Using cognates is a fantastic idea until it's not :) It is easy to assume that students have academic language in their L1 when they don't. For example: "democracy" and "democracia" are cognates, but students usually don't know what those concepts are in any language unless we explicitly teach them.

encouraging students to recognize AND annotate cognates, specifically in prefixes, root words, and suffixes. This is transferrable to more than just this one word, and it is helpful in multiple subject areas.
this is helpful for multiple levels of learners -- we are noticing a need for this in both Read 180 up to AS/AP levels (of English, because we are both English teachers)
Framing language work (reading, writing, thinking) as WORK. Acknowledging that it is challenging and hard.

I have my English 1 students complete a journal prompt a few times per week. But I’m thinking about offering the opportunity for them to write in their first language if that feels more comfortable because there are lots of students at our school who speak another language at home and this is a way to encourage them to brainstorm and pull on all of their language knowledge.
