7. How would you describe Medina's report? Is her representation of gentrificatin in Santa Ana positive or negative?

Medina's report on gentrification was fairly negative. She goes into depth talking about how most immigrants originally had their shops there but now with all these new businesses opening many of them are shutting down and being replaced with tattoo shops, cafe's, etc. Most stores still have to pay taxes to their group even though they are still yet to get little business.

8. What aspect of gentrification in Santa Ana does Medina identify as being overlooked or "left unsaid?"

The aspect of gentrification left unsaid is that despite the fact that many new shop owners are also Latinos, they are 2nd and 3rd generation and are not as interested in keeping the culture in the area. The entire environment of what used to be the "Fiesta Marketplace" is changing to become more appealing to whiter, younger incoming people. The dying culture is being overlooked in favor of pleasing the majority and bringing it wealth. This is hurting old shop owners who can no longer afford to maintain their store, both because the sky-rocketing rent and new coming clients are not interested in the services of the older shops.

9. Medina's report was published in NEW YORK TIMES. What do you think this says about the issue of gentrification in Santa Ana and the United States as a whole?

The issue of gentrification is that they are more focused on luring in the wealthy, who are mostly white since the Latinos were the lower class. When they started changing things, they mostly changed the places that were of Mexican culture. They changed a place called "Fiesta Marketplace" to "East End" and changed pink buildings that might evoke a Mexican plaza were repainted in muted hues. The biggest issue is that gentrification is just taking the business of others and making them go bankrupt just for their own happiness.

Article - "New Faces and a Conscientious Revival"

Summary: In Medina's article, she starts off by saying that many stores are having trouble keeping up with the economy. The owners in downtown Santa Ana are mostly white, educated, middle-class men who are looking to attract more English-speaking clients to this part of OC. What many people don't know is that shop owners and clients are second and third generation Latinos. Even Carols Bustamante, a city councilman and Santa Ana native, says that he doesn't to buy his suits from any other place. There're quite a few stores that have shut down like a Mexican seafood restaurant and a jewelery shop. However, stores like a T-shirt and tattoo supply shop have been doing well in business. Customers are mostly children of immigrants which means that their parents might not want to spend their money, so they give it to their children to spend it in downtown Santa Ana. The majority of quinceanera shops have dried up. However, business like nightclubs and art galaries are bringing in more nightlife and wealthy people.
