CLICK THE THREE HORIZONTAL DOTS TO THE RIGHT OF THIS SCREEN > CLICK ENTER FULL SCREEN TO ADD/SEE COMMENTS.
In this activity, analyze the Cavendish article from yesterday that draws parallels between the cancel culture of recent years and the hysteria Arthur Miller found himself living in and writing about. Through this, you should be able to thoughtfully make comparisons across time periods. Additionally, you should be able to analyze the impact of mob mentality on various cultures.

It should become clear, through reading your response, whether you defend, challenge, or qualify views from (Cavendish) "The Crucible: The Play That Warned Us About Cancel Culture". Write your response for each question in the columns below and please take care to submit your own responses and not simply duplicate what you see other students writing. YOU SHOULD RESPOND TO SOMEONE YOU AGREE WITH AND QUESTION SOMEONE YOU DISAGREE WITH! ONLY 2 REPLIES ARE NECESSARY FOR THE ENTIRE PADLET BUT YOU MAY DO MORE.

It's like trying to compare a paper cut to the Holocaust. As the article itself addresses, the political ramifications of both the Salem Witch Trials and McCarthyism in comparison to modern-day cancel culture are, first of all, switched. The first two events refer to conservatism as the aggressor and progress as the victim of the situation. In the Salem Witch Trials, religious fanatics clung to their faith rather than making the logical jump to reasoning, with disastrous consequences. In the Second Red Scare, insecure capitalists railed against Communism and villainized it in an attempt to protect their own empires. Conversely, cancel culture is an instance of progress being made in spite of racists, misogynists, and any others who refuse to get with the times. The reactionary backlash against cancel culture is both overinflated and a desperate attempt of the rich, white, and powerful to remain so rather than to acknowledge the changing nature of society and its move toward acceptance. Is cancel culture the absolutely right answer? No, but it is well-intentioned, and its detractors are being blown way out of proportion in the hopes of turning progressivists against themselves.

It is reasonable to correlate the attitude of today's cancel culture to being a reflection of past times such as those. Cancel culture, much like the trials, are a subsequent of often mistaken dialect that turns into a mass execution of the individual's character.

To compare today's cancel culture to the Salem witch trials or even the McCarthy hearings would an inaccurate representation of current society. The red scare and witch hunts occurred out of a necessity of religious and political dominance. Cancel culture in the modern age was born out of a need for social justice, however it still often follows a similar mob mentality, especially when taken advantage of through mediums such as social media.

Cancel culture has been blown way out of proportion. It is neither incredibly effective, nor is it superbly damaging. Cancel culture, while a fair and more than understandable sentiment, can even be stated to never have truly existed in the context that it was meant for. It is impossible to actually "cancel" someone in power because, while that person may suffer diminished attention and the loss of further jobs, they also can rely on diehard fans and royalties from previous work, especially since the vast majority of cancelled people are celebrities. Cancel culture also fails to address the deeper systemic issues that allow people like that to come to prominence in modern society at all, such as Eurocentric beauty standards, racism and sexism in Hollywood, and overall lack of accountability for the rich. But while cancel culture is not extraordinarily a good thing, it is also not squarely an awful thing either. People who feel threatened by cancel culture respond by railing against the practice itself and playing victim when they are squarely at fault. It more often than not barely even affects them and even affords them free publicity. They will usually always be able to find work, rely on old money, and keep their mansions, servants, and expensive clothes. Does cancel culture have the potential to spiral out of control? Of course, as do all things, but it's an overinflated risk, and any resistance against it only serves to distract from the fact that things like racism and misogyny still run rampant. The rich cry victim, while the poor and nonwhite continue to be victims.

Cancel culture is an overall corrosive counterpart that society has chosen to actively follow through in for the smallest "incidents". Not only does it provide a cancellation of character, it also exiles any possible growth as a people for real change.

