The main technology I will be using for this assignment is padlet. The reason behind this is the collaborative nature of the technology in encouraging online discussions.

Part 2 a. What would you consider to be one of your strengths in teaching online? How do you plan on leveraging your strengths to maximize your students’ learning

I see my experience with multimedia as a strength that I can draw upon when I teach online. First, realizing that I must establish an online presence, I will use my multimedia expertise to create online videos that will serve as a means of material delivery, orientation for students, and sharing of essential details in regards to the course. Secondly, given that adult learners are more likely to choose online learning than face-to-face instruction based on learner demographics, my ability with multimedia will be useful in organizing content into more readable and visually appealing formats.

Part 2 b. As you completed this workshop, what surprised you the most about online teaching and learning?

One thing that surprised me or rather that was clear, is the need for course alignment in online courses. As much as one course might contain up to 13 modules as case for USIU-Africa, which vary in subject matter and course content per module. These modules are driven and aligned to general course objectives and learning outcomes which reflect throughout the course. For the learning objectives, the need to be measurable is key, this build on the mode of assessment and the level of assessment. Bloom Taxonomy is a wonderful guide in developing course learning outcomes, it ensures a shift from lower order thinking and higher order thinking.

Action plan: Asses the level of know-how on different instructional strategies to engage Online students among USIU-Africa’s Subject Matter Experts.

Implementation: To achieve this I will use Padlet, as a SME’s engagement tool. I will outline various engagement strategies such as Lecture Videos, Live Virtual Lectures, Discussion Forums, Quizzes and Assessments, Simulations and Virtual Labs. On the forum I will request SME’S to give an experience on each strategy, tool used and impediments.

This information will act as a guiding block in improving USIU-African Online experience and important data to Instructional designers and e-technologist on improving the online learning experience.

The second phase of this plan is to develop tailormade instructional materials touching on raised issues from the online discussion forum in padlet. This phase can employ online forum such as zoom, and Instructional screen recorded videos in panopto.

· Encountering padlet amongst other technology was an eye opener for me. The ability to have asynchronous/synchronous discussion is remarkable. The technology ability to offer variety of discussion in the simplest way made me appreciate the place of technology in modern learning. My learning process for this technology was flawless. The first step to learning a new platform is identifying the need at hand. The second part is identifying a number of software’s attached to the need at hand. I can easily go for open source software since even the learning curve is fast due to the majority of people using the software, YouTube is the best platform for visual based learning. After getting preliminaries information on using the software is doing a mockup practice project. The last step is joining a community attached to the software for continuous learning and growth.
