Technology Concerns in the English classroom.

I struggle with getting my high school English students to use their technology for good. All of my students use MacBooks for all classes and work. They can be very helpful when it comes to essays and research, but they can also be a big hinderance to students attention spans. It is hard to track how much work is being done and how much play is being done during class/work time.

Management Software

One option you might consider is asking the district about some type of management software that is installed on all student machines. Most of these programs will allow you to see individual student screens, to control their machines, and to even freeze screens if needed. There are many product similar to Insight. Some are more cost effective than others.

I agree that it is very important for students to use technology appropriately. It is important for teachers to actively monitor the students.
- Alisha Moad

This can be a source of contention with teachers. I would love to be able to have a computer monitoring system for my classes. The business classes, onlinec computer labs have a monitoring system on their compters which is very nice. Here is a link to the Google App store for a Chrome version for Classroom Management Software. I have found that if I have a class that is having real problems staying on task with computer usage I will break the task in to mini check points and do a quick clipboard check during class or I have evend completed a surprise clipboard check duirng class. (Clipboard check: I walk around the room and mark off if they are making progress and working on the assignment).

I have had the same issue. I did a trial version of Netop Vision and loved it. It is 4.60 per student though and in a high school, that can get expensive. I loved that I could draw students attention by essentially shutting down their computer, pushing out links, sending messages to their screens and monitoring their use.

I would recommend limiting time with the laptops if they are becoming a hindrance. Limiting time will cause a sense of urgency to emerge when the laptops are available. This can happen through a variety of methods such as activities that are independent from laptops.

You may bring up the program Hapara to your district! It integrates with Google Classroom and collects data from that to allow you to lock student screens for set periods of time as well as let you view what they currently have up whether it be on or off task. It is super useful, especially when giving class time for papers or tests!
