World Read Aloud Day is celebrated on the first Wednesday in February and takes place on February 5 this year. This is a day dedicated not just to reading, but to the art and practice of reading aloud. Stories were passed down from generation to generation even before writing was invented. Oral forms of storytelling were the earliest way of preserving human knowledge, insight, and creativity. This day helps us bring this tradition back to reading while promoting literacy.

Reading aloud is often seen as something only young children do, but I believe it’s useful for people of all ages. Even though many prefer silent reading, I think reading aloud has several important benefits that shouldn’t be overlooked:

Improves pronunciation and fluency
When we read aloud, we practise saying words correctly and clearly. This is especially helpful for learning new words or speaking in a foreign language. As Jawaharlal Nehru said, “Success often comes to those who dare to act. It seldom goes to the timid who are ever afraid of the consequences.” We should all listen to these words and learn one more important thing - nothing will work without trying;

Strengthens comprehension
Reading aloud forces us to slow down and focus on the meaning of the text. It’s harder to skim or skip words, which means we understand the content better. I think this is really useful when studying complicated subjects;

Develops expressive reading skills
When we read aloud, we naturally add emotion and tone, making the text more interesting. This is a great skill for storytelling, presentations, or even acting. People are mostly guided by emotions rather than rational considerations, so reading aloud will help you understand people better;

Improves memory and concentration
Saying words out loud helps our brain remember information better. I’ve found that when I read my notes aloud, I memorise them much faster than when I just read them silently. It also keeps me more focused;

Builds confidence in public speaking
Many people are nervous about speaking in front of others, but reading aloud is a great way to practise. It helps us get used to hearing our own voice and improves our ability to speak clearly and confidently. I believe this is an essential skill for success in life.

Reading aloud in English is a highly beneficial practice for non-native speakers, offering numerous advantages that enhance language learning and proficiency.

Key Benefits of Reading Aloud

1. Improves Pronunciation and Fluency:

Reading aloud compels learners to articulate words accurately, fostering a more natural flow in speech and enhancing overall fluency. This practice helps identify and correct pronunciation issues by allowing learners to hear their own voice

2. Expands Vocabulary:

When reading aloud, learners encounter new words in context, which aids in understanding their meanings and usage. This exposure accelerates vocabulary growth and helps in retaining new terms more effectively compared to silent reading

3. Boosts Comprehension:

The act of reading aloud engages learners more actively with the text, improving their ability to focus on word choices and sentence structures. This heightened engagement leads to better comprehension of complex materials14.

4. Develops Listening Skills:

Reading aloud enhances listening abilities by attuning learners to the rhythm, intonation, and accents of native speakers. This skill is crucial for understanding spoken English in various contexts

5. Builds Confidence:

Practicing reading aloud in a supportive environment helps reduce anxiety about speaking a foreign language. As learners become more comfortable with pronunciation and expression, their confidence in communicating improves significantly

6. Reinforces Grammar and Sentence Structure:

Through reading aloud, learners internalize grammatical rules and sentence constructions, which aids in both spoken and written communication

In summary, reading aloud is an effective strategy for non-native English speakers that not only enhances their linguistic skills but also boosts their confidence in using the language actively.
