Book Review
I really enjoyed this book. I liked that it was similar in someways to the Cinderella fairy tale but it has its own twist. The quality of this book is really good it has some aspects that are funny and it also shows that when you truly love some one you put them before yourself. The advice I can give another reader is that to have fun while reading this book.
Ella Enchanted is about a girl cursed from birth to be obedient. At 15 her mother dies and the the funeral she meets Prince Charmont and they become fast friends. Soon after she is sent to finishing school with two terrible girls name Hattie and Olive. The two girls soon realize that Ella will do anything that she is told and they take advantage of that. Ella eventually runs away from finishing school to find Lucinda the fairy and ask her to take away the terrible curse she bestowed on her. Her attempt failed and she had to go home where her father was to marry Dame Olga. With Dame Olga as her Step Mother and Hattie and Olive as her step sisters Ella is forced to become a servant in her own house. Ella still corresponds with Char and they start falling in love. Ella starts to realize that they couldn't have a future together because the curse that she has could be used against Char to hurt him. She decides that it is best to break Char's heart to keep him safe. Soon after there is a ball to be help in Char's honor and Ella goes in disguise and dances with Char all 3 nights of the ball.
During the 3rd night Ella is unmasked by Hattie. When Char realizes who it is he confesses he still wants to marry her. Even though he step mother and sisters push her to marry him to get what they want. She finally breaks the curse by refusing their orders to marry him. Now that Ella is not under any curse she accepts Char's proposal and they live Happily Ever After.

Defining Quote
" Though I've grown old, the bell still rings for me as it does for all who truly believe." I chose this quote because I loved that it showed how he changed from the start of the book to the end. At the beginning of the book he had doubts that Santa really existed and he goes through this incredible journey where at the he can't help but not believe. I think that when children read this book hopefully at the end if they are on the edge of believing they will realize no matter how old you are you can still believe. I loved this book because even though I am an adult myself I believe in the magic that is still in the world.

Louisa: The Life of Louisa May Alcott

Book Review

Since Little Women has always been one of my favorite books I have wanted to know more about it's author. Louisa came from a poor family. Her father was a teacher and his ideas were considered unconventional. Louisa and her family moved around a lot but she spent a lot of her life in Concord Massachusetts. That is where she started writing. At seventeen she started working as a teacher and looked after children in Boston. While Louisa was in Boston her sister Elisabeth had gotten sick and Louisa came back home just in time to tell her goodbye. In 1862 Louisa decided to to be a nurse for the Union Army during the Civil War. She spent her days giving out rations, cutting up food and dressing wounds. Louisa was only a nurse for a month before she came down with typhoid fever. After she recovered a publisher approached her and asked if she could write a "girls boo." The result of that her writing Little Women. The book was based off of her and her sisters experiences they had together. Louisa wrote a sequel to Little Women called Jo's Boys which unfortunately was her last book. Louisa May Alcott died on March 6, 1888 at the age of 55 from pneumonia. I really think the quality of this book is great because it gave me a lot of information that I wanted to know. I also really liked the illustrations in this book were very good and detailed. The advice I can give a reader is to actually read Little Women and you will understand why this author is so great.

The BFG

Book Review
I really enjoyed this book because of the way the BFG would say silly words and people wouldn't understand what he meant.
The BFG is a story about a Big Friendly Giant who gives dream to children. One night while he is out blowing dreams into children's bedrooms he is watched by a little girl in a orphanage named Sophie. Once the BFG notices her watching him she snatches Sophie takes her back to giant country. While in giant country the BFG and Sophie become fast friends. She learns how he catches dreams and that he has been eating nasty snozzcumbers instead of humanbeans like the rest of the giants. Once discovering how terrible these giants are Sophie decides that something needs to be done about them. So the BFG and Sophie come up with a plan to get the Queen of England to believe their story and get her help to defeat the giants. The BFG makes such a terrible dream about the giants coming and snatching up boys and girls from their beds and eating them. Once the Queen awakens from her the dream she puts it off as just a terrible dream until she sees Sophie sitting on her window sill just like in her dream. Sophie and the BFG tell her that her dream is real and something needs to be done about the giants. The Queen agrees and the calls the Army and Air Force to come help. The head out to giant country and capture all of the giants and put them in a deep deep hole where they have to eat snozzcumbers forever. In the end the BFG was able to live outside giant country in his own blowing dreams into children's bedrooms whenever he pleased and Sophie never had to go back to the orphanage. The quality of this book is very good because of the language it makes you think of what he's really saying and it's funny in my opinion. The advice I can give the reader is to be able to not so serious while reading this book and be able to read and be silly with the BFG.

