He  was born in September 16, 1838 and died on May 29, 1916. James is from Ontario, Canada. James found his company in 1866, but he would soon helm the Great Northern Railway Company. Vanderbilt started as a passenger ferry business with one boat in the New York harbor. He started to own a steamship company then controlled Hudson River Traffic. Vanderbilt is also known as one of the America's leading business -men. He died in 1877.

He died on March 29, 1878, in Yuma, Arizona Territory.
