         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Meiji Restoration was the revolution in 1868 in which Emperor Meiji assumed the throne and restored imperial rule, giving the hundreds of years of feudalism via the Tokugawa shogunate. It was supported by samurai and leaders of the Satsuma and Choshu domains, such as Saigo Takamori and Kido Takayoshi, who desired the modernization of Japan and to safeguard it from Western powers. This period brought large changes: socially, the rigid class system was abolished and greater equality was given; economically, it rapidly industrialized by building factories, railways, and modern industries; while politically, a strong central government and a new constitution came into being. It was in these ways that Japan grew to be powerful and truly modern.</p>]]></description>