Overall, I believe that cancel culture has put a hole in our society that can sometimes be unjust. Many people (not just celebrities or influencers) are loosing their jobs because of cancel culture. People are taking their anger out on something that someone did decades ago, and end up making them loose their job and all of their credibility. This is very dangerous to our society because big name people like J.K. Rowling. She was involved in cancel culture when she sent out a tweet arguing against getting someone fired because they believed that sex was a thing. She was then quickly labeled as transphobic, and was "canceled."

Specifically, Miller is referring to the demonization of Communism that seized the entirety of the country. Generally, he is referring to mob mentality.

When used against an innocent group of people, it absolutely has the right to destroy a country or at least annihilate its integrity. The nationwide hate of Asians following the bombing of Pearl Harbor and their internment proves that. The rampant Islamophobia following 9/11 and continuing on to the present day proves that. Whenever a country faces a moment of crisis, it can be reasonably depended on that it will always turn on its minorities. When the Cold War happened, Communism was condemned, and any sympathizers were mildly persecuted, though it was hugely insensitive of Miller to equate that with the actual deaths of the Salem Witch Trials. However, this is not the case in modern society. One singular group of people is not coming under fire innocuously but rather an institution of expected and wrongly accepted ideals and behaviors. People are trying to institute accountability among the powerful, and trying to defend them is like getting upset over a tax increase that will only affect people who make over $400,000 and profit off of your suffering.

Arthur Miller, the self-proclaimed martyr

Miller is trying to argue that paranoia lies in wait, patiently searching for a moment of widespread unrest, when it can spread its wings and take control. Usually, this paranoia manifests itself in the persecution of a group of people who have, in reality, done nothing wrong. This was the case in the Salem Witch Trials, in which neighbors turned against each other and used the crisis as an excuse to gain property and exact revenge. It could also be applied, in lesser extent, to the McCarthy hearings, as being a Communist in itself is not a crime but was treated as one. However, Miller is very obviously a biased source, and I disagree with his decision to try to self-insert himself as the protagonist in a Salem Witch scenario at all. He was a man upset by comparatively mild inconveniences who decided to make himself feel holier-than-thou by crafting a play in which he was the martyred hero and virtually everyone else was a villain out to get him. The Crucible is one man's ham-fisted attempt to rail out against the unfairness of the world and paint himself as the victim, from his rich home and beautiful, supportive wife. Paranoia might be an ever-present danger, but, in my opinion, giving victim mentality such a platform, in cases of Miller and modern-day cancel culture, is the worse transgressor by far.

Miller is referring to the fear of communism itself as well as the "canceling" of people at the time due to the fear that they could be communist. Logically, this put the entire nation into a panic, leadinging to many people being put in jail on a whim (hints the ties with the salem witch trials). If this were to have continued, the inevitable idea of there "maybe being communists in government positions" would have broken down the nation.

The grow of fear of loss is the main enemy in these three situations. In the Salem Witch Trials, they were afraid to loose the people around them and this inner fear is what accused so many people over nothing. The red scare was the fear of loosing their country to communism, which also led to random accusations. Cancel Culture however, is the fear on many things including freedom, rights, adn equality. Many people have simply stated their opinion on the matter and have lost everything. Some of these people stated their opion 30 years prior, which was plenty of time to change their point of view, but because they had that opinion in the first place is what got them canceled.

Miller is referring to the efforts of the Red Scare, in terms of the effort to alienate communism from the U.S, as well as this accusatory ideology as a whole. Mob Mentality does have the ability to destroy our country, which we have seen today through the rise of Asian hate crimes, following the former President's derogatory rhetoric. It may also form a united front, though, when people rally together to fight a current issue and make change happen. The issue is not mob mentality itself, it's that people are on such different sides and are failing to reach one another.

Miller's sentiment proclaims that there is always a threat, something lurking. A gift that keeps on giving, if you will. In reference to the Salem Witch trials, we see the "enemy" as Abigail, who has accused so many people of Witchcraft. Clearly, those accusations were born out of greed, hatred, and power. In the McCarthy hearings, the first 'enemy' was Communism. Then, it no longer matter if you were communist, but if you were associated with someone else who was communist, and on and on and on. These are both examples of how these threats become more powerful over time, but, again, they fail to acknowledge the good that stems from pushing and branding together for change.