The Great American Dust Bowl

Short Write
What I learned about this time period?
In this book I learned that this was a terrible time in American history.
Even though this part of history is considered a tragedy I believe the Dust Bowl was caused by people who lived in that area during the time. The Indians and bison lived together on the plains for century before the settlers came. Once the settlers came the Indians were pushed on to reservation and the buffalo were almost hunted to extinction. The ranchers though that the cattle could survive off the grass just as the buffalo did but what happened was the cattle ate all of the grass but it didn't provide the cattle with the nutrients they needed to survive so they died. So there went one of their resources of food. When WWI came around there was a famine across America. Since everybody was hungry the price of wheat went up and that mean a lot of farmers started to over plow their fields. Even though the business of wheat was growing after the war the prices of wheat were next to nothing and the droughts and dust storms started. I can't blame these people for taking advantage of the market at the time but it is good that our government finally did something about it. They replanted the buffalo grass and started planting more trees. They also finally taught the farmers how to till the ground without injuring the soil.

Day of the Dragon King

Book Review
I have always liked the quality of the Magic Tree House Series. I think it was these books that got me interested in history as a kid. The book I read was the Day of the Dragon King . It is about the first Chinese Emperor who called himself the "Dragon King". At the beginning of the book Jack and Annie go on a mission to China to bring back a story for Morgan Le Fay. Once in ancient China they find out the Dragon King is an evil man and plans to burn all the books in the imperial library because he is afraid of the power that books and learning have on people. Along the way Jack and Annie meet a man who asks them to deliver a message to silk weaver so that she will meet him there at twilight. Once inside the city they find the silk weaver and deliver the mans message in return she gave them a ball of silk string. When they go deeper into the city they see black some rising into the air and so they race towards hoping to get to the book they need in time. Jack and Annie are able to get the story but are almost captured by the emperors men until they run into a room with 1,000s of Terracotta soldiers and the emperors soldiers will not chase after them in there. The two find themselves lost until the silk which seems to be alive leads them out. They finally make it back to the tree house just in time to see the young couple meeting outside the window.Once they get the book back to Morgan they discover what the story was about and they actually got to meet he couple who was in love in the story. The advice I can give the reader is keep reading the Magic Tree House Series because Jack and Annie's story doesn't stop here.

Mozart: The Wonder Child

Short Write
Why did I choose to read this book for this genre?
I chose this book for the biographical genre. I thought it was interesting the way the author separated Mozart's life into three acts like in a play. Even though Mozart lived to be only 35 she was able to accomplish so much at a young age. I also really liked that the illustrations were of the characters being puppets and that she also put side notes on the pages to give a definition of a word or a fun fact that we didn't know about Mozart. I think this is a good representation of the genre because of the details in facts that were used.

Esperanza Rising

Book Review
I loved reading this book it was so great to watch Esperanza's character change from being a selfish child to a strong and courageous young women. The quality is amazing and I loved that the author put some Spanish words throughout the story. Esperanza Rising is about a girl who lived with her Mama and Papa in Mexico at El Rancho de las Rosas. Esperanza felt like she had everything in the world until her Papa was killed by bandits. After he died her whole world started to crumble her home and the land went to her uncle and when her mama refused his marriage proposal he burned down the house and Abeulita broke her ankle. Since their life in Mexico was in ruins Esperanza and mother decided to go to California to escape the Uncle and build a new life by working in the fields. Even though it took Esperanza awhile to adjust to life without being waited on she soon started to like her new life until tragedy struck again. Her mama became ill with Valley Fever and had to be hospitalized. Esperanza soon started to work in the shack packing fruits and veggies to pay for mama's medical bills and to get money orders to try and get Abuelita from Mexico. The whole time she was working in the shack there was the threat of strikes and them losing their jobs and it made Esperanza discouraged and thought there was no hope. One day her childhood friend Miguel left without a word to Esperanza and she believed it was her fault because he had hurt his feelings by telling him he was just still a peasant. After another month mama was able to come back from the hospital still weak but able to come home. That is when Esperanza noticed the money to get her grandmother home was missing and she was sure that Miguel had taken it. One day while she was at work Miguel's parents came and got her and took her to the bus station. When they arrived at the bus station they thought it was only going to be Miguel but it also happened to be Esperanza's Abueltia. Miguel took the money so he could be able to bring her home to them. Esperanza was so happy and so was her Mama. At the end of the story she finally realizes there is always hope and that you should never be afraid to start again. The advice I can give the reader is the one Esperanza gives at the very end and it is to never be afraid to start again if you mess up.

