         <description><![CDATA[<div>Baking soda and vinegar react chemically because one is a base and the other is an acid. Baking soda is a compound called sodium bicarbonate. Vinegar contains acetic acid. The baking soda and vinegar reaction is actually two separate reactions. The first reaction is the acid-base reaction. When vinegar and baking soda are first mixed together, hydrogen ions in the vinegar react with the sodium and bicarbonate ions in the baking soda. The result of this initial reaction results in carbonic acid and sodium acetate. The second reaction is a decomposition reaction. The carbonic acid formed as a result of the first reaction immediately begins to decompose into water and carbon dioxide gas. Just like carbon dioxide bubbles in a carbonated drink, the carbon dioxide (that formed as the carbonic acid decomposed) rises to the top of the mixture. This creates the bubbles and foam you see when you mix baking soda and vinegar. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div> Phenolphthalein is colorless in acidic solutions and turns pink in alkaline solutions. Sodium hydroxide is a base, so when you add phenolphthalein, the solution turns pink. This color change is a result of ionization, which alters the shape and charge of phenolphthalein molecules. Ionized molecules attract other molecules with the opposite charge and repel those with the same charge. With phenolphthalein, this also affects the molecule’s shape. The combination of shape and electric charge determine how a molecule responds to light. Normally, phenolphthalein is clear because all colors of light pass through it. When exposed to alkaline solutions, it begins to block the blue colors, which turns the light pinkish. The stronger the alkaline solution is, the more the phenolphthalein molecule changes and the darker the pink hue will be. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Merely mixing the two gases together at room temperature won't do anything, just like hydrogen and oxygen molecules in air don't spontaneously form water. Energy must be supplied to break the covalent bonds that hold H2 and O2 molecules together. This is why you add a spark to do the reaction. The hydrogen cations and oxygen anions are then free to react with each other when you add the spark, which they do because of their electronegativity differences. When the chemical bonds re-form to make water, additional energy is released, which forms the reaction. This reaction is exothermic. </div>]]></description>
