IB Exam Scores of 5, 6 or 7 can be used to meet requirements
 

International Baccalaureate

Filling out the application
 

• You must report grades exactly as they appear on your official academic records (that includes the secondary school transcript and exam report from the International Baccalaureate Organization.)

• If your school releases predicted scores for the diploma exams, you should enter the predicted scores on the IB Exams page of the application.

• If predicted IB scores are not available at the time you submit the application, you do not need to report them on the application, and you do not need to submit them at a later date (unless a campus requests that you do so). UC campuses do not use predicted scores as the only factor for admission.

 
At this time, UC does not accept the digital SAT and there is not a section of the application to report it. When you select the option "Update SAT/ACT" post submission this section is used to report the paper version of the SAT which includes different subject areas. 
 

How do I demonstrate English proficiency?

You can demonstrate proficiency by meeting any of the following exam benchmarks. Keep in mind that you must complete one of these exams by December of your final year of high school/secondary school.
 

• Score 3, 4 or 5 on the AP examination in English Language and Composition, or English Literature and Composition

• Score 6 or 7 on the IB Standard Level examination in English (Language A only)

• Score 5, 6 or 7 on the IB Higher Level examination in English (Language A only)

• Score 6.5 or higher on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)*

• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)* examination:

  • Internet-based test (iBT) or iBT Home Edition: Minimum score of 80 or better

• Duolingo English Test (DET): Minimum score of 115 
   

• Score of 24 or higher on the ACT English Language Arts (ELA)

• Score of 31 or higher on Writing and Language in the SAT

• Earn a grade of C or better in a UC-transferable college course in English composition (worth 3 semester or 4-5 quarter units)

Please be sure to review the information carefully as well as research your major at the campus of your choice as oftentimes they will have additional requirements that you must fulfill.

Our Fall application opens on August 1 for students to begin working on. It can then be submitted between October 1 and December 2. I have included a link below that will take you to our online application.

Thank you for your email! I am pleased to hear that you are interested in studying Computer Science at the University of Chicago. 

1. We ask students to submit three essays with their application. The first of these is the personal statement, which you will write in your Common or Coalition application and send to every school you apply to. The second is our "Why UChicago" essay, in which we ask students to explain why the College at the University of Chicago satisfies their desire for a particular kind of learning, community, and future. The third is our Extended Essay, in which students choose from a bank of existing prompts to answer an intellectual or creative question. You can find a full list of our supplemental essay prompts here. We do not have a minimum or maximum word limit on either of our supplemental essays. Most submissions tend to be around 2 pages, but length is ultimately up to the student's discretion. 

2. We do not have a minimum scoring mark for any of these exams. Please note that we also do not require a DSAT or TOEFL score submission (though you are welcome to send them to us). We practice a holistic application review, which means we do not make decisions based off of any one factor in a student's application, including testing. We instead expect students to demonstrate academic strength and English proficiency through their high school transcript and essays.

We do not require any student to take specific sets of courses in order to be admitted to Princeton as we understand that curricula can vary widely across schools. You can find a listing of our recommendations for academic preparation at https://admission.princeton.edu/how-apply/academic-preparation, though please keep in mind that these are recommendations, not requirements. It is important that students are taking a rigorous course load and succeeding in that schedule so that they will be prepared for the academic rigor of Princeton.

Princeton's admission process involves a holistic review of each applicant's entire file. No particular factor is assigned a fixed weight; rather, the process involves a highly individualized assessment of the applicant's talents, achievements and his or her potential to contribute to learning at Princeton. No single factor is decisive. There are no minimums, cut-offs, or quotas in this holistic review. We look at the transcript and how a student has performed in their academic setting. We look for applicants who have taken advantage of the most rigorous curriculum offered in their setting. We also look for students who are involved outside of the classroom and have shown a commitment to their extracurricular activities. We also pay attention to what an applicant’s teachers tell us and how the applicant portrays him or herself in the essays and short answers. All of these pieces come together to help inform us as we evaluate an application.


At Princeton our admission process is holistic rather than based on a formula. We don’t have minimum GPAs or test scores in order for a candidate to be eligible for admission. That being said, our process is a quite selective, and there is never a guarantee of admission. 

Our goal is to understand how applicants have excelled within their particular schools and communities. We understand that students face a unique set of challenges and opportunities, and we expect to see how they have taken advantage of those specific circumstances. We evaluate each candidate individually and we make decisions based on a holistic review of the application. 

We often tell students that instead of worrying about meeting a specific set of criteria, try to create an application that will help us see your achievements — inside the classroom and out — in their true context, so we can understand your potential to take advantage of the resources at Princeton and the kind of contribution you would make to the Princeton community.


At this time, no decision has been made regarding any potential changes to the Princeton-specific Questions
questions for the upcoming application cycle. We anticipate that the questions will be available on our website by mid-August and will be posted here. 

