I believe that this book is going to be about a dystopian society controlled by the government. I think these people will be brainwashed. I think that the main character and some of his friends are going to attempt to escape their town. I don't think all of them will make it out because the author would want to pull a plot twist and kill off one of the main people.

QUESTIONS:
-What happens after being "released?"
When you are released you are killed.
-What is the "ceremony of 12?"
It is like a birthday but for all of the people who were born that year. At this time you are given your chosen assignment for life (jobs).
-Why do they have to share their feeling?
Because it is a rule.

EVENTS/THOUGHTS:
After reading the first chapter of this book, I am reminded of the movie "The Divergent" in this movie lives are strictly controlled by the government. At a certain age, they are tested to see their abilities and what group they would thrive in.

In the first chapter, we are introduced to Jonas who is a young boy, then he later meets up with his mom, dad, and younger sister Lily.
An aircraft has flown over the community which Jonas finds odd because there are no aircraft allowed to fly over the city. The only air crafts are the ones delivering cargo and other supplies. but even then it is far from eyesight from inside the community. Soon after he hears 2 loud explosions and then on the speakers is a man who tells everyone to find shelter and go inside (his sister lily was at an after-school program and his parents were at work, the father is a Nurturer who is responsible for all the physical and emotional needs of every new-child during its earliest life. and the mother holds a prominent position at the Department of Justice). Shortly after the speaker man comes back and says that the man flying the aircraft had made a mistake with directions and that he would be realized, Jonas made a note of how this man said " he would be released." the man had said it in as if he had been grinning sarcastically to himself of someone else. we don't know what "be released" means yet but it is a saying that is frowned upon in this community. after returning home, he and his family sit down for the ritual of sharing the feelings they felt today. This was a rule implied by the government. Lily was feeling angry because of a kid from a visiting community, the father was feeling worried because of a kid who wasn't doing well, and the mother was feeling frustrated and guilty because of someone who had broken the rules and was on his third strike about to get "released". finally, it was jones tern, he expressed a feeling of apprehensiveness, he was excited and yet nervous about the big celebration in December. The ceremony of 12. After Jonas said this, his parents told lily to go to the other room while they have a privet chat with Jonas. The chapter ended there.

QUESTIONS:
-Why would being a birth mother be the most frowned-upon role?
Because it has the least honor.
-Why are Jonas and the newborn baby the only people with "light eyes"?
All of the receivers of memory have pale eyes, so Gabe might be the next receiver after Jonas.
-Why do the community's people have to eat their snacks right away and not bring them home for later?
because it is a rule that the community put into place.
-How do the announcers know what is happening at all times?
Camaras.
-Are there cameras everywhere including the houses?
Yes most likely.

EVENTS/THOUGHTS:
After reading this chapter, I feel like The people of the community might have been put someplace like in stimulation or a new world, or they could've been brain whipped and put into a fake reality like the movie "the maze runner."

In the third chapter, the family of four takes home the new child, and right away lily and Jonas notice his eyes, lily makes a joke saying "maybe he has the same birth mother as you." Jonas describes Gabes' eyes as depth, like looking into a clear river all the way down to the bottom. We learn that lily wats an assignment that has to do with children. At first, she says she wants to be a birthmother but her mother shoots that idea down very quickly saying that the role has very little honor and that you birth three babies in 3 years and then you are put to work. The mother says this makes lily not want to be a birth mother anymore. The father steps in and suggests that she could be a nurturer. Lily likes that idea. Jonas thinks that lily could be good as a speaker or something that talks a lot because lily loves to talk. Jonas then spoke about how he took an apple home and then later on the announcements were directed at him without saying his name. He has to make a mandatory apology to the recreation director right before he went to school. One time Jonas and his friend Asher were playing catch with an apple. Jonas was looking at the apple when he realized it has changed for a split second in mid-air. They kept playing catch and Jonas kept noticing that the apple was changing in mid-air. When Jonas examed the apple closely by himself nothing ever happened so he let it be. The only thing that happened was the announcement later directing it at Jonas without saying his name. The father was explaining the feeding procedure to lily and the evening went on as normal in all the family's lives. And the chapter ended there.

QUESTIONS:
-Why is bragging not allowed?
So there is a life without conflict.
-Why can't kids come into the release room?
Because you are killed when you are released.
-Why doesn't anybody know where they go when being released?
Because they can't ask questions.
-What happens if someone dies?
they chant their name and forget about them.

EVENTS/THOUGHTS:
I feel this was a shorter chapter. This community has specific rules that I think are unnecessary. like the no bragging rule, even if you don't do it on purpose you still have to apologize to the receiver. I also feel like being "released" is an unnecessary rule.

