Question 3:What images does the poet use? How do the images relate to one another? Do these images form a unified pattern (a motif) throughout the poem?-Audrey Sammartano

The poet uses a lot of imagery from nature. I think this was to help convey the message of freedom. The speaker even mentions becoming one with the earth after he's gone, "I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love,". This is a constant pattern throughtout the poem.

Question 5: Are there any symbols? What do they mean? Are they universal symbols or do they arise from the context of this poem? - Audrey Sammartano

The main symbol in this story is the hawk. The wild animal represents freedom and living with no restraints. The narrator tries explains this thought by comparing himself to the bird by saying, "I too am not a bit tamed, I too am untranslatable..." . The birds wildness represents living a carefree life.

Question 1: What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic? - Joy Bajjali

The poem's tone is kind of light hearted because its almost as he is waiting for the day he dies to be "let back into the universe." Because in stanza he says, "It flings my likeness after the rest and true as any on the shadow’d wilds, It coaxes me to the vapor and the dusk." Which in my opinion he seems not be worried at all. Also in stanza 10 he also says, "I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love." In my opinion this poem is very ironic because in general everyone is scared of death and the fact that it is unknown. But he seems to be sure of whats going to happen to him when he dies and he seems to be looking forward to it. In stanza 10 and 15 he states, "I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love, ... Failing to fetch me at first keep encouraged, Missing me one place search another, I stop somewhere waiting for you."

Question 6: What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea. - Joy Bajjali

I think the main idea of this poem is about living a good life because at the end were all just going to die. But I also think there might be a different theme which is we are all going to come back after we die. What I mean is that Walt Whitman think after the human dies they come back to earth in a different of anything this like grass, and animal (like the hawk he used in his poem). "I depart as air, I shake my white locks at the runaway sun, I effuse my flesh in eddies, and drift it in lacy jags. I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love, If you want me again look for me under your boot-soles."
