Reality therapy, developed by William Glasser, emphasizes personal responsibility and the power of choice. It challenges us to focus on the present and ask, "Are my current actions helping me meet my needs and achieve my goals?" By addressing how our behavior impacts our sense of belonging, achievement, and freedom, it encourages honest self-evaluation and purposeful change.

Reflecting on this, it’s a reminder that while we can’t control everything, we always have control over our choices. We are the ones responsible and accountable for every action we take and every decision we make.

This gives me the insight that we have the freedom to choose: to either remain stuck in that phase and cling to old habits, or step out of our comfort zone to confront our fears, triggers, and struggles. By doing so, we can introduce ourselves to a healthier way of living and adopt a new approach to life—one that helps us grow and live better than we did yesterday.

- JKU

For me, the choices we make have a big impact on our lives. That’s why it’s so important to take responsibility for the decisions we make. Looking at Jewel’s struggle with studying, it shows how important it is to be aware of what we’re doing and to set realistic expectations for the results. This helps us avoid too much disappointment and face challenges with a clearer mind. Being accountable is also important, when we accept the results of our choices, whether good or bad, we give ourselves the chance to learn, grow, and make better decisions next time. Making better choices leads to greater happiness overall.

Reality therapy, in my opinion, is a useful and empowering strategy since it emphasizes our decisions and the accountability that it comes with. Instead than focusing on the past or placing the blame on others, it encourages people to take charge of their present situations. It helps people in changing their lives for the better by focusing on themselves, and attainable, well-defined goals. All things considered, it provides a practical way ahead, establishing a nurturing atmosphere that encourages development and transformation.

It teaches us that while we cannot always control the things that happens around us, we have the power to control our responses and behaviors.

The part of the report that stands out to me the most is the line, “THE ONLY PERSON YOU CAN CONTROL IS YOURSELF." This line is simple but quite powerful. It's a reminder for us to take charge of our own lives. What we think, how we act, and the decisions we make are in our own hands. This means we are responsible for the choices we make and the way we respond to situations.

By focusing on what we can control, we can shift negative thoughts about ourselves into healthier and more positive ones. Taking control of our thoughts and actions helps us live better and move closer to our goals. It also allows us to handle challenges with a clear and focused mind.

This teaches us not to waste energy on the things we cannot control and change but to focus on improving ourselves. When we take healthy control of our lives, we can grow, make better decisions, and live in a way that aligns with what truly matters to us.

For each part of the presentation, there are highlights that resonated with me.

In the introductory discussion, Psychiatry's Three Rs sticks to me. This made me reflect on past experiences and how I shall apply these. For instance, I had an old habit of overthinking to the point I was not able to take action. In Realism, I understood that this is indeed a problem and it is not something that can be resolved in a span of a day. Therefore, I have to take Responsibility of the consequences, such as not getting any work done. Lastly, the right action is to find ways to lessen the self-destructive consequences of overthinking and focus on methods that promotes personal growth instead.

Next, for the first part of core ideas, the use of a situational example to outline the choice pathway of an individual is indeed commendable. I once again reflected on my dilemmas, past or present, in place of the example's situation. Another key point in this part of the discussion is the 4 aspects of choice theory, utilizing a car as a representation. Each part of the car: the engine, front wheels, and back wheels, have their own roles that influence the totality of the behavior. Once again, this part is well explained.

For the second half of core ideas, the discussion of control is the highlight. It eventually made me realize how powerful control is to an individual. A proper use of control that focuses on promoting respect and authenticity to oneself and others is a path towards positive growth. Conversely, the misuse of it almost turn it upside down, leading to alienation, frustration, and pain. It emphasizes how a false sense of control, where they may believe the are above all, is an illusion that eventually leads to an individual's "downfall."

Moving on to the process section, the additional discussion of WDEP System is a good supporting information that contributed to clarifying of the procedures of Reality Therapy. Additionally, this process emphasizes how important it is for plans to be followed by an action. A plan is only the first step, no discernable or visible change or action are made yet. It'll become null if it remained that way. A plan without action is a goal without effect.

In the final part of the report, the highlight for me are the criticisms as some of the points mentioned are similar to some of my personal criticisms towards Reality therapy. One of the criticisms is the too much focus on the present. According to the core idea, the past is "not the cause of issues but the source of current wants and needs." I partly disagree with this because I believe that past still has it's influence to one's issues. It is true that past is not entirely the cause of issues, but it still has it's part in it. I think that instead of past not being the cause of issues, it is ONE of the causes. (This is only a personal criticism.)

