Our Community Service

For our community service impact we decided to uplift spirits and write cards filled with words of affirmation to have sent out to children who unfortunately suffer from cancer. The cause we are volunteering for is Pediatric Cancer which is childhood cancer. This is a topic close to our hearts because Aaron has a little cousin who sadly passed away early last year due to brain cancer, throughout the past years we have become very close with the PCRF(Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation) which raises money for cancer research. Due to this we were fortunate enough to take place in a new project where cards filled with positive phrases are written and delivered to the children to help lift their spirits and assure them that they are strong and to keep fighting.

I had the idea to do this as our community service impact project because its a subject very close to my heart and family. Over the past couple years my family has gone through many ups and downs due to childhood/ Pediatric Cancer. My little cousin was 6 years old when she passed away due to the rare case of brain cancer DIPG on Valentine's day in 2023. So when we received the assignment I instantly knew this is what I wanted to do for it. I felt very good doing this project knowing I was helping children who are going through tough times. Even if it's just a card it gives them encouragement and can brighten their day. The main obstacle we went through was schedule clashes, it was difficult to find a time where nobody had anything planned and we could get together to do our project but we worked it out eventually. Something I learned doing this project was that there are many more children and families going through this than I thought there was. I never recognized how many people had been affected by the unfortunate diagnosis of cancer until being able to do more research and ask questions. But most importantly we learned a valuable lesson of giving back to the community and being able to enjoy doing so. This was a great experience and I would 100% do it again as well as recommend it to others.

Our plan for this project was to write cards to children who are currently fighting for their lives. We used different art supplies and cards given to us by Aaron's mother. In each card, we wanted to write words of encouragement to raise the children's spirits during this difficult time. A few examples of what we wrote are they are loved, strong, a fighter, we believe in them, and they are surrounded by love and support. All of these children deserve nothing but the best in life, so our goal is to put even the slightest smile on their faces.

Connections

Connections we made from this experience to something we've read in class are like how William Kamkwamba created his windmill to help others even though they didn't think much of it he still followed through and it benefitted the people. Like that making simple cards doesn't seem like a huge thing that will make drastic changes but to the right people it does, we did a small thing that might not usually be seen as helpful and we did it for the people we knew it would be impactful for. Another connection we made from our project to reading was how the animals collectively worked together to lift each other up in the novel Animal Farm. This relates to our experience because we worked together to stay productive and positive. Throughout the book, they help each other which is exactly what we did, which connects some aspects of the novel a lot to our experience in community service.

Final Reflection - Emily K.

I did this for my project, because Aaron and I wanted to work together and he had a really good idea for this assignment. His idea was to write cards for sick children through the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation and in memoriam of his little cousin, Bailey. I was more than willing to write cards to these children, especially after hearing and reading about his cousin's story. During this assignment I felt different kinds of emotions. I was happy to be doing something for these children, but at the same time, it was saddening knowing that they are currently fighting for their lives. No child should ever have to go through something like this in their lifetime, so it is important we help them understand that there are so many people rooting for them, even if they are family, friends, or even strangers. I learned that doing something nice for anyone isn't a difficult task, and it could really mean a lot to them even if they're having a good or bad day. This project only took about 2.5 hours, so it wasn't too challenging. The main obstacle was schedule conflict. Aaron, Danny, Ryan, and I had completely opposite schedules and we couldn't find a day where any of us were available. Unfortunately we had to split up, so only Aaron and I did this project together. On Friday (May 10th), I went to Aaron's house and we made 37 cards total with the help of his little sister, Nytha, as well. It was fun doing this project together, and we had a good time. What made this even better was we were working together as a team to make someone else's day a better one. This was truly a bittersweet moment but all worth it in the end.
