is established though the analogies and metaphorical language Shylock uses when demanding his penalty to the judge. His explicit words, "Let them be free marry them to your heirs! You would answer, the slaves are ours. I give you the same answer." This analogy of the slaves being let free and able to inherit an aristocrat's wealth and superiority shows that shylock himself would not give up his rightfully earnt penalty for an infinite amount of ducats. Also, his unforgiving language and demanding tone proves his unmercifulness. This is when he fiercely demands a judgement from the law weather he is able or unable to have his penalty, "I'm demanding a judgement. Answer me. Shall i have it?" He is so fixed on the response of the judge and court he lashes out with anger and demandment proving his unmercifulness in the face of the penalty.

In this extract the character of Bassonia is established through many themes such as wealth, friendship and risk. Bassanio is willing to risk everything to gain everything. This is shown by Bassanio willing to loose Portia and Antonio or gain Portia and Antonia. Double or nothing. This is stated when Bassanio "In my childhood, when I lost one arrow, I shot another of the same type, in the same direction, with a more careful eye in order to find the other. And by risking both, I often found both." This shows that Bassanio owns Antonia money and he has lost it so now he has to be more careful and get the money back to Antonia by keeping very close eye on it.

Extract C: In this extract, Bassanio is established through the theme of Love and Stubbornness. Bassanio is Lovestruck by Portia, a Rich Heiress who live in Belmont, who he has almost no chance of being with. In the text, Bassanio is L This is where the theme of Foolishness comes in to play, as he wishes to borrow 3,000 ducats, a large sum at that time in the Elizabethan era, to have a chance to win over Portia's heart to marry her. He takes a foolish chance at Love and eventually risks his friend Antonio's life for these 3,000 ducats.

Here is my analysis: Short Answer
Extract C

In the scene Antonio's character is established through the numerous themes such as wealth, friendship and risk. In Act 1 scene 1 Bassanio is talking to Antonio about a girl which he likes (Portia). However, the girl he like is in a higher hierarchy class (upper class) compared to Bassanio who is in the Middle class. Antonio's character is established through wealth as he is willing is share his money with Bassanio to 'show' his/prove his wealth to the girl (Portia). This is proven when Antonio states "You may be certain that my money, myself, and my entire fortune all stand ready to help you.". This proves that Antonio shows friendships to his friends.

Another example of Antonio's character being established is through his risk. Antonio made a deal that Skylock would lend Antonio 3,000 ducats (for Bassanio) and if the deal wasn't payed back, then Shylock could take a pound of flesh from Antonio. Antonio has all of his money in ships and is confident that he will get them back to pay the loan. However, Antonio character is established through risk as he is putting all of his chance/luck in all of the ships coming back to port in 3 months to pay off the loan.

In this extract the character of Antonio is established through numerous themes including friendship, wealth, and risk. Antonio is a great friend to Bassanio as he agrees to lend a large sum of money even though he does not have it yet. He is a risk taker when agreeing to make a deal with Shylock where an outcome is that a pound of flesh is cut of from his breast. He has a huge fortune as seen in the first paragraph of the extract where he says "...my entire fortune all stand ready to help you". This shows his traits of friendship and wealth. This shows Antonio's character through this extract and that he is a great friend, a risk taker, and that he has a huge amount of wealth

Antonio being very good friends with Bassanio, he lends money to Bassanio a great deal of money for him to try and win portia's hand.

In the extract the character of Antonio is shown to be extremely forthright in his willingness to help Bassanio. This is established through his use of language in his speel toward Bassanio. In this extracts he states that he is willing to support Bassanio with his "entire fortune", this however is stated despite the fact that Bassanio had not disclosed what he wants support with. The trust that Antonio has toward Bassanio and his character trait of helping others financially is reinforced in this extract when Antonio gets mildly offended when Bassanio "doubts [his] willingness to help", by Bassanio telling Antonio a story to convince him to help him financially this demonstrates that Bassanio doesn't think

In this extract Bassanio is established as quite stubborn and foolish and can be observed through both his dialect and backstory. At this stage in the story he is deeply indebted to both Antonio and others and thinks that the best way to pay off debts is take more loans out to pay off his other debts. He uses the analogy "In my childhood, when I lost one arrow, I shot another arrow of the same type in the same direction." What Bassanio is attempting to convey is that if Antonio is to give him more money to be eligible to court Portia then intern using their collective wealth he could pay off his debts. This, like all gambling, is incredibly risky because he is not guaranteed to marry Portia as the candidates have to choose from different caskets. Bassanios' flawed logic is leading him to make some terrible decision without much thought. Antonio does not help with this logic as he is more than happy to lend his good friend Bassanio money. Bassanio then goes onto say "I'll either find both or bring back your second take again and gratefully remain your debtor to your first loan," when referring to the loans that he has taken out. It is unclear whether Bassanio is only trying to court Portia for her money or whether he truly loves her but it seems likely that he is in love because she is described by himself and others as beautiful.

