Celebrating Autism Awareness and Acceptance day in our school.

Students watched a video clip to promote a more inclusive environment about peers with autism. Statements related to video clip were read and students had to respond true or false. After all students took part in building up a tree using colourful puzzle pieces. Activity was very informative and fun.

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a developmental disorder characterized by behavioral and communicational affections that impact a person’s ability to navigate social interactions and also causes repetitive and restricted behavior.

The first historical appearance of the word “Autism” was made in 1911 by the psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler, who used the term to describe a specific cluster of symptoms that were considered simple symptoms of schizophrenia as an extreme social withdrawal.

In that order, it was in 1943, when pediatric psychiatrist Dr. Leo Kanner characterized Autism as a social and emotional disorder in his article “Autistic Disturbances of Affective Contact”, and in 1944 Hans Asperger published his “Autism Psychopathology Article” where he described autism as a disorder of normal intelligence children who have difficulties with social and communication skills. These articles were an important contribution to the studies that helped to classified Autism as a disorder separate from schizophrenia in 1980.

With the continuous investigation and research on autism, World Autism Awareness Day was set to April 2 of each year by the “United Nations General Assembly” on “Resolution 62/139” and adopted on December 18 of 2007, to encourage member states to take action in raising awareness about people with autism spectrum disorder and support the research finding new ways to improve wellness and inclusion.

Finally, the notion of autism as a spectrum was developed in 2013 by the “American Psychiatric Association” in the fifth edition of the “Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders” by combining all subcategories of autism and related conditions into one unified category, including varied characteristics, severity, and presentation of the symptoms.

TRADITIONS OF THE DAY

World Autism Awareness Day celebrates the resilience of those affected by the disorder and support causes that promote awareness of it. Children in schools are educated about autism and encouraged to be accepting of it. As autistic children are subjected to bullying, it is very important for their peers to be tolerant and inclusive of them. The signs of autism are at times not so prevalent, which is why adults (especially parents) are also educated on this matter. Local businesses and shopping centers are also big on autism awareness, and a portion of their sales go towards autism causes and organizations.

BY THE NUMBERS

1 in 59 – the number of children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in 2018.

1 in 37 – the number of boys with ASD.

1 in 151 – the number of girls with ASD.

4 – the age after which most children are diagnosed with ASD.

31% – the percentage of children with an intellectual disability due to ASD.

2-18% – the percentage of chances of parents having a second child with ASD after the first one.

What causes Autism?Scientists found recently that many genetic mutations can be associated with autism, the results show that there are more than 100 autism risk genes. But also most of the cases have a complex combination of genetic and environmental factors.

How can I know if my child has autism?Autism is not diagnosed until the age of 2 years and only a specialist (psychologist, psychiatrist, neurologist) can diagnose it, but there are some things to look for, like lack of sharing sound, smiles and facial expressions by 9 months or forming words by 16 months.

I have at least one student with Autism Spectrum Disorder almost every year. They all show different charasterics, traits and behaviors. Because I am a school counsellor I assist teachers of those students about their educational needs. We decide how to prepare a learning plan for those children, together with their parents. Our school is a kindregarten so we include arts activities, music and play according to the needs of children as well as other academic subjects. We inform other children and families about the needs of those special children. So,
other children build emphaty towards their friends. This establishes a comfortable and inclusive environment for the children with autism.

I worked with two students with ASD, one needed special learning program and had problem with socialization. We focused mainly for her to feel accepted and to work in cooperation with other students. At the third year of learning she was able to endure the eye contact and she was able to start conversation on her on. We were so happy. She has finished her education as a cook and she has a job and can take care of her self. Other student had high IQ and social issues, he was able to learn on his own and we worked on his social skills, unfortunately he became an computer addict and that also affect his social skills.

Last year, to celebrate World Autism Awareness Day – April 2nd, some of our students wrote short essays using some specific words (autism, patience, joy, play, friendship, sadness), and other students painted various symbols, landscapes and paintings in blue – the specific color of this day. Children’s paintings were presented in the blue collages virtual exhibition.
Two years ago, students under the guidance of their teachers, made and offered blue ribbons to all students and teachers in the morning of April 1st.

It's difficult to find resources for each subject in our language.Teachers haven't received professional training on this topic.It depends on each teacher to find resources, to try to adapt the materials we teach for every student having a disability.
I propose to have in all schools a SEN teacher who could stay in the school every day and to have a pedagogical counselor, a nurse , a psychologist.The majority of special schools where closed, we have to integrate students with SEN but how? I can see teachers are struggling to help them but without having a necessary budget from the school.They do so voluntary , using their own resources.I have a SEN student in one of my classes and I find it difficult to work with.It would be easier to have a teacher assistant or a SEN teacher permanently in our classes.
For such types of students it's also important to have a friendly environment in the classroom, to have a special corner where the student can feel relaxed and calm.

I found out that my students love the series "The Good Doctor" and last year I decided to mark Autism Awareness Day by using a movie clip and exploring it. I have a student with ASD. He communicates very little and prefers to work alone. He likes computers. I make my lesson materials on an online platform, and a post them on Google Classroom, and this really helped. He is interested in seeing the images, watching the films, playing the games, solving the puzzles I incorporate in the lessons. I talked to him trying to find a way to help him study (he does not have a severe form of autism) and he told me the games are a powerful help. In classes I let him work alone if he does not want to be part of a group and I explain to him again, personally, if it is necessary, the tasks if I see he does not work and is doing something else. Sometimes he does not work, and I do not insist, but I try to talk to him from time to time because I noticed a change in his attitude and interest in what is going on in the class if he feels I care.

I have been working with students with autism and indeed it is a constant challenge. We always have to be ready to learn! The biggest difficulty I feel has to do with the relational problems that most of the students feel. They suffer a lot because they have difficulties understanding others and being understood. And when they grow up and fall in love... it becomes more difficult for us to respond to their anxieties.

I tried to approach Arpi's situation very calmly, although sometimes he got angry with his colleagues and became violent! We listened to him when he told us his story, we listened to him when we taught the lesson and he started to complete it, we listened to him when no one in the class listened to him and we congratulated him for his knowledge! He was so happy when I told him he was 10!
I'm glad I had this theme because I was able to remember Arpi! My most valuable student! Maybe in another country, with specialized help, he would have been a good history teacher! But it was very difficult for him to make friends in class! Colleagues did not understand him and did not have patience with him! Maybe because he was a little violent at times and threw things at them!
We must be new examples for them and be patient, tolerant and accept the other as he is!
Strategies for students with autism:
-patience, empathy, resilience, tolerance
-visual learning: videos, movies, maps
-visual support to support the lesson
-colleague support
-a learning partner, a tolerant colleague
-communication through drawings, pictures
-familiar learning space
-help of an assistant