Book Review
I really liked this graphic novel!
It had a different adventure throughout the story. In one story Grumpy and Pokey were doing a magic show and to make it more exciting they got a real magic book and performed a spell which made a monster come out and grumpy and pokey didn't notice! But the audience sure did the illustrations in the book are really detailed and cool I loved reading it. I also thought what was funny about the book was that grumpy and pokey are opposites and pokey always gets grumpy into situations. The advice I can give the reader is keep on reading even thought its not your typical book and the words are small at the end of it all it really makes you laugh.

Book Review
I loved reading this book. It really showed a great representation of how life was in that time period. The story is about a little girl named Laura Ingalls and she lives with her Ma , Pa and her sisters Mary and Carrie in the big woods. Laura goes through many things in the story. First we are in the fall preparing for winter by storing vegetables in the attic and killing the pig to have its meat to save for winter. During this time they have to stay inside and Pa will either tell them stories or play them songs on his fiddle. Once the sugar snow starts to set they go to their grandparents where there is going to be a big dance to celebrate all the syrup coming from the trees. Once spring came Mary and Laura are able to run and play but, they also helped Ma make butter, cheese, and helped clean the house. Once the summer arrived Pa was out getting the so he could turn it in to grain. Then again we go to the fall where they start stock piling up for the long winter. The quality of this book is great because you see this part of history through a child's eyes not just an adults. The advice I can give the reader is to dive in this book and enjoy it.

I found this book really interesting. It gave a small insight of when Washington and his troops crossed the Delaware. Jack and Annie traveled back to that time so that they could find the "something to send" for Morgan la Fey. Once arriving they are in a middle of a snow drift where they come upon these soldiers and Jack and Annie are trying to figure out if their patriots or red coats. Turns out they were patriots. There was a soldier from Frog Creek Pennsylvania just like where Jack and Annie are from. After they talk to that soldier Jack and Annie wandered around and decide to split up. Jack is stopped by the soldier from Frog Creek and is given a letter to "send" to his children if this mission goes a miss. Now that Jack has the letter he has to find Annie so they can go home. He finds Annie in the boat that is going to take Washington across the Delaware! Jack tries to get Annie out of the boat but it is too late and they start to cross the river. They are soon discovered by George Washington who is starting to think this plan they are about do is a mistake until Annie reminds him of the speech he made to this troops and they hope it gave them. Jack and Annie are then sent back across the river where they head back to the tree house and return home. The quality of this book is great because it give you so much information on that part of history. The advice I give the reader is after reading this book you should go look for more information about the revolutionary war.

It is quite an adventure. I also like how the author would put little snippets of his own voice in the book. Some other people while reading this book might not like it because of that.

Book Review
I'm torn on whether I like this book as much as I liked the other ones I've read. The reason I feel this way was because of the way Nefatalis was treated by his father. Nefatlis is a boy growing up in Chile. His father always thinks that he is a silly fool for being a dreamer. By the time Nefatali was 6 years old he liked to collect things and write. His father had so many big plans for him and his siblings Rodolfo and Laurita. But through all of the harsh words and so called trainings Nefatlis held on to what made him a dreamer. That's the reason why I liked this book. The advice I can give the reader is if someone is making you feel like Nefatli did hold on to what makes you a dreamer and never lose it.

