Why Promoting Physical Activity in Children is so Important

According to the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, being active for at least 60 minutes daily can help children:

Improve their health (both physical and mental)

Do better in school

Improve their fitness

Grow stronger

Have fun playing with friends

Feel happier

Maintain a healthy body weight

Improve their self-confidence

Learn new skills

However, although virtually everyone recognizes the benefits inherent in being active, a significant proportion of Canadian across their life span do not engage in recommended amounts of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. There is also evidence that activity patterns track into adulthood, so children who are physically active during their school-age years are more likely to maintain an active lifestyle across the life span compared with those who are not. Since low levels of physical activity during childhood are predictive of increased health risks in later life, it is important for educators to understand why this occurs and to identify strategies and solutions to prevent this decline.

http://www.csep.ca/CMFiles/Guidelines/CSEP_PAGuidelines_0-65plus_en.pdf

Therefore, getting children physically active during recess may be a great strategy to increase physical activity at school

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of providing game equipment on children’s PA levels during morning recess and lunch break.

Key Findings

Game equipment provision significantly increased children’s activity levels, and therefore should be implemented throughout schools to promote physical activity at recess.

Other intervention strategies, such as social prompts for PA (from both adults and peers) and the implementation of a games curriculum during recess, can effectively lead to an increase in physical activity and help promote a healthy active lifestyle.

Students may learn new ways to be physically active, which they can use to be active outside of school
