I chose the song "I'm Going Through Changes" by Charles Bradley. This song was a good choice because Bradley has a powerful voice singing through his story with a slow tempo that allows for reflection and thought and is very thought provoking. I also thought this was a good song choice because the lyrics explain the high, lows, and changes of life with lyrics of "I feel unhappy, I feel so sad." and "I feel I can go back, change these years!" Highs, lows, and changes are present in any timeline of any global study. This years global study timeline is one of the many examples that show the highs, lows, and changes of history from the imaginative spark of European renaissance artists and the brutality that was cast upon African Americans during the slave trade!

"New Romantics" by Taylor Swift is a very good wrap up song for our timeline! Taylor has a very light and fun voice with a fun track playing behind her which allows for celebration of highs and lows which allows us to celebrate our historical highs and lows! Although Taylor explains her roller coaster of events through her career, the lyrics are fully interpretational and can perfectly fit through this years global studies. "We're so young, but we're on the road to something" can be tied into the Renaissance and the "young" creation of artistic techniques and value, from everything to paintings and plays by various artists! "We cry tears of mascara in the bathroom, honey life is just a classroom" can represent the brutality of the slave trade. Although slaves didn't cry in any bathrooms or even knew what mascara was, it shows their trauma and sadness and is followed by society's classroom learning that we need to treat everyone equally no matter the race. "Cause baby I can build a castle, out of all the bricks they threw at me" shows the motivation that drove the scientific revolution when the church discouraged scientific discoveries and theories but the kept their motivation to change the world, even with the "bricks" they threw at them! This song also can show us to learn from our lows and cherish the highs of our history and always reflect and never block it out with lyrics of "heart break is the national anthem, we sing it proudly!"

The Italian renaissance was a time period that birthed vast creativity and imagination to the majority of Italy's socially diverse population. The creative spark that was present during this time allowed for uncountable pieces of art. The arts were the centerpiece of this time from sculptures by world class artists like Michelangelo who sculpted David for the Florence monarchy, and paintings and literature from people who were born with nothing to their name such as Leonardo Da Vinci who painted Mona Lisa which is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of creation! The Italian renaissance is one of the most unique points in history because of how creatively motivated society was at this point. The huge demand of the arts caused a huge spread of various techniques and values which caused the northern renaissance to occur. Not to mention northern Europe also picked up societal and philosophical views from Italy which caused change from their government to just their daily lives! Today we can reflect back to this event, to light our own creative spark and explore the minds of the world renowned artists of the time period.‘Over the Rainbow’ from the Wizard of Oz shows Dorothy (Judy Garland) singing about a land over the rainbow and it sparks imagination and curiosity with lyrics of “And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true” and “If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow, why oh why can’t I?” Imagination and curiosity were what drove the Europeans to their artistic evolution as their improvement techniques allowed for masterpieces to be created that are still famous to this day!

The African slave trade was a very unique point in history because of each nations precise and specific role in the trading process. The slave trade consisted of North America, Africa, and Europe. The naval triangular route was always repeating as North America supplied common goods to Europe like cotton, sugar, and tobacco which were farmed by the slaves they received from Africa as the rulers sent them to America since they received weapons, literature, and textiles which were made from the goods that America supplied. It was essentially a never ending loop of trade. The sea was an easy and fast way to transport goods, slaves, etc. which allowed for vast trade to occur. This allowed for all three continents involved to receive huge income and slavery to become a norm. This specific event in history is very important because it made such a huge impact on not just historical society but also modern day society! The most unfortunate impact was how they treated innocent humans with just a different race. African slaves endured trauma and terror on their way to America. The large groups of slaves were crammed on boats with other cargo. Slaves would be able to enter the deck only on occasion to be beaten and tortured if they disobeyed any rules or tried to escape. They weren’t even given a name, only a price tag. The modern impact is how the slave trade dispersed more diversity to foreign countries as huge amounts of African slaves were shipped to almost all of North America. The slaves being dispersed really started the diversity we see today. ‘Rocket Man’ by Elton John tells the story of how he misses his old life before he was a celebrity and he was a rocket man because Hollywood ignited his rocket before he wanted to get off and he explains his painful journey to stardom and fame. Just like any song, the lyrics are fully interpretational and happen to fit into the slave trade. As he explains his rough journey he says “I miss the earth so much, I miss my wife.” This is similar to how slaves were split from their families and couldn’t see the light of day. “I’m not the man they think I am,” shows that the slaves are humans too and should not be mistreated and should not have gone through the pain they endured!

The scientific revolution was a time for huge innovation and discovery in the science world. Many famous scientists contributed to the many discoveries such as Galileo mapping the stars and space, Newton declaring the three laws of motion, and Andreas Vesalius making groundbreaking anatomical discoveries. This time of innovation was very difficult however because scientists faced numerous challenges with the Catholic church what was essentially the government at the time. The church opposed any form of scientific discovery because many findings disproved the bible which the church wanted society to live by. The scientists did not let the church stop their motivation to discover with many scientists disobeying the church’s orders with Galileo deciding to publish his work privately and Newton deciding to flat out publish his findings to the entirety of England! This time period is super important because the discoveries that the scientists made were not just remarkable but allowed for huge innovation that would have probably never been discovered today. Although Vesalius’ anatomical discoveries weren’t entirely correct it sparked more curiosity to other generations to improve his findings and now allow for remarkable life-saving surgeries to be performed today. The first thermometer was discovered by Galileo during this time and it was improved and is used today in the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic to spot a common side effect of the virus! We also can thank numerous Scientists such as Corpernicus, Kelper, and Galileo for mapping the sky and stars which allowed for landing men on the moon and the most current SpaceX launch! ‘Firework’ by Katy Perry is all about a spark of motivation that can turn into a firework if you don’t give up. “You just gotta ignite the light, and let it shine” explains the motivation of the scientists and how they never gave up their spark of motivation. “Baby you’re a firework, come on let your colors burst” shows the scientists finally sharing their knowledge by publishing their works like Galileo and Newton. “If you only knew what the future holds, after a hurricane comes a rainbow” happens to explain the discoveries and findings these scientists would discover that would one day change the world!