A- In this extract, Shylock demonstrates several themes. Some of these themes include revenge, law and mercy. Revenge is demonstrated when Shlock turns down the thought of 36,000 ducats just to have a small portion of revenge on Antonio; "If every ducat in 6,000 ducats were divided into 6 part, and every part was a ducat, I would not take them, I would demand my penalty." We here see that Shylock is a merciless person who acres about revenge more than money. An example of the narrative theme law in this extract is when Shylock says to the Duke "If you stop me, damn your law! The laws of Venice are not enforced." Showing that the law plays a large part in this play, and especially in Shylock getting the revenge he feels he deserves. The final theme displayed in this extract in this fragment is mercy. The idea of mercy is brought up in this extract by the duke, asking "How can you hope for mercy when you have none?" This is addressing Shylock asking him how he can hope for mercy when he is not willing to show any at all towards Antonio.

B- We can see from this extract that Shylock is a greedy and selfish man. In this extract we get an insight of Shylock's personality, seeing things like greed and self pity. He shows that he is pitiful when we find out that his daughter has left him, saying "my own flesh and blood to rise against me!". He does not care about his daughters thoughts, and can not believe that she does not want to live with him, labelling it betrayal. This shows us that Shylock cares more about himself than anyone else.

C-
In extract c, the overarching theme of friendship and money are talked about. Money is more certainly a large part of the whole play, and especially this extract. Debt and loans are mentioned several times " about paying off all the debts I owe." "and gratefully remain your debtor for the first loan" In these quotes the pair are talking about getting loans to try and reach the high enough amount of money so that Bassiano can get with Portia. "Oh my Antonio, if I just had the money to hold my own as one of the suitors, I have the feeling that I would be so successful that I would certainly be rich!" This of course is inferring that Bassiano would be successful in winning over Portia, if he had the money, that he would also become rich.

Salarino is established early in this book as a nice man who is there to help support Shylock about his daughter and the reason she left with a christian. He reassures him that everything will be alright and that all children will eventually move away from their parents. For example, in Act 3, Scene 1 Salarino states, "There is no difference between your flesh and hers than between black and ivory; more between your blood and hers".

Extract C:
In extract C the character qualities of Antonio can be seen using various themes. Antonio displays tight friendship traits between Bassanio when he seeks financial support from Antonio in order to impress Portia. Antonio willingly borrows money from the money lender (Shylock) to satisfy his friends wants. The theme of risk is established when Antonio hands over the money that he yet doesn't have to give. Antonio relies on his ship to come back to repay Shylock. Antonio knew there would be a price to pay if he didn't stick to his word, but his friendship with Bassanio was worth more than his fortune.

Extract A:
In extract A, Shylock displays many themes in order to create his character for the audience. Themes include; Revenge, Law and Mercy. Revenge is portrayed when Shylock turns down the offer of 36 000 ducats after Antonio wasn’t able to repay the 3000 ducats he loaned from Shylock, instead Shylock requests a pound of flesh. "If every ducat in 6,000 ducats were divided into 6 part, and every part was a ducat, I would not take them, I would demand my penalty." Here is a fine quote demonstrating Shylocks entitlement to receive what he wants.

Extract A additionally portrays the theme of law when you see Shylock questioning that the laws of Venice aren’t enforced and that he has the money to get his way. "If you stop me, damn your law! The laws of Venice are not enforced." This quote proves Shylocks Arrogance and inability to be flexibly in times like these.

Finally, extract A portrays the theme of mercy when he is informed by the “judge” that if he were to extract the tiniest bit over 1 pound he would suffer the same consequence he issued. Shylock immediately realises he’s in the wrong and lets the situation unfold naturally.

Extract C: In the extract, Antonio is seen as very kind, considerate and willing to help out his best mate Bassanio this supports the theme of Friendship. During the text he is constantly expressing his willingness to help Bassanio to try and win Portia's love. We see this in the text when he says , "you may be certain that my money, myself, and my entire fortune all stand ready to help you.". But he is not that rich... yet. This then leads me onto the theme of risk. All of Antonio's money and possessions are out at sea and he is taking a very, very big risk to try and help Bassanio with his financial and romantic problems and he just won't let up! He is constantly reiterating his willingness to help out Bassanio when he expresses, "You know that all I have is tied up at sea, and I don't have money or property by which I could raise money immediately." He is just to trusting in the fact that he will get his fortune from his ships out at sea. This then leads onto the theme of trust. "I'm certain i'll get it, either on the basis of my good credit or on friendship. Antonio is now saying that he would do anything to get Bassanio his money and which later on, leads to some major problems which nearly cost him his life.
