The Missouri Compromise was an agreement made by Congress in 1820 to make the slave and free states equal. This made Missouri admitted to the Union as a slave state and Maine was added as a free state. They also drew an imaginary line at 36 deg.30' to ban slavery north of that line forever except Missouri.https://image.slidesharecdn.com/eventsleadinguptothecivilwar-111205220532-phpapp02/95/events-leading-up-to-the-civil-war-3-728.jpg?cb=1323123516

On January 20, 1850 Henry Clay, KY senator, had came up with another compromise to help with all of the disputes. This compromise was made after California wanted to join the Union. This is the results of the compromise: they admitted CA as a free state, they let Utah and NM territories decide if they wante slaves, it ended slave trade in Washington DC, but slaverholders could still keep the slaves that they have, and it also included a strong fugitive slave law which captured runaway slaves.
