The Articles of Confederation was the first written plan of government for the United States.
After the war against Great Britain had begun each separate state was like its own nation. All states had their own constitution and form of their own government. They felt as if each state was its own country. But they still needed a central form of government so they created the articles of confederation which created a weak central government giving most of the power to the states.

1.The colonists did not want a central government that would breach upon their rights, so they created a weak government.
2. They centralized the government around a weak legislative body, which they called the Confederation Congress.
3.Each individual state had its own currency because they were all essentially their own individual governments but they were still under the centralized goverment.
4. The government could not collect taxes from the states.
5. A total vote of thirteen states was needed to change the articles.

1. Since the colonists had created a weak central government the government failed.
2.They were given no authority over the states, the states were self governing so they had no control over trade or commerce so the states had to regulate their own trade.
3. States often had disputes over what value of money was worth in each of the individual states.
4. The government was not able to pay off their war debt of pay for any other need because there was no money.
5.Congress could not fix anything and continued to get worse.

Farmers started losing their farms since the banks were foreclosing on the farmers that couldn't pay their loans. Daniel Shay,a farmer, started a rebellion that marched to the foreclosure banks and shut them down. Shay's rebellion brought light to how bad the nation had become under the articles.