The fourth chapter begins with Jonas talking about how he usually doesn't do his volunteer work with his friend Asher because it's hard to stay on track and get things done. But he says with the ceremony of twelve so soon and getting to stop his volunteer work, he goes to volunteer at the house of the old with Asher and another 11 named Fiona. Jonas likes Fiona because she is smart and quiet but she is also funny and has a sense of fun. Jonas then talks about an eleven who didn't make the required volunteer hours so he could celebrate at the ceremony of twelve, he had a month to make up the hours and received his role in private.
The house of the old had celebrated a release earlier that morning. His name was Roberto. Jonas learned this because of the elder he was betting. Her name was Larissa. Jonas knew Roberto, he helped with his feeding the last time he was there at the old people's home. They were then talking about Edna who was released a few days prior. She was a birth mother. Larissa said she didn't believe that Edna was very smart. At the celebration of life/ the release, they begin with the telling of his life. then the toast, they chant the anthem, then after that the good-bye speech. Larissa had said that Roberto was very happy before he got released and walked out with a content look. Then Joanas asks Larissa " what happens at the actual release? Where exactly did Roberto go?" Larissa responded, " I don't know, I don't think anybody knows except for the committee, He just bowed to all of us and then walked, like they all do, through the special door in the Releasing Room. But you should have seen his look. Pure happiness, I’d call it."
Chapter four ended there.

QUESTIONS:
-What are the stirrings?
Where you feel feelings.
-Why do they have to get rid of the stirrings?
They have to take a pill once they get stirrings because this pill gets rid of emotion.

EVENTS/THOUGHTS:
After reading this chapter, I am beginning to think that the people of the community are being controlled and the people in charge are making things happen to everybody at the same time so that they will think that it's normal.

In the fifth chapter, the family sits before school to share their dreams, it is mandatory just like the sharing of their feelings. The family goes one by one and once it's jones's turn he said, he dreamt he was in the bathing house of the old, but it was different. Instead of multiple baths lined up, there was only one. And he had taken off my tunic but hadn’t put on the smock, so his chest was bare. And Fiona was there too. Jonas, Fiona, and Asher were volunteering at the house of the old together. But in his dream, Asher was not there, just him and Fiona. Fiona was laughing. But Jonas wasn’t. He was a little angry at her, in the dream, because Fiona wasn’t taking him seriously. Jonas felt embarrassed to share the rest of his dream but he knew he would be breaking the rule if he didn't so he continued. Jonas thinks he was trying to get Fiona into the tub of water, he wanted to bathe her. She kept laughing and saying no, and that was the rest of his dream. Lily and the father left to go to school while Jonas had to stay back and speak to his mother. Jonas's mother sat down beside him and explained that what he was feeling was his first stirrings. Jonas always heard the announcement on the speaker " ATTENTION.
THIS A REMINDER THAT STIRRINGS MUST BE REPORTED IN ORDER FOR TREATMENT TO TAKE PLACE. Jonas always ignored that announcement because he didn’t understand it and it had never seemed to apply to him in any way." Emedialty Jonas starts asking questions about the treatment that the speaker always talks about. He gets nervous because of the ceremony of twelve coming up and does not know how long or bad that treatment will be. His mother explains that it is just a simple little pill he has to take every day so that the stirrings will not come back. Jonas remembers when he and Asher were leaving for school Asher's dad yelled out, " Asher you forgot to talk your pill." Jonas never asked anything about it because he thought it might fall into the catagorie of making people uncomfortable. His mother thanked him for sharing his dream and he was off to school. Jonas felt proud that he had joined the group of people who need to take this medication for their stirrings. as Jonas was pedaling down the path he kept slowly forgetting his dream. Chapter 5 ended there.

QUESTIONS:
-Why do the kids have to have a certain hairstyle/cut at a certain age?
As a sign of maturity.
-Why do they need to volunteer at such a young age?
To get all their volunteer hours in to become a 12.
- Do they keep the same bike for the rest of their lives?
No, they do not.

EVENTS/THOUGHTS:
After reading this chapter I feel like the people of the community are happy with the controlled environment that they live in. If I lived in this type of place I would probably try to escape to another community.

The chapter starts with lily and her mother arguing over her braids. Lily wants to do her own but they always fall out by mid-day so the mother is going to do them. Lily and Jonas start talking about his assignment and that he should become a pilot to fly lily around. Jonas playfully threatens to though lily out of a plane when his mother interrupts before this can develop into a fight. When they arrive at the auditorium Jonas and lily sit with their groups. The father has not joined them yet because he is up with all of the nurturers. He pled on behalf of Gabe that he stay with the nurturers an extra year so that he can become the required weight for his age group. If the father did not do this Gabe would have been released. As the different groups are being called up Jonas and Lily begin to grow more impatient and more excited. As the new babies are being named we learn the stories of Caleb. I think this is a very sad story. One day the four-year-old slipped off without everyone noticing and fell into the river. He died. The parents of Caleb have received a replacement baby whose name is also Caleb. As the baby was being handed to the parents the people did a chant whispering Caleb. it got louder and louder and time passed. A new child was also named Roberto like the one who was released a few weeks prior. However, this baby didn't get his name chanted because being released and being dead are two different things says, Jonas. Jonas sat patiently threw the ceremonies of 2, 3, and 4. Then came the mid-day meal. And then after that, he sat patiently threw ceremonies 5, 6, 7, and the last ceremony of the day, 8. Then it was the morning of the ceremony of 12. After all of the 9s were sat back down from getting their bikes it was the 10ns turn. The girls got their braids chopped off and the boys got short hair cut to make them look more like a man. Then it was the turn of the 11ns, bye this point all of the 11s just wanted the year to be over so they could become 12. However, they received new clothing undergarments, and a small calculator they would need for their year in school. Another break for mid-day means and by this point, Jonas must have been so exited and nervous. the crowd began to make their way through the doors to sit back down for the last celebration of the day. Chapter 6 ended there.