No, we cannot make the mistake to say those distinct events mirror todays cancel culture. The behaviors in the Salem Witch trials were the result of faith clouding reality, something todays cancel culture actively propels against. There is a reason for separation of Church and State. McCarthyism had a biased and blatant contempt for communism, and the government used its power to alienate anyone who was communist. Contrary to popular belief, Cancel culture is not about exposing people for the sake of a small disagreement, but its an attempt to raise voices and issue accountability. The way people have attempted to weaponize cancel culture is why people feel the need to compare it to the Salem Witch Trials, when really, we should be examining the deeper meaning behind it.

The quote, "the enemy is within" refers to the people being they're own problem instead of, in the case of the Salem Witch Trials, the devil. This is true because the devil, a religious character, isn't who caused the hangings that followed the Salem Witch Trials, but instead the mass hysteria and cancel culture of the time. Another example of this quote being true is the McCarthy hearings because these hearings were based off of assumptions made by other people and HUAC. This shows that although Communism was a threat to American democratic ideals, the true problem was how this communist infiltration was handled, which was poorly.

It isn't a valid comparison when comparing modern day cancel culture to the past behaviors, because these past behaviors were more focused on less evidence and more mass hysteria, like where a single accusation with no evidence could lead to a hanging. On the other hand, modern day cancel culture usually has more justification to it, because it is attached with a source of evidence. Overall, the comparison cannot be made, due to one being based on evidence, and the other based on near pure speculation.

Cancel culture is a great idea in theory. However, in practice it is a raging storm of emotions. Targeting people for statements made is years past is useless. Especially is they are remorseful now. Cancel cultures original purpose was to weed out all the bad apples in society and make a place where everyone who is afraid of showing their colors can be accepted. It seems that this goal is now lost. People bring up irrelevant quotes, actions and decisions to build up their argument against why someone is a horrible person and it unfortunately works. The people who are active in the cancel culture often fail to realize that people can grow. They can let go of their past ideas and grow as humans yet they always seem to be cut short because people can't acknowledge when someone is choosing to be a better person.

With paranoia comes gullible people, which in turn comes those who can benefit. While society may have advanced technologically, we are still animals at heart. That's why we are our own worst enemy. During the Salem witch trials, neighbors accused each other for their own gain. Whether it be for property, over a grudge or just selfish interest, the outcome is all the same. Since people were gullible due to their fear, anyone who cried out against a witch would win. There were plenty of people who knew that and took advantage of this. The Red Scare lied within a similar vein. Not necessarily the backstabbing of neighbors but the paranoia. Supporting Communism was treated as mutiny and a crime even though the supporters broke no laws. Our unapologetic bashing of those who oppose the majority is a prime example of shooting ourselves in out own foot. Unnecessary aggression will only fuel the fire of hate and help stir the cauldron of those with bigger plans.

The whole purpose of cancel culture is to give a voice to those who are oppressed and tired of their said oppression. While it is not being executed perfectly, the intentions are still there. The whole reason behind the Salem Witch Trials was due to faith and subjective ideas. Cancel culture is strictly against that. In fact, it could be said that religious ideas are the direct enemy of cancel culture. Cancel culture and the Salem Witch Trials hardly parallel each other. Theocracy ruled over Salem and objective thinking runs cancel culture.

The concept behind starting cancel culture, seeking justice, had potential but our society was too immature. They decided to completely change the meaning of cancel culture and turn it into hate. Much like this communism scare, today people blacklist each other because of their opposing views. But people are also cancelled because of the actions and words that have offended people. Like the people accused of communism, people on social media plead for their social lives in an online trial. Although this does have a huge impact on our society, I don't think that this "cancel culture" has the potential to ruin our country much like the communist scare almost did. "Cancel culture" is something that can be resolved, and when used in the right ways, can help our country come together and be more understanding of one another.

