My perceptions on the elderly was learned by how I was taught and what I observed. Elders are to be respected and cared of. Growing up, my family constantly emphasized the significance of respecting and listening to grandparents and older relatives. Stories and daily habits in my family also showed that we should value older people.

The deep structure of my culture is a unique blend of traditional Chinese values, Korean heritage rediscovered, and the American influences from my mother's adoptive family. Both my mom and dad’s sides of the family prioritize harmony and the importance and significance of family. My Chinese background emphasizes respect, especially towards elders, and the importance of non-verbal cues in communication. My mom’s adoption by white parents has made our journey to understand our Korean heritage ongoing, fostering a natural curiosity and openness towards other cultures. Meanwhile, growing up in America has instilled in me values of individualism, a readiness to accept diverse perspectives, and a direct communication style.

Why do you think families in one form or another are found in every culture? And why do you think there are so many different forms of families?

Every culture has families because they are like the foundation of a building for society. People everywhere want to connect, help each other, and belong to a group. Families teach us our culture's stories, morals, and how to live. Different places and histories make families look different, and as cultures mix, the idea of family changes and grows.

Was competition or cooperation stressed?

Competition: For education and career, yes, competition is highly emphasized. Many Asian families really value academic excellence, and children are often encouraged/pushed to outperform others. I believe this push is mostly because of the cultural emphasis on success.

Cooperation: Within family and the community, cooperation is key. Families work together, live together, and help each other out. The concept of 'we' often takes over ‘I’ in family settings.