QUESTIONS:
- Why was Jonas skipped?
Because he was assigned receiver of memory and they announce that last.
-Does it have something to do with the apple?
Yes, what he saw with the apple is what they call "seeing beyond." he saw beyond again when he was being assigned his role.
-Why are they being watched?
-What will happen to Jonas now?
He starts his training and becomes the receiver.
-Will Jonas be released?
No, Jonas will not be released in fact with the job he got, (receiver of memory) he is not allowed to even apply to be released.

EVENTS/THOUGHTS:
After reading this chapter I am very confused. I am confused about why Jonas was skipped. I am confused because of something that the chief elder said to Asher. "Thank you for your childhood." Her saying this makes me think maybe the people of the community have been put in a similar situation as the movie Maze runner. Where boys are put in a built world to try and figure out how to solve a virus and figure out how to escape. Maybe it's similar to this in the way how people handle being in a controlled environment. Maybe Jonas was skipped because he is different or because of what he saw with the apple. maybe they think he knows something he shouldn't.

This chapter begins with the first of the 11s soon to be 12s getting called up to the stage one by one. They are placed in order of the numbers they were given at birth. Jonas is 19, Asher is 4 and Fiona is 18. Asher got the role of Assistant Director of Recreation. The assignments of a birthmother, a doctor, and an engineer are given. Jonases turn is coming closer and closer. pretty soon its final turn (Number 18). She is assigned the role of a caretaker at the house of the old. she seemed pretty happy with her given role. Next up was Jonas. He takes a deep breath to prepare for what's about to come. The chief elder opens her mouth to speak and she says "Number 20." Jonas is shocked as are many others. Including myself when I read this part of the chapter. The crowd goes silent and Jonas hunches down to try and make himself seem small. As the chief elder kept getting closer and closer to the end Jonas kept thinking she would finally realize he was skipped and that she would realize she has made a mistake. But then he thought about this further. Did the chief elder make a mistake? Definitely not the case. Especially at the ceremony of twelve. He wonders if he did something wrong or if he was in big trouble. He didn't turn to see his parents because he couldn't bare see their faces full of shame and imbuement. The group leader looked worried as well. Jonas just wanted to disappear, vanish in his seat. Chapter Seven ended there.

QUESTIONS:

-Who is the receiver? Is he the one in charge of the community?
The receiver is a man who is the most important person in the committee.

-Why do they get things taken away and given to them at a certain age?
Because the committee wants the kids to become more mature.

EVENTS/THOUGHTS:

After reading this chapter, I am starting to get a deeper understanding of how controlled the environment is in this community.

In the second chapter, we learn that the ceremony of twelve is a birthday, it is one of the biggest celebrations because after twelve you don't count your age anymore. After you turn twelve, your life will change a lot. You will no longer be with the age group you were with for your whole life, you will be with the same people that were chosen the same career path. Everyone's birthday is in December. The parents don't get to choose their baby's name unlike here in Canada, the babies are given to them in December at around one year old and are named by the nurturers as they are handed to their new family. We learn that Jones's father (a nurturer) could have secretly broken the rules and looked at the baby's names. In the text, the father says that he feels guilty because he did have a look at the name sheet for the newborns this year to check the name of the baby who was having a hard time. He wanted to know his name to comfort him and to grow a bond with him to help the kid out so that he wouldn't be “released.” The father said the baby's name was Gabriel but he calls him Gabe for short. All of the children receive their bicycles at nine and are not allowed to ride bikes if they are younger, however, most older siblings secretly teach their younger siblings how to ride their bikes. I believe that Jonas feels scared that he will feel disappointed with his given job, and I think he might feel he will be unhappy with his life if he doesn't get something that he wants. If they are unhappy with their selection, they went to an appealing party that went to the community. Jonas and his parents talked about how life will be different after the ceremony of twelve and then lily came in ready for bed wanting her “comfort animal”, the mother thinks that lily should start sleeping without her stuffed elephant because once she turns nine it will be talent away and recycled to the newborns. However, Jonas and Lily's father were already reaching for the stuffy, and lily was off to the “sleeping room”. Chapter two ended there.

QUESTIONS:
- Why was Jonas the one chosen for the receiver of memory?
Because he had all of the qualities.
- why did people have to chant his name?
To accept him as a receiver.
- What happened to the last receiver?
She could not handle the memories and applied for release.
- Why was she such a bad receiver?
Because she applied for release after receiving sad memories.
- Where did she go?
She was released.

