So far I have been using generative AI software as a teaching topic, but in the last year I tried to teach students how to use it as a tool for diffeent class assignments; specificaly Chat-GPT, Stable Diffusion online, and lately DALL-E through Bing. In my experience, I have students between 16 and 25 years old. In my view there isn't that much info about the vast "capabailities" of AI and as such most, if not all students and colleagues, connect AI with chatboxes. For older students it sounds like the perfect way to avoid the pain of doing written assignments like esaays, reports, etc since everything can be easily and fast produced in a chatbox. I believe it's the teachers' responsibility to navigate students through the maze of new technologies and make them understand that their use can be both beneficial or detrimental depending on the ways we work with them. It's only the beginning, I suppose, and the course is rough. I'm sure that students can understand that they cannot "cheat" as long as their instructors / teachers try to stay informed and don't suffer from the common phobias for whatever is new and seems like an intruder to what is "well practised and tested" for long! As I work in an elementary school, I noticed that only students from higher grades (12 - 14 y.o.) use or comment on AI tools. They mostly use it for writing assignment which are done as homeworks. In my school context A.I. is rather something strange. Although students may believe that A.I. can do difficult tasks, they have little knowledge about how to employ e.g. Chatgpt for a particular task. I think the challenge is that all the A.I. tools to be employed should allow space for creativity and critical thinking for all and not reinforce "old" pedagogies.

I was pretty surprised to see that my students don't have any knowledge about AI. They have heard something about ChatGPT and a couple or three of them have given it a try, but more in a playful way than to use it for their learning or even for cheating!

They were surprised how biased and rasist the chat can be (e.g. they asked the chat to create a short story, and one of the names used was of Nigerian origin - the character with the name was always a slave or a black character in the chat-created stories. Many of my students haven't heard of AI or they haven't used it. But I see the number of students who try to use it is increasing. One of my students tried to use it to cheat on a written exam. Of course, I immediately knew that was not her work. Instead of punishing her, I used it as a learning opportunity to show my students that AI can be very helpful if you know how to use it. I know that some of our students try to use the opportunity of getting their task done by AI. As my subject is physics, and as I make the essay tasks pretty specific, it is not an easy job for the IA. I am working as a language teacher at a secondary school, so I get a lot of essays. I had a few students who have shamelessly used AI (which backfired), and I even have students who shun it because they are scared of AI detection tools, etc. However, AI isn't perfect (yet). My students, in general, use AI in a rather uncritical way, simply to copy and paste. I don't see, as of yet, a reflection on the use of AI, nor an interest in learning how to use it effectively. I believe the real challenge for educators remains inspiring a passion for learning. Only under this condition can we truly leverage AI for assessment purposes.
