Kevin Parker’s music influenced me into creating and recording more instrument focused music using synths, outboard gear and a variety of guitar effects/pedals. His songs have also influenced me in how I mix my music. Unconventional techniques such as drenching vocals in reverb or using a 57 on a kick drum encourage me to think outside of the box and be more creative when making music (Venutti, I. (2023, April 28).

Justin Vernon

Justin Vernon’s experimental blend of acoustic folk and modern production techniques such as using autotune and the Prismizer effect to achieve synthesized harmony has influenced me in how I perceive genre conventions and how you can draw from multiple different genres to create new things. Vernon’s creative use of sampling is also a major inspiration for my own music.

The Flaming Lips

Kevin Parker has described The Flaming Lips as being “hugely influential” (Know, T. (2013, October 24) to the Tame Impala sound, inspiring the explosive, space rock feeling in his own music. Parker notes that in the song, ‘Race for the Prize’, the drum performance really influenced the way he played drums in his second album ‘Lonerism’. The “bombastic but emotive” playing as well as the saturated and blown out sound played a major role in how Parker’s drums were recorded and mixed in future projects (Pitchfork. (2020).

Supertramp

Supertramp has strongly influenced Kevin Parker in his music. In an interview written by David Marchese, Parker stated that The explosive quality and big sound along with introspective lyrics in Supertramps music is important to him (Marchese, D. (2012, August 9). Comparisons can be made between the Supertramp song ‘The Logical Song’ and Tame Impala’s ‘It Might Be Time’’. The both songs begin with a Wurlitzer playing a staccato rhythm, the same chord repeats for 4 bars before changing chords. The bass line in both songs also shares similarities in the riff it plays at the end of each bar.

My Bloody Valentine

My Bloody Valentine can be heard in Kevin Parker’s music, particularly his guitar playing and processing. The wall of sound achieved in My Bloody Valentine’s music can be heard throughout Parker’s earlier music, where distorted, shoegaze tone can be heard in the guitars and dreamy vocals drenched in reverb tucked underneath the mix (Weiss, 2010).

John Prine

John Prine’s guitar playing, particularly the finger picking, where the bass, chord and melody are simultaneously played. This can be heard in Justin Vernon’s earlier country folk inspired music, such as in the ‘Frail Sail’ by Vernon, which through my listening shares similar qualities to John Prine’s ‘In Spite of Ourselves’. Justin Vernon may have developed his guitar playing style through Prine’s fingerpicking techniques.

Bob Dylan

Justin Vernon has stated Bob Dylan as one of his favourite songwriters, this influence is clearly heard in Vernon’s music, as both artists include deep storytelling in their lyrics and complex melodic and rhythmic decisions in their instrumentation. Vernon’s cryptic yet story driven lyrics are reminiscent of Bob Dylan’s storytelling (Harbron, L. (2023).

Kanye West

Kanye West’s influence can be most heard on Vernon’s albums ‘22, A Million’ and ‘i,i’. After originally being sampled by West and aiding him create some of his most experimental albums, Vernon’s music has greatly shifted in including many of the aspects West’s music strongly contained, such as, sampling and chopping the human voice and using heavy autotune (Furtado, F [Middle 8]. (2018, June 1). Vernon’s acoustic folk instrumentation in combination with heavily autotuned vocals in order to convey emotion is heavily reminiscent of Kanye’s ‘808s and Heartbreak’, ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’ and ‘Yeezus’ (Romano, E. 2016).