EVENTS/THOUGHTS:
After reading this chapter, I am left with a deeper understanding of just how robotic and inhumane this community is. I say inhuman because they are brainwashed into taking pills that cause them to not have feelings. Now that we know that Jonas can see beyond, I wonder if he will be able to see outside the community or if he ever will go outside the community.

After everyone but Jonas had received their assignments, the chief elder was quick to apologize to the community "I have caused you anxiety," she said. "I apologize to my community." - The chief elder. The whole crowd responds with " We accept your apology." when I read this part of the text I was shocked at how robotic and cult-like this sounded. The chief elder then goes on and singles out Jonas as if she hasn't caused him enough embarrassment and shame for a lifetime. She apologized and he answers back "I accept your apology." with a shakey voice. He is called to the stage. The chief elder places her hand across his shoulder and starts speaking to the crowd. She said that" Jonas has not been assigned". Jones's heart stopped but then she continued. "He has been selected." The whole auditorium was puzzled. The chief elder then continues ''Jonas has been selected to be our next Receiver of Memory." All of the viewers gasped in shock. the selection of Receiver of Memory is very very rare. The community has had their Receiver of Memory for a long time, jonas watched as the chief elder singles out a man sitting with the elders. He is sitting with them but doesn't seem to fit in. In their last selection, they failed. The chief elder did not dwell on this subject very long because it made many people uncomfortable, you could see it in their eyes. She continues to speak and says they have been cautious with this selection. Sometimes, the committee is not entirely certain about their selection. But they have no doubts or dreams telling them that Jonas is not the right fit for this important role. The training to become the receiver of memory Is very hard and painful as the chief elder had described. The chief elder said that she can't describe the pain because she has never and will never experience it. Even the current receiver of memory can't describe such pain. Jonas listens to the chief elder becoming more frightened as she continues. He will be Alone, Isolated, and Apart. Jonas was represented as a possible receiver very early on. Jonas was chosen to be the receiver of memory because the elders who have been watching him have noticed that he is intelligent. Jonas is a top student and has been all his life. He has integrity. he has made small mistakes as has everybody else in the community. He has courage. Only one person has experienced the painful training that all receiver of memory has to overcome. The committee believes that Jonas has the courage to overcome the training. next is wisdom. Jonas does not yet have this, it will come with his training. And the last thing is the ability to see beyond. I believe seeing beyond has something to do with the apple and what Jonas saw when he was looking out at the crowd. Once Jonas saw beyond while looking at the crowd he knew that he was the right fit and he accepted the role of receiver of memory. The people did the ritual of murmuring his name. it started off quiet almost like a whisper, but then it grew louder and faster. and the chapter ended there.

QUESTIONS:
-Was Asher jealous?
No, Asher can not feel jealousy because of the pills.
-Was Asher acting different or was Jonas acting different?
None of them were acting differently.
-who else can lie?
The giver.
-why is training to become the receiver of memory described as so painful?
Because Jonas will receive painful memories like war.

EVENTS/THOUGHTS:
I feel like in this chapter we get to see more of Jonas and how he feels. we also get to see that the pills that everyone has to take are getting rid of their feelings of love, lust, and any other feelings other than happiness. I think that that is just very messed up and if someone figures this out, I think they might try to escape. I feel like the receiver of memory should not be alone and be distant from his friends. Jonas has to go to school, then come home and go straight to training. I think that the social aspect of being an important part of the community is important and not being able to speak to his friends is not a great idea. I think he might get sad or depressed and maybe that's what the chief elder meant by the pain she cannot explain because they all have no feeling except for the other receiver of memory.

The ninth chapter starts with everyone leaving the auditorium. People are treating Jonas almost like royalty. They would move aside for him and look at him. All Jonas wanted was to find his family unit and also Asher. Jonas finds Asher. "Ash!" he called, spotting his friend near the rows of bicycles. "Ride back with me?" "Sure." Asher smiled, his usual smile, friendly and familiar. But Jonas felt a moment of hesitation from his friend, an uncertainty "Congratulations," Asher said. "You too," Jonas replied. "It was really funny, when she told about the smacks. You got more applause than almost anybody else.'' This is just a part of the conversation they had after the ceremony. While reading this, you can kind of see that asher and Jonas seem different. It's almost a sense of awkwardness. Tonight, all of the new twelve will be studying their new assignment rules. The groupmates would congratulate each other on their new assignments. Jonas and asher split up to go to their family units. Lily starts talking about her plan for her volunteer hours when she accidentally says Gabriel's name. this is bad because the father broke the rules and looked up his name. Jonases mother and father say they are very proud and that Jonas has been greatly honored. his father added that it's the most important role in the community. the parents then explained the difference between important jobs and roles. Jonas couldn't help but ask about the previous receiver who failed. We learned that the failed receiver was a female and that they were not to speak her name and that no new child should have her name. it was a forbidden name. Jonas thinks to himself wondering what she did to get her name forbidden. in the community, having your name forbidden is the highest degree of disgrace. Nobody knows what happened to her. Jonas's mother interrupts before any more questions can be asked. "You've been greatly honored, Jonas. Greatly honored,'' said Jonas's mother. when Jonas was alone in his room, he began to look at the rules assigned for the receiver of memory. The rules

"1. Go immediately at the end of school hours each day to the Annex entrance behind the House of the Old and present yourself to the attendant.
2. Go immediately to your dwelling at the conclusion of Training Hours each day.
3. From this moment you are exempted from rules governing rudeness. You may ask any question of
any citizen and you will receive answers.
4. Do not discuss your training with any other member of the community, including parents and
Elders.
5. From this moment you are prohibited from dream-telling.
6. Except for illness or injury unrelated to your training, do not apply for any medication.
7. You are not permitted to apply for release.
8. You may lie."

