The purpose of the poem is to give homage to William Shakespeare, and recognize his success both as a writer but also as a lover. Anne Hathaway does this by forming a coherent comparison between the drama and romance of his plays in relation to their sexual life, in their second best bed. She creates a juxtaposition between the excitment of her life with him, to their guests which in a way represent the average couple.

The purpose of the poem is to show the different times and hardships of a romanic relationship, more so the romance of the poem.

The poem also shares to the reader the special and unique love that they had and is evidently presented in the poem through various uses of imagery and symbolism such as the pearls and shooting stars.

It also shows the correlation between the stereotype and cliche of "love because of sex" or "love because of love".

The purpose of this poem is interpret Shakespeare's will as personal and meaningful compared to the heartless tone it is known to be. Anne Hathaway is also given a voice, (in relation to Duffy's overall theme in the World's wife) in order for her to portray their love as a one of a kind journey. It is also meant to signify his strong presence within her life, and her final commemorance of him.

The purpose of the poem is to bring to light historical women who were important in history, but were not as remembered. Not many knew about Anne Hathaway but she may have helped inspire Shakespeare in his work. This links to the theme of empowering women and 'reimagining' from the females perspective.