When Miller stated that quote she was referring to the communism that was going on in that time. This correlates to the "cancel culture" nowadays. When in the times of communism people would be blacklisted, shamed and driven out of town. All of this happened because some townspeople decided to be on board with communism. The town itself didn't accept that in any way. In Salem we noticed that the town itself is a christian town, they didn't accept any devil activity. "Cancel culture" doesn't have the potential of ruining the country because it can't go to such extent of being taken out completely. If that were the case many celebrities would have been exiled already. This new trend can be fixed but it will take for all the people on social media to come together and fix it.

For this trial specifically, the claims put against these people were unimaginable and should have not even been a question unless actual evidence had come up proving so.

In the Salem witch trials, people were afraid of others working with the devil. This caused mass hysteria and false accusations for revenge. The McCarthy hearings were caused by fear of communism and hatred towards communist because people thought they were a threat to the U.S. Todays cancel culture ideals are mainly caused by hate. People let out their anger by attacking celebrities for disagreements, which was seen in all three time periods.

In the Salem Witch Trials, people accused each other in order to pin the blame on someone else to avoid persecution of themselves and to get revenge on their enemies. The "enemy" that Miller is speaking about is also found in the McCarthy hearings. Where people accused one another of being a communist as a way to destroy each other's careers. These two time periods show how serious and sometimes false accusations can ruin someone's life. This constant worry about wether or not you were next to be accused lead people to accuse other people. But in today's society, people are not looking to exact revenge on people and are not accusing someone of having a different belief system. Today, people are "cancelled" for their offensive actions and comments against a group of people or cause. And the replications for being "cancelled" are far smaller than being tried in court or being hung.

We are introduced to the character of Abigail Williams and her vindictive ways of convincing the court that anyone but her is guilty of witchcraft. This stems from the main conflict that begins the play where she was caught in the woods "casting a spell" on Elizabeth Proctor, John Proctor's (Abigail's love interest) wife. Here, she is in control of the succeeding events for the people accused. Also in the McCarthy hearings, we can see both the government and the people they have gotten to confess both resort to manipulative ways in order to get what they want, both for different reasons. While one is trying to save themselves, the other is on a manhunt for people who have not been proven to be a threat. Making it very hard to believe they are doing this for a good reason.

Cancel culture primarily stays on the media and is now mainly immature kids blowing things out of proportion. The Salem witch trials and McCarthyism were much more serious. People were being killed for false accusations, their lives were threatened.

The everyday lives of a middle aged man and a man of this century are QUITE different in all aspects of life. In the past, one might of been hanged for doing something as "controversial" as saying a mean thing to another and/or speaking one's opinion. Today, we are allowed to get away with those things and sometimes even look good for doing it. The "cancel culture" of today's society is heavily reliant on social media, calling out people of topics of opinions, moral standpoints, and even debating on what things they think are the best when speaking of specific topic; such as their favorite songs by a specific artist. All and all, these two topics are not well enough alike to be compared for any good reason. The "cancelling" of the past had contrasting resolutions that cannot be put against each other in mindset; given people had different views and different social rules back then.

Both of these instances were caused out of fear of being accused themselves, and also to get revenge on their enemies. Their harmful actions can target specific groups of people based on race, gender or anything else. through canceling someone its possible to get rid of them entirely, because its clear to see why people wouldn't want to support bad people. times this has worked is with the controversy over arctic fox hair dye, since people don't like racism or homophobia its clear to see why you wouldn't want to support someone who does that, another is rip n dip, it should be clear you wouldn't want to support an abuser. cancel culture made these problems apparent. of course there are things that drive away from the narrative or common goal such as skye jackson's cancelation of two minors over a meme, but we shouldn't let a few bad times outweigh the good that its trying to achieve.