Jonas began to think to himself about the rules and how he didn't have to be rude but he only had the option. Jonas was stunned by the last rule. it has been taught since the earliest of language never to lie. When he was four he got whipped because he said he was "starving". that was a lie because no one in the community was starving, sure hungry but never starving. He has never wanted to lie, Asher doesn't, lily doesn't, and neither do his parents. But, Jonas had a thought he never had before. If he could lie, then who else can lie? had other people received this sentence? he could ask the rudest question to his father "do you lie?" but he would never know if the answer was true. Chapter nine ended there.

They haven't seen snow, and they probably haven't seen rain. Jonas didn't even know there was an outside world or history before the people of the community. Jonas doesn't know certain vocabulary either since it's such a gated community.

The tenth chapter begins with Jonas with Fiona. They are both nervous to start their first day of training. Things have changed since a few days ago when they were still eleven. Even the name tags on their bikes. The maintenance crew switched them to a look that gave citizens in training. They said their goodbyes and Jonas walked toward the building where his training would be held. Jonas was about to open the door when he noticed a buzzer so he clicked it instead. A nice lady answered the door and when Jonas said his name he was let in straight away. The woman pushed a button unlocking a door. Jonas was shocked because none of the doors in the community were ever locked. well non that Jonas knew of. The kind woman ensured him the locked doors were just for the privacy of the receiver, for when he needs to concentrate. Jonas hurried to the living space and was amazed by all of the books, there were not a lot of books in the community. Just the book of rules, a dictionary, and a community volume contained descriptions of every office, factory, building, and committee. Jonas has never seen so many books in his life. Jonas hadn't looked for long because he felt the presence of a man with light eyes in the room. The old receiver of memory. It was the elder who stood out with the rest while at the ceremony of 12. Jonas tried his best to have the proper grammar and to be his best self. They started talking about age. Jonas pointed out that he looked old, which in our world would be disrespectful. The receiver then said he Is not as old as he looks and that this job aged him. The receiver was kind and made conversation with Jonas about things they can relate to like the fear they both felt at their ceremonies of 12. The current receiver then tells Jonas to ask any questions, anything at all. Jonas had thousands of questions, but he chose to not ask one. Then the receiver begins to explain his job. "my job is to transmit to you all the memories I have within me." the current receiver said. Jonas did not quite understand. he thought that he would just be told life stories and important events that happened in this old man's life. The receiver quickly states that it's not his past memory that he must transmit but the memories of the world. Before him and Jonas and before the receivers generations back. Jonas did not understand. He did not know there was life outside of his community. The receiver receives the memories from back and back and all that goes beyond. The man described the job as going downhill on a sled in the snow. At first, it's fun and you're going so fast, but then the snow starts building up and you get slower and slower and you have to push hard just to keep moving. Jonas did not understand. He did not know what these words meant. Snow, sled, downhill. they meant nothing to him. The man then tells Jonas to take off his tunic and lie face down on the bed. The receiver said he would transmit the memory of snow to Jonas. The man places his hand on joneses back and the chapter ended there.

Jonas has never seen the sun, or he has but hasn't known the name, and he has never seen snow.

The eleventh chapter, starts off with Jonas, feeling cold. He started to breathe in the cold air and he felt energized. He took another breath and felt the air all threw his body. He could no longer feel the man's hands but something else. It was the snow. One part of him realized he was still in the apex room but another separate part of him was sitting upright. His hands were holding onto a tough damp rope. He could see even though his eyes were shut. He could see the white twirling flakes around him. The snow. The object he sat on was the sled just like how the old man described it. He was looking out on the hill. The sled began to move and he then realized he was going downhill. He cut through the snow and was on the sled going downhill on snow and was being propelled by what he was certain the runners were. When the piled-up snow became too much for the runners the sled came to a stop and holding onto the rope Jonas was breathing heavily. When he opened his eyes he was back on the bed with the old man next to him. "How do you feel?" the old man asked. Jonas responded with the feeling of being surprised. Jonas finally asked a question when the old man said something about transmitting that memory to him. We learned that once the memory is transmitted it is no longer in the transmitter's memory. Jonas began to ask more questions and from them, we learned that at one point the community did have snow hills and sleds, not when the giver or Jonas's parents were a child but before that. They were stopped and removed by climate control because the unpredictable weather made transportation impossible at times and the snow made it hard to grow food. The hills made it hard for busses and trucks to go up, it slowed them down. Jonas made the suggestion to bring those things back because of all of the power that the receiver has, but we learn the receiver has little to no power but the most honor. Jonas laid back down to experience more climate. This time he went into the place faster and he felt warm this time not cold. He didn't move, posture was the same. he was giving the word sunshine. he learned it came from the sky just like the snow. He said the word aloud and opened his eyes. The old man was pleased because the word came to Jonas with no explanation. That made his job easier. There was also sunshine in the community before the "sameness" the old man said. And before "climate control" Jonas added. Jonas asked more questions. Through them, we learn that there will be pain involved just like the chief elder had said. The giver had enough energy for one more. Jonas closed his eyes. He felt warm again. Very warm. In the real world, he knew it was only a few minutes but he also knew it had been a few hours in the sunshine. His mouth hurt to speak but he cried out "ouch" still. the pain was so bad the word could not come to him. He opened his eyes. the old man explained that it was a sunburn. The training day was over and they said their goodbyes. Jonas had one last question. If Jonas was the receiver what should he call the old man? the old man responded, "call me the giver." the chapter ended there.

