The Heartland War:
Admiral fought in the Heartland War, which was a war fought due to a disagreement about the morality of abortion. After the war, the Bill of Life was drafted. The Bill of Life was proposed by a group of men, including Admiral, and it was the institution of unwinding. Unwinding can occur between the ages of thirteen and eighteen and is a process that "[terminates]unwanteds without actually ending their lives" (Shusterman 224). Everyone believes that the unwinds live on through others and offering their body parts is some kind of a heroic deed.

Admiral = Jane Roe

Jane Roe promoted the right for women to abort their unborn babies. The Roe v Wade case went to Supreme Court, and they ruled that abortion is legal under some restrictions. However, today, Jane Roe wants to reverse the verdict of the case because she is now pro-life. This relates to Admiral because at first, he drafted the Bill of Life, which began unwinding. However, later after he unwound his son, he wanted to protect the unwinds.

Because of Admiral, Risa discovers that she has a special talent of healing others, and she is grateful for the experience she was not given in her state home: "The Admiral is an odd bird, but he'd done something no one else had been able to do for her since she'd left StaHo. He'd given her back her right to exist" (Shusterman 202). Risa expresses that Admiral gave her a reason to live.

Harlan Dunfee = Motivation for Creating "The Graveyard"

It is a believed legend that a boy named Humphrey Dunfee was unwound, and his depressed parents wanted to kill all those who received his parts. However, at the graveyard, Admiral tells Connor that "Humphrey" was his son Harlan, and the legend was untrue. Admiral was one of the first to unwind his son: "'As one of the fathers of the Unwind Accord, I was expected to set an example'" (Shusterman 225). Admiral believed he needed to put unwinding into motion and be the precedent of the process. However, Admiral and his wife changed their minds about unwinding Harlan... but it was too late. Admiral's wife left him and formed a foundation for Harlan while Admiral became a drunk. However, three years after Harlan was unwound, Admiral had the idea to create a place of protection and safety for AWOL teens. It is because of Harlan's unwinding that the Admiral had the idea to help others who were going to be unwound: "'It's only because of his unwinding that you're all here'" (Shusterman 225).

In order to prevent AWOL teens from being brought to harvest camps for unwinding, Admiral created the graveyard. Admiral established the graveyard to save many kids' lives from unwinding: "'To date I've saved more than a thousand kids from unwinding'" (Shusterman 225). This quote explains that so much good as come out of the graveyard, and Admiral is responsible and the reason for saving all the lives of these children. The graveyard is a place of safety and protection, and it is the reason Connor and Risa are alive. Connor and Risa are two runaway teens who ended up at the graveyard, which ultimately spares their lives.

Not only is the graveyard a place where the unwinds' lives are spared, the graveyard is a home: "'This will be your home until you turn eighteen or we procure a permanent sponsor wiling to falsify your identification. Make no mistake about it: What we do here is highly illegal, but that does not mean we don't follow the rule of law. My law'" (Shusterman 181). Admiral explains that the graveyard is a home for the unwinds, and it is where they will be protected and supported. Moreover, even though the graveyard is illegal, Admiral continues running it for the sole protection of the children.
