Congress had tried to keep the sectional balance between Northern and Southern states. The balance had gotten more difficult to keep over time, given that the North had obtained the lead in the house of representatives. In the senate it had become 11v11 between free and slave states. Missouri ended up bidding for statehood as a slave state which started had brought troubles because it would give the southern states a lead in the senate. The missouri compromise was made by Henry Clay which had allowed Missouri to be a slave state but also let Maine as a free state to keep the balance and also stop slavery in the rest of the Louisiana area latitude 36 30. The significance of this was sectional balance but also disagreement on whether being loyal to the union or sectionalist.

Although The Era of Good Feeling was seen as a nationalistic time full of the pride in America, This was not truly an era of good feeling due to it's economic issues and political issues.

An example to support this is the Missouri Compromise, which had given a compromise between congress to continue its sectional balance between north and south by having Missouri be labeled a slave state and having Maine as a free state. This example helps prove my claim because Although it may seem as compromise between America while also building nationalism through agreement, There were disagreements later made on sectionalism and whether being loyal to the union or section.

Another example is the Panic of 1819. The panic of 1819 contradicts the perception of the nationalism americans had. The panic of 1819 was majorly faulted by the 2nd bank of the united states due to how it handled inflation and leading to a major economic disaster, causing debt, imprisonment from debt, unemployment and the shutting down of many state banks. This helps prove my claim because although the era of good feeling was seen as a prosperous time of america, there were contradictions from political and economical issues. Overall, the era of good feeling was not truly a era of good feeling due to the political and economic issues that played along that brought disaster to the american people during what is seen as a time of prosperity.