I look forward to Christmas every year. Not only is receiving gifts great, but I love giving gifts and watching people's faces light up. I also love the family aspect of Christmas. The war memory in chapter 15 also made me think about the wars in the 3rd world countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran. It's sad but the truth is that there are young men fighting every day and there are young men dying.

CHAPTER 15:
When Jonas entered the annex room, he immediately realized that this is the day that he would be sent away. Jonas headed to the door when the realization hit. He could help the giver and take away some of his pain. He gave this crazy idea to the giver. The giver answered quickly but indeed he agreed. Jonas lay down and instructed the giver on what to do because of the immense pain he just blacked out. The giver lays his hands on joneses back and transfers the memory that has been causing much pain. Jonas was in a foul-smelling place with yellow and brown smoke hanging low to the ground. It wasn't quiet. In the field, laymen groaned in pure pain. A wide-eyed horse began stumbling over the mounds of men and finally, it fell and did not get back up. Jonas heard a voice beside him. "Water," the voices said in a parched whisper. Jonas looked and it was a boy who couldn't be much older than him. His face was covered in dirt and he had matted blond hair. The boy lay in his grey uniform soaked in his fresh runny blood. The boy asked for water again and this time more blood trickled down his sleeve and chest. One of joneses' arms was immobilized with pain. Jonas used his other arm to reach for the bottle on his belt. It was tin and had a green tinge to it. He poured the water into the boy's mouth. The boy sighed, and he fell back as his lower jaw dropped. blankness slid across his eyes, he went silent. But the others cried for their mothers and pled for water and even death. Jonas could hear the sound of cannons and he lay there for hours. he could hear all the cries of the wounded men. Finally, when Jonas could not take it anymore he opened his eyes. the giver looked at him and said, "forgive me." and chapter 15 ended there.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN:
The Giver is gentle with Jonas for days following the war memory. He gives Jonas wonderful memories of birthday parties, paintings in museums, horseback riding, and camping trips. None of these things exist in the community. When Jonas asks The Giver to describe his favorite memory, The Giver tells Jonas he wants to give it to him, not just describe it to him. The Giver transmits the memory of a group of people, very young and very old, opening presents under a tree covered in lights. He tells Jonas the memory is of family and love. Jonas asks who the two old people were, and The Giver tells him they are called grandparents. Jonas has never heard of Grandparents. In the community, parents aren't a part of their children's lives once their children become full adults. They go to the House of Childless Adults, and then the House of the Old, and they are released without their children even knowing. Jonas wishes aloud that his own family could be more like the family in the memory and that The Giver was his grandfather. At home that evening, Jonas asks his parents if they love him. They laugh at the question and scold him for using a word with such freedom. They tell him that they take pride in his accomplishments and enjoy having him around, but they cannot say they love him. That night, Jonas gives Gabriel another happy memory to help him sleep and tells Gabe that he wishes he could change the community to make it have colors, grandparents, and love. The next morning, Jonas decides to stop taking his pill for the Stirrings.

There are different forms of PTSD and Jonas went all short of breath. my stepdad actually has PTSD because he went to Afghanistan. he has been shot at and his friends have been killed in suicide bombs. as I said there are different kinds of PTSD and some people might have it worse than others.

Four weeks later, the community loudspeakers announced an unscheduled holiday. Jonas does not have to go to school. Now that he has stopped taking the pills, his Stirrings have returned. He feels a little embarrassed about the dreams he is having at night but also is not going to start taking the pills again. He understands that his dreams and the memories that he has gotten from The Giver have given him a new look at feelings, and he gets annoyed when people use expressions like sadness and anger because he knows that only he has actually felt genuine emotions. Jonas rides his bike along the river and he knows that the river might lead somewhere. Returning from the river, Jonas sees Asher and his friends playing a game of war. He tries to explain to Asher that the game is a cruel mockery of the terrible realities of war. Asher doesn't understand him and responds that he has to play these games because of his job in recreation. Jonas realizes it is useless to try to explain all that he has experienced. Fiona arrives and tries to comfort Jonas, but eventually leaves on her bicycle. Jonas sadly realizes that he loves Asher and Fiona, but that they can never love him back.