The witch Trials killed people..literally. The new "cancel culture" doesn't include the whole "town," it includes the people who decide to join it. We as the new generation have a complete new mindset than what the mindset was before. I guess you can say our mindset has adapted to our everyday lifestyle; modernized. All the new movements that had happened this last year were done "respectfully." Many did care about the ones around you and making sure they didn't get hurt. In the Witch Trials many people jus exposed one another in the blink of an eye, this was a matter of life or death, they most definitely were a more "colder" generation then.

Although bringing to light the sensitive topics that people have made offensive remarks, there is also toxicity to it. For example Paw Patrol was almost cancelled due to the fact that the show included dogs where their jobs were first responders. The problem was that people were cancelling the harmless show only because it included the police. The thing with cancel culture is that once someone does it, then everyone follows suit, almost a domino effect. Cancel culture has also become the source of humor and fun for people, yet when you're the one being cancelled it can have a huge negative impact on you.
Amy Najera Demoraes

There are two things to take into account, one is that the Salem Witch Trials are more extreme than cancel culture is and two is that the SWT and the MH share a similar basis where cancel culture has a completely different one. The Salem Witch Trials and the McCarthy Hearings are both similar due to the fact that they are centered around the idea of accusations. During the Salem Witch Trials people were accusing others that they were evil or that they were a witch. Even though no one was truly a witch, people still believed it because it seemed like the truth to them. Around the time of the McCarthy Hearings, the Red Scare was occurring making people very paranoid that someone was a communist. People were accusing others that they were a communist, and if others believed it too then they would have to go to a hearing to make sure that they weren't. Cancel culture is different because it blames people for what they've done or said that made others offensive. The SWT and the MH harms themselves more than others, while cancel culture harms more others than it does themselves. The thing with cancel culture is that after a while of something or someone being cancelled they are often put to the side and not held accountable because there's so many things that are being cancelled.

The effect of cancel culture on society is nothing short of dangerous. The way that people will search for reasons to be angry, or conduct deep dives on the internet in hopes of stumbling upon something mildly offensive is harmful to not only themselves, but those they are trying to persecute. A joke or an offhand comment made in a social media post 9 years ago may have no correlation to the views held by a person at present-day. It is not worth taking matters into your own hands and trying to destroy someone's professional and social life over a statement you disagree with. The over-exaggeration of those claiming to be offended has turned calling people out on their mistakes and seeking repentance into a witch hunt with no mercy. People are allowed to have different viewpoints, that's what makes America a democracy. Just because you disagree with someone's politics does not mean you have any right to ruin them for it. And on the off chance that someone has done something morally wrong or insensitive, slandering them and blacklisting them is not the answer. If society jumps to conclusion, the offender has no opportunity for growth or reconciliation, and will forever be labeled by their past mistakes. Cancel culture creates oppression within one's errors.

I think Cancel Culture does way more harm than good. It's realistically created a cesspool of toxicity and hate that no one is immune from or can fully overcome. Instead of properly "canceling" people that have done atrocious things, cancel culture targets celebrities for minor mistakes and unpopular views. The amount of people that are canceled for an old tweet or something they said when they were a teenager is just ridiculous. People are too quick to pull the trigger on such insignificant things without taking into account the time period in which that person said what they did. Cancel culture doesn't even really have an aim, because even when the accused apologize for their actions, it's never good enough. It's literally just an excuse to facilitate toxicity and hate within our society.

Miller was referring to the hysteria of McCarthyism and Joseph McCarthy's hearings. I don't believe it had or has the ability to disintegrate our country though. McCarthy lost a lot of his support after Truman left office so I think it was only a matter of time before society recognized that his reign had to come to an end. Despite the hysteria and fear, the core base of it all was preserving a free capitalist nation so even if it continued, it wouldn't have ever disintegrated the basis of the country's ideals. When you look at the cancel culture of today, it usually never goes further than social media or affecting celebrities for a short period of time before it's eventually forgotten. It holds a lot less significance today and a lot less impact. It definitely has no shot of disintegrating our country.