Thank you for your message and your interest in the University of Pennsylvania. An overview of the requirements to apply can be found on our checklist page for first year applicants.  Penn also requires all external examination results that a student has taken unless due to pandemic reasons they have been delayed or there are other challenges that need to be documented. Scores must be official and submitted through the applicants’ school or the appropriate testing agency. 
 
A strong command of the English language is also necessary for successful study at Penn. Applicants who meet one or both of the criteria below are considered proficient in English: 

1. English is the applicant’s native language. 

2. English has been the applicant’s primary language of instruction for the duration of high school. 

If neither of these statements is true, applicants are required to take the TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test to demonstrate English proficiency. Where the TOEFL iBT is not available due to COVID-19, applicants can take the TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition. Please note that Penn does not currently accept the IELTS Indicator exam or the MyBest score feature from TOEFL. 
 
Penn does not have minimum score requirements.

• MIT First-Year Application Form: Submission of the application requires a $75 fee. If paying the fee presents a hardship for you and your family, you may request a fee waiver in the “Fee Waiver” section of the application.

• Deadlines: For Early Action, we must receive your application with all supporting documents by November 1, 2024. For Regular Action, we must receive your application with all supporting documents by January 6, 2025.

• Recommendations: MIT requires two letters of recommendation from teachers. We recommend one evaluation from a math/science teacher, and one from a humanities, social science, or language teacher. Your school counselor (or equivalent) should submit the Secondary School Report, along with your transcript.

• Standardized tests: We require the SAT or the ACT for both prospective first year and transfer students. Read more about how we came to this decision. SAT/ACT tests must be taken before November 30 for Early Action applicants, and before December 31 for Regular Action applicants, in order for results to be considered.

  • For non-native English speakers, we strongly recommend providing the results of an English proficiency exam if you have been using English for fewer than 5 years or do not speak English at home or in school, so that we may consider that information alongside the rest of your application. In addition to the TOEFL, we now accept the Duolingo English Test, IELTS, PTE Academic, and Cambridge English Qualifications (C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency).

• High School and College Transcripts: We require official transcripts from each high school attended, and either official or unofficial transcripts from any colleges attended (such as for dual enrollment programs). Read more about how to send transcripts.

You can find the 2023–2024 application essay questions on this webpage and refer to those in order to prepare. Depending on the question, we’re looking for responses of approximately 100–200 words each. Essay questions remain similar year-to-year, though we reserve the right to make changes up until the application opens in September.

MIT does not have minimum SAT/ACT test scores, grades, or courses required for applicants to be considered or admitted. However, please explore those links for more details and preparation recommendations.

We do have minimum and recommended scores for our English language tests. The minimum TOEFL score is 90, and the recommended score is 100.

English Proficiency Exam scores are required of all international applicants unless 1) your native language is English or 2) English is the primary language of instruction in your secondary school. Can I apply to more than one program at GSAS?
You may not submit more than one application per term to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS). However, you may elect to have your application reviewed by a second program or department within GSAS if you are not offered admission by your first-choice program. Please see this webpage for a more detailed explanation of this policy and the various restrictions that apply to a second choice.
You may apply concurrently to a program housed at GSAS and to programs housed at other divisions of the university. However, GSAS does not share application materials with other divisions; you must complete the application requirements for each school. 
Can you evaluate my chances for admission?
Faculty or administrators cannot evaluate your candidacy prior to submission of a complete application. After the complete application has been submitted, it will be carefully reviewed by the admissions committee.

Can I receive an application fee waiver?
All requests for fee waivers must be submitted through the online application.  See the Application Fee Waivers page, https://www.gsas.columbia.edu/content/application-fee-waivers, for specific instructions. 

Have you received my test scores?
Please self-report your test scores in your application, and upload a pdf of your score report. Given the volume of test scores we receive, processing of scores can take several weeks after the official scores are reported to us by the testing organization. You will be able to confirm receipt of your test scores on the checklist on the Application Status page when we have processed them. 

If you are submitting TOEFL or GRE scores, please make certain that your official score report was sent to GSAS institution code 2162. For additional information about submitting official exam scores, please review the Admissions Supporting Materials page of the GSAS website.

Can I add a new transcript, resume, etc to my application?
If you have new, or additional, materials you would like to include with your application you may upload them via the portal on the Application Status page. We cannot guarantee that these documents will be reviewed with your application, but you are welcome to include them. 

What is the status of my other submitted application materials?
Please log in to your Application Status Page to confirm the status of your application materials. Anything missing will be noted with a red X on the checklist. If every item on the checklist is complete, nothing further is needed at this time and your application is under review. You will be informed, via email, when a decision has been rendered on your application.

When will I receive a decision on my application?
We are unable to provide an exact date of when your application decision will be available nor can we expedite the application review process. Applications are reviewed by the faculty admissions committee. Be assured, you will be notified via email when a decision has been made on application.