QUESTIONS:
- What is going to happen to Gabe now that he has received the memory?
He will remember it when he is older.
-will Gabe remember this memory for the rest of his life?
if he does not leave the community, yes.
- if somebody finds out what Jonas did, will he get released?
yes, it is most likely.

The Giver gives Jonas a memory of falling from the sled, breaking his leg, and scraping his face on the ice. In agony, Jonas begs for medicine to relieve the pain. The Giver refuses, and Jonas remembers the rule in his boom of rules for the job. Later when Jonas goes home, his leg was still hurting. He felt lonely because he knew no one else would be able to understand the pain he has gone through. He remembers and understands why the chief elder said he would need courage. After many more days, The Giver continues to transmit painful memories to Jonas. he asks The Giver why they have to keep all of those painful memories. The Giver tells him that such pain gives them wisdom. For example, when the Committee of Elders wanted to increase the rate of births to have more Laborers, The Giver was able to warn them against it, because he had a memory of terrible hunger. And when the strange plane flew over the community, The Giver told them not to shoot it down because he knew it wasn't a danger. The Giver tells Jonas that people do not want memories of pain. The Receiver's job is important and honored because he can carry the memories for them. When Jonas says he wants to change things, The Giver says that it has been this way for many generations. At Jones's home, Gabrial is growing but still not great at night. His father is worried that Gabe will have to be released. Jones's father has to release a twin because, in the community, they do not allow identical twins. The lighter twin will be released because the other has a better chance of survival. Jonas wonders where people who are released go. He hopes that release means that the little twin will be sent Elsewhere where he will meet Larissa, the old woman Jonas had bathed and who had recently been released. He has a vision of Larissa welcoming the twin into open arms. But secretly, even from himself, he senses that this is a false hope. Jonas, hoping he can help Gabriel not get released, asks his father if Gabe can sleep in his room that night. His father agrees. When Gabriel is restless, Jonas puts his hands on him. As he does, he thinks about a memory of a beautiful day spent sailing that The Giver transmitted to him, and realizes that he is transmitting the memory to Gabriel. He stops, but when Gabriel starts to fret again he transmits the full memory. Gabriel is calm and is able to sleep. Jonas thinks about what he has done and what would happen to him if somebody found out. so he decided to keep it to himself and not tell the giver.

QUESTIONS:
-Will Jonas make it out of the community?
Yes, he will.
-What will happen to Jonas if he gets caught?
He will be released.

EVENTS/THOUGHTS
After reading this chapter I really feel bad for Jonas. He is now fully realizing that his community is controlling and dangerous.

Jonas becomes frantic after witnessing the releases performed by his father. The Giver allows him to spend the night at the Annex, and Jonas continues to try to grasp what he saw during the release: his Father is a killer. Old people and newborns are killed when the rules say they should be. Even his friend Fiona is being trained "in the fine art of release." The Giver tries to help him understand that his Father and Fiona are not evil. "They know nothing," he tells Jonas because they feel no feelings. The Giver says Jonas has helped him realize that the community does not need to be this way. The two of them make a plan that will lead to putting things right again. The plan is for Jonas to escape the community, which will end in a year's worth of his memories being released. Jonas feels the plan can work, but if it works it means he can never return to his home, and if it didn't work they will probably kill him. He thinks though, if he stays, his life is "no longer worth living." Jonas wants the giver to escape with him, but the giver says he needs to stay behind to help the people deal with the memories. As Jonas gets ready to return to his family, he asks The Giver how he first knew that he was different. The giver smiles and tells him that his own awareness began with the "hearing beyond" of something called music. When Jonas is home, he and his father continue to lie to each other and smile. Jonas runs through the plan in his head. In the middle of the night, before the December Ceremony, Jonas will leave a note for his parents telling them he's gone on an early morning ride along the riverbank. He will leave his dwelling, hide his bicycle and a folded stack of clothing along the river, and head to the Annex. There, The Giver will have arranged for a vehicle, saying he would be visiting the Elders in another community. Instead, he will take Jonas outside the community to begin his journey to Elsewhere. Later, he will announce that Jonas has been lost in the river and begin to help the community deal with the released memories. Jonas tries once more to convince The Giver to come with him, but the old man tells him that when his work with the community is finished, he only wants to go be with his daughter: Rosemary.

QUESTIONS:
-Will Jonas and Gabe make it safely to elsewhere?
He makes it to the village, yes.
-Are the search planes going to find him?
No, they will not.

EVENTS/THOUGHTS:
I'm worried that Jonas will not make it or get caught. i think that after what happened with the last receiver (Rosemary), they will not hesitate to release Jonas and find someone even better.

