An early example is Themistocles, who (because his mother was a Thracian), could not use the major Athenian gymnasiums, but instead he had to attended the Gymnasium of Herakles, outside the city walls, reserved for aliens, but attended by many more after Themistocles went there.

(Interestingly, a major rival, Cimon, also had a Thracian mother, but being the son of a major leader, Miltiades, probably helped him be an insider. Being an outsider is a gift--but not every outsider accepts it.)