Arthur Miller's statement that "the enemy is within" is ultimately true and always has been. During the Salem Witch Trials, there was never any proof of actual witchcraft, it was all just based on allegations within their own community. The people in Salem were accusing each other for things they didn't like and ignoring their own mistakes and flaws in the process. There was no outside force acting on the girls, it was just hatred and fear within their own community. We see the same thing today. People are constantly cancelling each other for mistakes they've likely made themselves. Our own society has created and continues to facilitate this culture in which we tear each other apart. We are our own problem, there is no outside factor influencing this pattern, it's just us. Back in Salem and even today, we are our own problem, our habits, our judgement, our hatred. It was their actions back then and its our actions today.

Before I decide whether "cancel culture" is beneficial or dangerous to our society, I want to define this term first. Cancel Culture: to shame a person publically. There are many definitions for this, but I feel this one, in a way, covers them all. So is this beneficial or harmful to our society? Well, I believe it's neither healthy nor unhealthy for our community. Publicly shaming a person in my mind isn't the correct way to address a person based on what they have said on the web or social media, or wherever they might have posted their "idiotic" comment over a delicate subject, especially if this comment was a decade ago. Just imagine going after someone ten years later over a Twitter comment. That's an epic joke! Many people argue that the consequences that follow after being "canceled" cause them to lose their jobs or, worst, their social status. But from what I can see, those that are being publicly shamed are the rich and famous, which have plenty of money to pass down to their grandchildren. JK Rowling is the perfect example of this. She was "canceled culture" but has a net worth of a billion dollars. "Like yeah, sure, good job for exposing her a decade later; this makes the world a better place." This was me being sarcastic. Instead of going after people over something they've said, it's much better to focus on making our society a truly better place.

Millers, "This" in the quote is referring to Communism within the United States. This ideological belief did not necessarily threaten the ability to disintegrate the U.S., but rather it was the government officials and the Americans. The reason why I say Communism cannot destroy our country is because it's an idea. This idea led to the creation of mass Hysteria with the people. It's the people that have the ability to destroy our democracy, especially government officials, as they have power. McCarthyism only elevated the possibility to destroy our country as false accusations were being made with little evidence leading to the imprisonment and death of innocent people, who were stripped away from their freedoms.

When the article quotes Miller, "The enemy is within," this is true when applied to the Salem Witch Trials and McCarthyism. When it comes to the Salem Witch Trials, the "enemy within" is the people in this community. They are the true enemies, as, within the play, the majority of them turn against one another and, in some cases, do so to gain land. When asked if they are found guilty or not, they plead that they are to avoid punishment, even though they are innocent. This shows that really the people are cowards as it's within them to make the decision, but chose poorly to avoid punishment. They are the only ones who can come about change but do not because of fear, significantly hurting their society's future. During McCarthyism, the enemy again was the people, not Communism. Communism contributed to the rise of hysteria during this time period in the 1950s and was the "outsider". The enemies "within" are those that feared punishment, which were the Americans Citizens who refused to reject the false accusations being too many innocent Americans. So when Miller quotes "The enemy is within," he is referring to us, the people, as it's within us to make a decision.

It's not valid to make comparisons to say today's "cancel culture" mirrors the mindset and behavior of a time like the Salem Witch Trials or the McCarthy. During the Salem Witch Trials, people were being accused by children. These accusations led to the death of dozens of people. They were accused because they made others feel uneasy or acted strangely. There wasn't any physical evidence but rather a person's word against another. The same goes with Mcarthy. People were being accused because they were believed to be spreading Communism or helping the Communists nations to overtake the United States and were imprisoned. Today "cancel culture" is all about shaming people publicly through social media, based on the viewpoints that person may have. People are not being hanged or imprisoned because of how they acted or trying to spread different ideologies. The people seeking "justice" are not making false accusations. Comparing cancel culture" to these historical events is complete nonsense.