-Ayanna Marie R. Mendoza

Reality Therapy is something that caught my attention. It's about taking control of your life and making good choices. I have this experience where I used to have a problem with putting things off, like studying for tests. It made me stressed and I didn't get good grades. Then, upon studying the Reality Therapy maybe I could apply it by knowing how to break things down into smaller steps. I thought about what I wanted which is good grades and less stress. Then maybe soon I will start studying in smaller parts with breaks. I hope it become easier, and it works. I realized that doing little things every day will help me get better. I hope Reality Therapy will givee me the tools and confidence to make good changes in my life.

Reading Jewel's story hit close to home because I tend to do the same thing—make excuses to avoid going out of my comfort zone. I’d tell myself things like, “It’s not the right time,” or “What if it doesn’t work out?” but in the end, those excuses just keep me stuck. Nothing changes, and I’m not moving forward.

It made me realize that we have to take control of our lives. We can’t just sit back and wait for things to magically happen overnight. We need to be the ones driving the wheel, making choices, and taking responsibility for our actions. It might be scary and uncomfortable, but if we don’t try taking action, we’re just holding ourselves back. This opened my eyes to how much I’ve been holding back because of my own fears or doubts. If we want to create the life I want, we should stop letting excuses control us but rather start with small steps. These little changes can make a big difference if I keep at it.

Reality therapy helps us focus on what we can control instead of getting stuck in excuses or blaming circumstances. The idea that we are responsible for our own choices hits hard—it’s empowering, but also challenging because it means there’s no one else to blame if we don’t take action. We all have the power to make things happen, but it starts with us deciding to take that first step.

Her experience is too familiar, but I certainly learned from her. From Jewel’s experience, I learned that avoiding responsibilities only makes things harder in the end. Her struggle showed me how important it is to take control of our choices instead of waiting for problems to fix themselves. Her experience taught me that finding balance, like mixing work with fun, can make tasks feel less overwhelming. I also realized that making small, positive changes and taking responsibility, even little by little, leads to better outcomes and personal growth. Her story reminded me that progress starts with owning our actions and making the effort to improve.

-ART

Reality therapy taught me a profound truth: we are not powerless. At its core, it’s about making better choices, taking responsibility, and living in alignment with reality and values. This approach doesn’t dwell on symptoms or labels but focuses on the individual’s potential to change.

The principles of realism, responsibility, and right-and-wrong struck me deeply. Realism reminds us to work with what is, not what we wish for. Responsibility challenges us to own our actions, empowering us to become the authors of our stories. Right-and-wrong isn’t about rigid morals but about aligning choices with what truly serves us and others.

What moved me most was its belief in personal agency. Even in the face of challenges, we can respond, act, and choose. Life isn’t just something that happens to us—we have the power to shape it. Reality therapy doesn’t just shift how we solve problems; it redefines how we see ourselves. It’s a reminder that, no matter our circumstances, we are capable of living with purpose and control.

-Sean

Reality Therapy focuses on personal responsibility and making choices that align with our true needs. One key takeaway that stood out to me is the idea that we can't change the past, but we can take control of our present and future by making better choices. This concept is empowering because it emphasizes that we are not victims of our circumstances, but active participants in shaping our lives. It gives us the power to change what’s in our control, making us more accountable for our actions and decisions.

Another takeaway is the importance of relationships in the therapy process. Reality Therapy stresses that we are social beings with a basic need for connection. This stood out because it highlights that our well-being is deeply tied to the quality of our relationships. The therapy encourages building stronger, healthier connections with others, which can help us feel more supported and understood. In this way, it feels both practical and deeply human, offering a pathway to personal growth that is rooted in connection.

Reality therapy resonates with many people because it emphasizes personal responsibility and the power of choice in shaping our lives. For example, when faced with overwhelming challenges, instead of feeling defeated, we can proactively create a plan or seek support from others. This approach empowers us to take charge of our situations and fosters a sense of control.

Additionally, reality therapy encourages us to embrace the present moment rather than being consumed by regrets or anxieties. By focusing on what we can do now, we learn to make choices that bring us closer to our goals and improve our quality of life. Recognizing our fundamental needs for connection, fulfillment, and enjoyment helps us prioritize what truly matters. Ultimately, reality therapy inspires individuals to align their decisions with their values and aspirations, reminding us that meaningful change is always within our reach through conscious and intentional actions.
