Ethical Computing Information Wall by Ammar A Elshikh

The first component of the information wall contains the identification of the Ten Commandments of Computer Ethics and the addition of possible resources (e.g. images, videos, sound) that would aid people in complying with these rules. The next component addresses the following questions: Q1. Which of the Ten Ethical Computing Guidelines do you think students violate most often? Q2. Why do you think these violations occur? Q3. What do you think could be done to reduce or eliminate such unethical behavior?

I believe students violate this commandment due to academic stress. Students have many assignments to complete in their academic careers; sometimes they have an overwhelming amount of assignments to complete or are simply uninterested in the work and just want the assignment completed. Students, then, resort to plagiarism out of fear of failing an assignment or not meeting a specific grade requirement. A lot of material can be plagiarized due to easy access to the Internet. This ease of access allows students to easily obtain high scores on their assignments without the originally required time and effort. An essay that might take two hours can be completed within minutes by copying and pasting the intellectual property of an individual who has previously written about the topic of interest. This allows students to be at ease instead of worrying about whether or not they can complete the assignment on their own and it allows them to receive a grade that will allow them to maintain their academic status.

Plagiarism becomes easier as technology advances, but anti-plagiarism software also becomes more advanced in hopes of encouraging critical thinking. I believe that all assignments, essays, and exams should be checked with an anti-plagiarism tool that also checks for artificial intelligence use. Sites such as Canvas and Blackboard should be able to scan all file types and ensure that students are submitting original work. Students should also be taught the consequences of plagiarism in order to educate them and raise awareness. They should be taught how to cite other sources when necessary and how to effectively paraphrase. Besides affecting the intellectual property of an individual, plagiarism can cause students to earn a grade without developing the skills and intellect the assignment aimed to encourage. Lastly, students should manage their time, and habits such as creating planners should be encouraged so as to discourage plagiarizing due to pressure from procrastination.
