I started the year off with a pencil procedure that I had heard good things about (sharp and dull bins). However, I am quickly realizing that I need to change it up. My students have gone through a crazy amount of pencils and it is only week 4. I am considering coming up with a reward system where I give a prize to the students who are able to keep track of the same pencil for the whole week.

At my school, we have a school-wide PBIS system called HEROES shields(Helpful, Engaged, Respectful, On task, Empowered, Successful). They are blue pieces of paper with a shield divided up into ten sections. Once each section gets signed by the teacher, the student can either put it in a save or spend bin (save=they have a chance at winning a large prize like an ipad at an assembly; spend=they can get a prize from my prize box at the end of each week). Every student will do absolutely anything for a hero shield and it seems to be working very well so far. For students who choose not to do their work, they have to finish it during recess. This works like a charm for 99% of my kids. If they are off task I will just remind them that they can choose to do it now or during recess and they will get back on task right away.

POSITIVE EXPECTATIONS

My principal is very adamant about "putting the positive on stage", rather than telling them over and over what they cannot do. Keeping with this theme, my team teacher and I decided to introduce class values instead of class rules. My class values are 1. We are kind 2. We try our best 3. We learn from our mistakes. We let every student know that these were our expectations and then had everybody sign it, including myself. We now start every day shouting these affirmations and I believe it is an effective way of reminding us of the *positive* expectations we have for each other as a class family.
