The famous Canadian author Margaret Atwood, emphasizes and highlights the purpose and significance of this sequel for the entire world since as said in the video they not only needed it but wanted it. The Handmaid's Tale left numerous doubts and unfinished events, which created questions on the readers such as: How will Gilead end? How will it be to grow up across the border of Gilead? How did Aunt Lydia become aunt Lydia? , questions that she wanted to respond and explore for the second generation that would experience it. Also, because of the world's dynamic and uncertain political climate, it generated the push that she needed to write "The Testaments" a CULTURAL MOVEMENT. Movements and rebellions from younger people, from women, present campaigns, and elections from historical past and present events inspired this woman to set a voice in the book which represents the hope and the truth over the corrupted and unethical governments which rule the world and that are needed to be taken down.
Thank you, Level 4, Criterion C: Production of Texts

Why a sequel? Use your notes to jot down ideas.

Margaret Atwood mentioned the importance and how inspiring are the groups who fight for their rights as well as for nature. Most of the members of the mentioned groups are readers of her successful novel 'The Handmaid's Tale ' and are aware of the harmful consequences of governments with totalitarian principals. This audience claims and asked for the sequel to know if there is the hope of getting rid of Gilead's government but also from the real-life governments which disrespect rights, women's rights. Mainly, it was written to provide hope not only for the novel but in real life, since elections are coming and a government similar to Gilead's government cannot rule an entire society because the consequence is reflected on Atwood masterpiece and she does need to provide hope to her audience who cares about the earth and what surrounds it.
Thank you, level 4, Criterion C: Production of Texts.

Why a sequel? Use your notes to jot down ideas.
Margaret Atwood describes that the motivation is not directly Donald Trump's presidency, but rather the growing sentiment building up over the years for a sequel. She still had ideas she wanted to explore in Gilead, considering that so far she had not written about what a 2nd Generation would experience. She also mentioned in the 1st book that the regime did end, and in this book the writer could explore how and what has lead to the decay of Gilead.
However, the timing of the sequel is relevant, as the elections for the major countries of the world are coming up, and the behavior of these political leaders reflect a growing and dangerous sentiment. The writer identified this sentiment and noticed similarities that trace back in history and regimes.
Level 4, criterion C.

for Why a sequel? Use your notes to jot down ideas.
Margaret Atwood during both interviews clears away the doubts abut why she decided to produce the sequel after so long. She not only mentions what was her motivation but she also mentions what are her very utopic aspirations eventho she knows they would be very hard to achieve.
She wants to look through the perspective of a second generation on how to take on Gilead, given that in the previous book they mentioned Gilead didn’t last but it didn’t mention how. As we know Atwood has always taken help and perspective from the real world,in the testaments she is being motivated by nowadays politicians as Donald Trump. She is using situations such as in Bangladesh: comes out because they're like cows it's not real rape if the woman has a baby because if it's real rape her body shuts down. People can’t forget the chaos, they need to learn to stay sharp but keep yourself strong.
She mentions that there is an action-reaction of women wanting change and then taking it back seems cyclical in the modern world=because fear inspires us as it pushes us back. She tries to target her books to push citicens to try to change the perspective of women and/or men. Teenagers are the ones changing the world, according to her; she mentions that they are the only ones that try to fight for a change.
She also constantly mentions how she uses information from the real wrold, from the past 4'000 years; so that no one can argue about the type of governments of situations the societies have gone through. She mentions how many people don't even intervene in the chase for change, that they are sleepwalking. Not everyone sleepwalking but many of us are; What world you want to live in? search for it and help create it don’t wait for others.
Thank you for your input, it is really important for the whole class.

In my opinion, Margaret Atwood wrote a sequel because the world’s politicians are too corrupt and people who depend on them are too afraid to complain. For this reason, she uses her voice to expose the realities of this world, including women’s right and environmental change issues. Besides that, she mentions that her inspiration comes from the younger generations, who are in the most critical point since they are about to make the decisions that would redirect the countries political, economical and social issues from now on.
Thank you, level 4 Criterion C, production of texts.

It was never mentioned what happened or why it happened, and this sequel has the purpose of explaining how Gilead fell, and what Offred may be facing after leaving. So, it is a sequel also because of the inspiration she mentioned in her interview. She believes the Trump administration is somewhat like an inspiration, as well as the chaos happening in countries like Bangladesh.
Level 3, criterion C.

Use your notes to jot down ideas.
In the Handmaids Tale Margarett Auntwood tolds us about Giliad, what was that regime, its origin, and the story about Offred. But the book never told us how it all ended. Since we knew that the regime was falling apart but in the end we never knew how. And for someone as Margarett she also wanted to know how that political party ended. She said that she used the news paper and magazine of that time thats why in the novel many events that happen were reflected in the novel. That n the 90s people moved away from Giliad when the cold war had ended. But some time later people started to going back to that regime with horrible event like the 9/11, the finacial meltdown or the way that politicians expressed themselves. Those were some reasons that made her return to Giliad 16 years later to see how regime was endinng and giving an end to Offred story.
Level 4, criterion C

Not only to settle the struggles that may be revealed over human behavior but in the possible solutions that were presented since the launch of the first one. Certain events such as the election of Donald Trump on the presidency of the United States of America and the way in which the world is facing terrorist issues.

Why a sequel? Use your notes to jot down ideas.

The Handmaid's Tale, by Margaret Atwood, is a dystopia that warns us about the future. In the end, the regime, Gilead, was destroyed and the society had a big change. Because of this, it would be interesting to see the life of a second-generation living in new conditions. Also, in this book she can include details that she missed in the first book, so she can clarify some points left behind and fill some plot holes. Finally, it is an opportunity for Atwood to expose new worries she had during the time gap between the two books. You are writing predictions, but you must consider what she said in the interviews.

Why a sequel? Use your notes to jot down ideas.

Margaret Atwood has always been a fan of speculative fiction, where the writer uses history and past happenings to craft a future version of what our world would look like in the future. The Handmaid´s Tale was written with the purpose of showing the world what it would look like if we let the communist regime take over our civil liberties and after the book was released and the Berlin Wall fell it all seemed right. But since 9/11, political tension has increased which has given Atwood lots of material to inspire a new novel but she resisted to. But when the 2016 presidential election proved to be very controversial, Atwood must have realized she was re-living west Germany, which gives the necessity of a sequel.
Level 4, criterion C.

The first book only reveals some struggles about human behaviors including its consequences since we know Gilead is a dystopia society based on the events of those years.
Therefore, the purpose of this sequel is to adress why and how it falls apart including all the themes seen in the previous book. This sequel is a revolutionary book revealing ideals and themes seen on those years.