Book Review
I really liked this book because it made me wish I could see my relatives more often. This story is about a family in Virginia who takes a trip to go visit relatives some where else. Once they were there was so much love and hugs going around. There was always something to do and the relatives really helped out. The relatives stayed for several weeks and when it comes time for the relatives to go home there was many tears between them but, they knew they would see each other next summer.

Book Review

This book was very cute in my opinion. I loved how the author gave a little insight to the next part of the story on the borders of the illustrations. The story is about a little boy Nicki who wanted his Baba to make him a pair of white mittens. She was hesitant at first because she knew he was going to lose them in the snow. Nicki was persistent though and she made him the white mittens. Like Baba said when Nicki went out into the snow he dropped one of his white mittens. First a mole came upon the mitten and burrowed inside because it was warm and cozy. Next a rabbit came along and wriggled inside. Then a hedgehog moved in to warm himself with his prickly body. An owl comes along with his sharp talons decides to move in. When a badger came the all decided to give him the thumb. A fox came strolling past and he decided to take a nap inside. Next a bear who didn't want to be left out in the cold decided to squeeze himself in. Lastly came a mouse who wriggled into the last spot on the bears nose and made herself comfortable. The bear who was tickled by the mouse's whiskers gave an enormous sneeze and blew everybody out of the mitten. Nicki who realized he had lost his mitten floating down to the earth. He caught it and when Baba was looking out the window she first looked to see if Nicki was safe then to see he if he still has his new mittens. The advice I can give the reader is to read more of Jan Brett's books because the illustrations are amazing.

Book Review
I really liked this book because I thought Bud was really funny. He would have rules about how to be a good liar. This book is about a boy on a journey to find his dad. He believes his dad to be a man his mother saw on a blue flyer. Bud runs away from his foster home because he is accused of beating up his foster brother and was locked in the shed. Then Bud meets up with his friend Bugs and they decide to jump on the train together to ride the rails. Bugs makes it but Bud can't keep and is left behind. Bud decides to walk to grand rapid when a man picks him and Bud thinks he's a vampire because he has viles of blood in his car. Bud tries to drive away with the car but it only goes 30 ft and stops. Mr. Lewis proves that he is not a vampire and agrees to take him to grand rapids back to his dad. Once he gets to the house of Herman Calloway and Bud tells him he is his daddy. Herman thinks Bud has an agenda planned and is very rude to him. The rest of the band welcomes Bud with open arms. After a while Bud starts to learn the saxophone and being comfortable where he's at. Herman catches Bud looking at his mama's rocks and accuses him of stealing he says no these were my mama's. They all realize then that Bud is not his son but his grandson. The advice I can give the reader is to laugh at the things Bud does but also understand the seriousness of it.

A Chair For My Mother

Book Review
I really thought this book was a good representation of what hard work can give you. This story is about a little girl, her mama and grandma. They had lost everything in a fire. When they moved into their new place their relatives and neighbors gave them stuff that they would need. The one thing that they didn't have was a chair. Mama worked and saved all her tips and the little girl also saved the coins that she received and put them in a jar. One day it was so full mama brought home paper to roll the coins and then they took them to the bank to cash it in. After that they were able to get the chair mama wanted. The advice I can give the reader is never underestimate what hard work can give you.

So you want to be an Explorer?

Book Review
I really liked this book because of the illustrations and giving advice on how to be an explorer. One said explorers have curiosity and they talk about how 17 year old Marco Polo was a curious kid and said goodbye to Italy and headed to Asia. Also explorers tackle a quest with gusto. Great wasn't added to Alexander's name for nothing. He began to conquer the known world. Explorers are risk takers Barbara Washborn was hardly a risk taker she was secretary and she ended up climbing the Alaskan Mountains this book made it clear their is several ways to be an explorer you just need to try.

Book Review
I thought this book was really cute and it really gave some useful information about dogs. First it tells you whens the best time to get a dog, how to train them, and tell when they dogs are upset, sad happy. I like that it was simplified for the kids and I think parents who decided to get a dog and have small children should get this book. The advice I can give the reader is to be serious when you get any type of pet because they are a responsibility.