I think it might be a bit of an exaggeration to say that today's cancel culture is the same as that of the Salem Witch Trials and McCarthyism, but I can see why people would make the comparison. It makes for a solid hyperbolic comparison, but if you're talking direct comparisons, I think it's a little far fetched. What happened in Salem and during the McCarthy hearings was catastrophic and ultimately resulted in the deaths and convictions of innocent people. The scale of these two events are massive as they've gone down in history as eras of mass hysteria that threatened societies as a whole. Today's cancel culture, however, is simply a bunch of people on twitter posting hashtags about stupid stuff. It holds no real significance and is more of a nuisance than anything. It's just a bunch of people who feel entitled to have their opinion honored and attack anyone who doesn't agree with it. They're just not the same.

He believed that the irrationality of ruining a person's career over alleged ties to communism would be seen by everyone. The type of disorganization and fear that surround any social and political change can cause people to act irrationally and try to find stability in convicting others of a crime. By punishing innocent people for having communist ties, many Americans felt like they were doing something to aid in their social unrest. In reality, they were just adding to the hysteria, and further destabilizing their communities.

The Quote "the enemy is within" is true because hysteria can cause more damage within a society than most other social stressors. For example, the original problem in the Salem Witch Trials was that two childeren were feeling ill after spending a night dancing in the forest. Once this was accepted as witchcraft, the witch hunt began, fueled by the fear of the townsfolk and girls. The McCarthy hearings display this concept as well. While America did face some issues with communist countries, the idea that all Communist ideas and affiliants were anti-American was formulated by American society. People began turning on their neighbors and accusing each other of having communist ties for self preservation.

Many democrats are being canceled and publicly shamed for not agreeing with more liberal views. Americans with socialist views or communist ties were accused of scheming against America in the McCarthy hearings.

This is true based on the fact that everyone has their own inner demons. And at times, people can become their own worst enemy. When it comes to the Salem Witch Trials, the enemy within is most directly pointing to the devil. Man is inherently sinful, and without a true act of transformation from the hands of God, we will stay that way. So during the Salem Witch Trials, the enemy was their own hearts, "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure" -Jeremiah 17:9. Either you are a child of God, or a child of darkness. During present times, people are not looking at religious reasoning. The enemy within in today's culture is more referred to simply as yourself. We tend to self-sabotage, and aren't introspective enough to see the similarities between ourselves and those who have offended us.

It absolutely is. Blind accusations, extremist ideals, and jumping to conclusions in order to rid society of an evil that can ultimately never be cured are only a few of the similarities. There are real offenders, but they often get overlooked because people would rather take a spec of information and stretch it to become a problem rather than dealing with real issues, exactly like they did with the Salem Witch Trials.

They should know right from wrong and what could potentially offend others, and the individual(s) who get called out for it and get held accountable does benifit to our society because others can use that as an example of what not to do and get educated on it whatever the case may be . On the other hand it could be very dangerous , because some civilians may take it to the extreme and try to ruin that persons future , career , education , reputation , and in some cases life all together . This can be overwhelming to someones mental health and life overall nobody really deseves that because you can always educate them , then leave them as irrelevant and a lesson to others but you should never go too far because that could lead to something tragic .

This can also be true by todays trends or in celebrities, we as fans always expect our favorite artist to do well and be well behave and a good role model, and while doing that they are the best humans in the world, but they say one word wrong and it is like everyone blacklisted them. Which I don't think is a healthy thing to do to a single person.

N- I think cancel culture back then and now are similar but not the same because back then if you did not follow the same beliefs as everyone else you would be executed. But now in days executing someone is illegal to do, but instead an example could be blacklisting celebrities, meaning an audience to stop following that celebrity.

I believe that cancel culture is a little more dangerous than beneficial to our society because it limits the freedom os speech and expression. People are not really free to say what they want...well let's be honest you are never going to be liked by everyone so might as well be yourself a say what ever you want to say. In some cases this people might offend someone but by removing them/ or canceling them from social media or other platforms won't make that person change their belief. They will be hateful people in the world always we just have to learn to be more open minded, and be patient with those kinds of people who are considered to be "cancel culture".
