I would consider Markus Zusak’s work as about an 80/20 split for independent and school reading. 80% personal reading vs 20% school assigned reading. My reasoning for considering his work this way is mostly my own personal experience. in my personal life I have had The Book Thief recommended to me numerous times. I picked this book up and read it and enjoyed it. My friends that recommended it did not consider it to be a Young Adult novel necessarily. This particular book could be considered educational for the fact that it is set in the holocaust. A could see many teachers using this book as an approachable introduction for students learning about the holocaust. Even considering this, it is written in a way that is approachable and easy to read for people who are not in school. Zusak’s other work is formatted toward a young adult audience but is not a subject matter that is inherently educational.

According to several non-scholarly websites evaluating Zusak’s work, his books are appropriate for age 13+. I agree with this assessment. Zusak writes uncensored about issues that might be hard for younger people to understand or relate to. I think the vocabulary and style in which Zusak writes is limiting toward average elementary school students but is appropriate for middle school and older readers. Zusak has expressed that in his writing of The Book Thief he did not have a particular age range in mind. Zusak felt the freedom to write in his own voice and style and did not write that particular book in a style that would meet a certain age.

Zusak, Markus. The book thief. Picador, 2005.

The Book Thief is historical fiction based in Nazi Germany. The story is narrated by Death and centered around a young German girl named Leisel. Leisel’s parents harbor a Jewish man to protect him from Nazi powers. The relationship between Leisel and Max serves to change them both throughout the story. The success of this book is in the way black humor is employed to lighten up the very dark nature of this book. I find this book to be suitable for all readers and at a middle school reading level. I could easily see this book being used in a classroom for educational purposes while understanding that it is a work of fiction surrounding a real event.

Zusak, Markus. I am the messenger. Pan Macmillan, 2002.

The Messenger is a scavenger hunt of a novel surrounding the main character, Ed, a 19 year old taxi driver. Ed finds a strange message containing times and addresses. When Ed visits these addresses he meets several characters in interesting and hard situations which Ed tries to remedy. The book is a compelling adventure that deals with many very intense situations. Due to the intensity and subject matter of this book I find it to be more appropriate for high school students but not necessarily for education purposes.

Zusak, Markus. When dogs cry. Pan Macmillan, 2001.

When Dogs Cry is the third book in The Underdogs series which takes place in a blue-collar part of town in the outskirts of Sydney, Australia. The book surrounds the character Cameron as he falls in love with his older brother’s girlfriend. The book features conversations around family, violence, love, and could be considered a coming of age novel. This novel, alongside the other two books in the series are great for young adults, especially young men learning their way through the world. I do not find this book particularly educational or see it fitting in a classroom setting.
