Return to the "Reflection on an AI Tool" activity we included in the Fundamentals topic. Revisit the tool you explored, but this time think less about how you could use the tool to teach and and instead consider how the tool could help you teach your students about generative AI. Consider the following:

Does the tool raise any ethical concerns?

How was the tool created? Was anyone harmed in that creation?

What kind of generated content does the tool provide? Does it seem accurate. If not, why might that be?

Review the terms of service for the tool; is there anything there that gives you pause?

How is using the tool like collaborating with a person? How is it different?

Share your reflection on the padlet we've set up.

The tool I explored was Copilot, and since the Fundamentals reflection I experimented with it to create a chatbot.

Does the tool raise any ethical concerns?

Yes - if I create a chatbot and train it using common student questions, it's possible / likely that it will use that and other information to commercialize the information it receives. What is a local solution for me, might become part of a larger pool of data with unintended downstream impacts.

How was the tool created? Was anyone harmed in that creation?

MS created it based on earlier large language models. It's completely possible that along the way, in order to align the earlier LLMs the service is based on, people were hurt either because of environmental, economic, or ideological impacts.

What kind of generated content does the tool provide? Does it seem accurate. If not, why might that be?

Although it seems slightly more accurate than other models, on advantage is that it at least appears to cite its sources, which can help with analysis.

Review the terms of service for the tool; is there anything there that gives you pause?

Yes. Although it says it does not claim ownership,, it explicitly states that by using it anything submitted can be used for business purposes across all MS Services and gives it license rights to reconfigure and repackage it however it likes, without compensation. It also says "You warrant and represent that you own or otherwise control all of the rights to your content as described in these Terms including, without limitation, all the rights necessary for you to provide, post, upload, input or submit the content." so... if you copy and paste another person's work to get a summary, what does that mean?

How is using the tool like collaborating with a person? How is it different?

It's similar in that it is conversational. It's different in that it doesn't have passion, feelings, a lived experience, imagination, curiosity, or a desire to belong.