After working out his exact plan with The Giver to escape, Jonas returns to his dwelling. As usual, he listens to Lily's chitchat and his parents' comments (and "lies," Jonas thinks). But then Father looks at Gabriel, playing on the floor, and mentions that the little boy will not be staying with them anymore. He explains that when Jonas spent the night at the Annex, he had sent Gabriel to the Nurturing Center to see how he did on his own. Without Jonas near him, the new child cried all night. The Nurturers all agreed that this was unacceptable behavior for a child Gabriel's age. Father had been among those to decide that, as a result, Gabriel would be released the next morning. In his sweet, sing-song voice, he says it will be "bye-bye to you, Gabriel." Mother and Lily agree it's probably for the best, and that they've done all they could. Jonas knows that to save Gabriel, he must leave that night instead of in two weeks. As soon as it is dark, Jonas steals some food and his father's bicycle, which has a child seat on the back. He puts Gabriel into a sound sleep through memory, and bikes away from the community. He hopes The Giver will understand. Over the next few days, Jonas makes his way through nearby communities and learns to avoid the search planes that come after him. He also uses memories of cold to cool down his and Gabriel's body temperatures so that heat-seeking technology cannot find them. During their quiet times, Gabriel giggles as he plays with grass and twigs. Jonas keeps giving the new child his dreams but notices they are becoming weaker and more surfaced. This is what he had hoped for that as he moved further from the community, he would shed memories and they would return to the people who need them.

QUESTIONS:
-Will Jonas and Gabe starve to death?
No, Not yet.
- What happens if Jonas can not take care of Gabriel only himself?
Gabrial will die.

EVENTS/THOUGHTS:
I am worried about Gabriel, and that he won't survive all the harsh weather. In all of the photos I see of him online, he is so cute and I will be really sad if the innocent, weak baby dies.

As Jonas and Gabriel continue on their journey, travel becomes increasingly tricky. Roads become poorly kept, and then disappear. Jonas hurt injured his ankle by falling, and using the bike becomes more difficult. Jonas becomes increasingly aware that Gabriel's safety depends entirely on his own continued strength. Despite the dangers, though, Jonas finds moments of outstanding happiness. He comes upon his first waterfall, and live animals he recognizes from memories. He hears birdsong for the first time. After a life of Sameness, he is "awed by the surprises that lay beyond each curve of the road." The dangers, however, become more and more real. Now that they are far away from developed fields, food is low, and Jonas realizes that he is experiencing the feeling of starving. He tells himself that if he had stayed in the community, he would not be hungry. After wanting a choice for so long, he worries that he has made the wrong one. But then he stops that train of thought. He knows that if he had stayed, he would have starved for feelings, for color, for love. And Gabriel would be dead. His choice had been the right one. The weather changes and Jonas and Gabriel are caught in two days of rain. While rain had been enjoyable in memories, this rain is different, harsher. Gabriel and Jonas are cold and wet, and Gabriel begins to cry. Jonas realizes it's because the little boy is hungry and terribly weak, and Jonas begins to sob. He is not afraid of himself. He only fears he will not be able to save Gabriel.

QUESTIONS:
- Do Jonas and Gabe die?
-Will they be welcomed by the village?

EVENTS/THOUGHTS:
The end of the book has made me look back and realize that the whole storyline is crazy but also entertaining. I hope that Jonas and Gabe make it into the village and are welcomed with warm loving arms. I hope they are greeted with the love they have missed out on their whole lives.

Jonas and Gabriel are starving, and now things are getting worse. A snowstorm has started. But Jonas feels that Elsewhere is close. Jonas can't see or hear anything, but he feels certain that he is close to his destination. Up to this point, Elsewhere has been a place of the unknown. For all Jonas knows, it may as well be, as Lily imagines, a world of twins. He and Gabe will die of starvation and exposure soon. The snow is mounting, and ahead of them, Jonas sees a hill. Jonas’s feet and legs are numb and tired from the work of their travels. Jonas continues to push on the pedals, but the bicycle eventually stalls and then falls over. Jonas forces himself up and begins to climb. He has now traveled so far from the community that he can feel the memories leaving. Soon the Giver’s wisdom will be required to help guide the community through the disturbing new memories and experiences he is leaving. However, Jonas still struggles to transmit memories of sunshine to Gabriel, whose hair is matted and whose skin is dirty and marked by tears. With the strength of these memories in his mind, Jonas continues up the hill as he and the baby hug each other for warmth. Jonas depends on his memories to help him continue, but it seems that they have all gone. Suddenly he thinks of the Giver, Asher, and Fiona, and Jonas sees that these thoughts give him a burst of energy that allows him to get to the top of the hill. Once he is there, Jonas suddenly recognizes his surroundings. He looks down and sees a sled, and he knows that this time, there will be no ice and pain waiting for him at the end of the ride. He is surrounded by fresh snow. Jonas finds the rope and rides down the hill. When he gets to the bottom of the hill, he looks up and sees a village. There are lights and buildings. There is warmth. There is joy and singing and music. Jonas thinks he hears music coming across the distance he has traveled, from the community that he left, “but perhaps it was only an echo.”
