1. Both Barack Obama and Arnold Schwarzenegger provided their backstory in the beginning of their speech. For example Obama says

"Her father worked on oil rigs and farms through most of the Depression. The day after Pearl Harbor my grandfather

signed up for duty; joined Patton’s army, marched across Europe. Back home, my grandmother raised a baby and went to work on a bomber assembly line. After the war, they studied on the G.I. Bill, bought a house through F.H.A., and later moved west all the way to Hawaii in search of opportunity." Then Arnold also says in his speech "When I was a boy, the Soviets occupied part of Austria. I saw their tanks in the streets...I remember the fear we had when we had to cross into the Soviet sector."
2. In addition, both candidates support their party Representative running for presidency. Obama says

"In this election, we offer that choice. Our Party has chosen a man to lead us who embodies the best this country has

to offer. And that man is John Kerry." An Arnold also talks about George W. Bush "We are one America -- We are one America and President Bush is defending it with all his heart and soul."
3. They both also refer to the American Dream. Obama says

"They imagined -- They imagined me going to the best schools in the land, even though they weren’t rich,

because in a generous America you don’t have to be rich to achieve your potential." Arnold then says "You know, someone once wrote: There are those who say that freedom is nothing but a dream. They are right. It's the American dream. "

1) In both of the speeches, Obama and Schwarzenegger used the rhetorical appeal of pathos. They both specifically use the skill of story-telling that both talked about the hardships that their family has been through in the past. In Obama' speech " While studying here, my father met my mother. She was born in a town on the other side of the world, in Kansas. Her father worked on oil rigs and farms through most of the Depression."

In Schwarzenegger's speech he stated in page 13 " When I was a boy, the Soviets occupied part of Austria. I saw their tanks in the streets. I saw communism with my own eyes. I remember the fear we had when we had to cross into the Soviet sector."

2) In Obama's and Schwarzenegger's speech, they are repetitive with their ideas' and beliefs. On page 21 of Obama's speech he constantly repeats the ideals' of John Kerry , "

John Kerry believes in an America where all Americans can afford the same health coverage our politicians in Washington have for themselves."

3) In their speeches, both politicians emphasize how they want to make a better future for america.
In both Arnold's and Obama's 2004 Convention speeches, they both tell their backgrounds of either themselves or a family member. For example, in paragraphs 4-5 in Obama's speech and in paragraph's 8-10 in Arnold's speech. Another similarity includes that both think that America is one of the greatest country's. This would be evidenced by both talking about America by Arnold saying , "America is the highest economic growth of any of the world's major industrialized nations." and Obama expressing what his father thought, as in "that shone as a beacon of freedom and opportunity to so many who had come before."
