I would say Polonius because he treated her as if she were a child, Ophelia was very obedient and even if she didn't agree with his orders she still followed, she looked up to him regardless of having to push Hamlet away and then afterwards feeling Hamlet's neglect of never loving her. She still dealt with it and it would seem as if she were more focused on her father's approval of her than her own opinion, as if she didn't have a mind of her own. Which Polonius would be to blame since after all he never once considered asking what she thought was best and so she was conditioned that way. In (1,3,105-109) Polonius tells her " then I'll tell you  believe that you are a foolish little baby for believing these -offers- are something real. Offer yourself more respect, or- not to beat this word to death- you'll offer me the chance to be a laughing stock". She should have listened to her Dad's warnings about Hamlet. And no one can control anyone's thought process. So yes her fathers death was a huge breaking point for her but no one but herself could make her insane. I fear that if her dad was still alive she would've had this breakdown already because of the fact that Hamlet took her virginity without marrying her. And calling her a wh*re in the process..(he didn't say the word but with his reasoning you could just tell what he meant) yes that can mess with anyone but it isn't a fact that everybody would go insane over this kind of situation. Harsh yes but, yeah.. and I'm not even saying this to like drag her or anything. I'd be mad too I'm on her side 100%. Throughout the book, Hamlet expresses the “ love “ that he has for Ophelia and he recently told her that his feelings had changed and he feels barely anything for Ophelia anymore. Wether Ophelia knows it or not, Hamlet murdered her father, which has pushed her over the edge and sent her into a spiral of grief. In the film Ophelia reveals that she lost her virginity to Hamlet after he promised to marry her if she did what he wanted.  In (4.5.50-55) Ophelia says “ He let in the girl, and when she left. She wasn’t a virgin anymore.” The combination of losing her father and being betrayed by a man she thought loved her pushed her to her limit. Hamlet's inconsistency with his affection towards her and her father's claims of her being her own person and knowing what she wants along with his death has plagued her mind and sent her into a spiral of grief that drove her mad. In the movie and book, Ophelia sings and states "They carried him uncovered in the coffin. hey non nonny." (4-5-165-170) obviously speaking of her dead father who was buried without a proper burial. I doubt Ophelia got to say goodbye to someone who controlled her own thoughts as well as her lover Hamlet. Hamlet's constant switch of him saying he loves her to him now saying he curses her while subtly yet not so subtly calling her a whore for her behavior. Her mind has crumbled until she can barely speak in a coherent thought that makes sense, even to Laertes(who wants to avenge her for insanity) This makes sense when you realize that Polonius never gave his daughter a reason to think for herself since back then everything was controlled by the parents of said child. I believe that at one point Ophelia's love for Hamlet wasn't clouded by the direction of her father yet now, along with Hamlet's decline into "insanity". I say this because one day Hamlet is in love with her, and the next day he wants absolutley nothing to do with her. Love can drive a person crazy,and thats what happened here. Ophelia knows that her father does not approve of Hamlet, so maybe another reasoning for her going crazy is that she thinks Hamlet killed Polonious because of how hes not accepting of them being together, and Hamlet reacted by killing him. Although some people can say Hamlet is the reasoning for Ophealias insanity, i can also say her father might be at fault too. I think Hamlet and her father played a big role in her insanity, and shes very overwhelmed right now. Even when she was singing in 4.5 pg 249, her lyrics were all about Hamlets betrayl . At one point Laertes even says "ophelia has sent off her insanity to her dead father." I believe Polonius because he never truly let her be her, he didn’t allow her to live for her and make her own decisions. When a person with so
much control over your life dies, and you don’t get the proper closure they need if affects them. Polonius always treated her as a child, as if she wasn’t at the age where things were changing and she desperately needed respect from him. Polonius says “Then I'll tell you. Believe that you are a foolish little baby for believing these "offers" are something real. Offer yourself more respect, or--not to beat this word to death--you'll offer me the chance to be a laughing-stock.” (1.3.105-109) As a father, he was never there for her for real. He was constantly degrading her and bringing her down when she tired to constantly please him. She wanted to feel loved, and have a genuine relationship with her father, but he just wanted to control her. When it came to Hamlet, Polonius never let her have feeling and/or a relationship with him because of how he felt. She never really got the chance to be honest with him, and genuinely connect, and before she got the opportunity he was killed. I say Hamlet for the reason being that he has multiple times, kind of showed Ophelia he was leading her on and using her. Based off the past couple scenes Hamlet once wrote her letter, gave her gifts, and then told her "I didn't love you". Why would he do all those things and then say he never loved her. If I was her I would of been messed up from those words because he made I seem otherwise. Then again she also says something about virginity in both the book and the play with leads us to knowing that it was more that gifts, which could lead her to being attached and hurt extremely more.
