-- Why do you want to be a nurse? When did you decide you wanted to be a nurse? Did anyone or anything influence your decision?

I want to be a nurse because I have always admired the work nurses do to care for others. My mother is a nurse, and she has inspired me since I was a child. Watching her go to work every day with passion and dedication made me want to follow in her footsteps. She often told me stories about how rewarding it is to help people during difficult times, and that made me love this profession. I decided to study pediatric nursing because I love working with children and I want to help them feel safe and cared for when they are sick. I also had the opportunity to do an internship, which allowed me to see the reality of the job and confirmed that this is the right path for me. I know that nursing is a very demanding job, but I believe all the sacrifices will be worth it. Helping others is the greatest reward.

N: I understand. We’ll check how you’re doing. Did you sleep well?

M: She woke up once around 3 AM but then fell back asleep.

N: Thanks for letting me know. I’m going to give her the medicine the doctor prescribed.

P: Will it taste bad?

N: Actually, the doctor said it’s a very good one:it tastes like strawberries!

M: Oh! She’s allergic to strawberries!

N: Thank you for telling me! I’ll call the doctor right away to change it. It’s very important we avoid any allergic reactions.

How did you feel about your first rotation? What ward were you in?

My first rotation was in the neonatal semi-intensive care unit, where tiny patients require constant monitoring and delicate care. On my very first day, I felt extremely anxious:every monitor alarm made my heart race. Under the guidance of most of my tutors, I learned to give baths to newborns, feed them, rock them gently, and prepare their therapies step by step. I quickly memorized the names and uses of many medications as well as all the equipment in the ward. Most tutors were incredibly supportive, although one tutor did not follow me at all, and I felt abandoned. That difficult experience taught me resilience: I learned to move forward without letting criticism defeat me. When the four-week rotation ended, I was sad to leave the babies and the team, but also excited to see my friends again and finally rest after my long commute. I can’t wait to return and continue learning in neonatal care.

One hospital TV series I watched and really enjoyed is New Amsterdam. It is based on the real-life story of Dr. Eric Manheimer and follows Dr. Max Goodwin, the medical director of a large public hospital in New York. He arrives with a clear mission: to break bureaucracy and make healthcare more human. What I like most is how he always asks, “How can I help?”, showing that compassion and care must come before rules. The series shows many different departments, like oncology, emergency, cardiology, and psychiatry, so you learn a lot about how a hospital really works. It also focuses on the personal lives of the doctors and nurses, showing how emotional and stressful this job can be. I learned that teamwork, empathy, and communication are essential in this field. New Amsterdam motivated me to become the kind of nurse who truly listens to patients and always tries to make a difference.
