Evidence: “McDonald’s menu has not changed minus the addition of a few salads”.

Commentary: The lack of change in McDonald’s menu insists the idea that this fast food chain strongly listens to the wants of their customers, therefore removing unwanted or less profitable meals. By doing so, companies like McDonalds grow in popularity and gains high revenue due to the fact that many of their meal choices are of high demand from the public. Thus, if these fast food chains continue to strategically sell popular products, their industry will expand and ultimately, will lead to them becoming successful businesses. This provides closure as to how much of an impact consumers have on the decisions of large companies as well as how these decisions ultimately persuade customers into buying more of their products.

Evidence: The McDonald’s Corperation has become a powerful symbol of America’s economy, which is now responsible for 90% of the country’s new jobs.

By Eric Schlosser

Commentary: The overall message of “What we Eat” is to inform the audience about the downfalls and spread of fast food specifically across America. The author Eric Schlosser includes the evidence above to prove the extent to which McDonald’s, as an example, has traveled across the USA. Since McDonald's is an extremely popular fast food joint it is easy to identify with and relate to for the reader. Thus if 90% of new jobs in America are coming from the McDonald’s it is clear for the reader to understand just how much the growth of McDonald’s affects society. Furthermore, the reader can identify that this extreme popularity of McDonald’s may not be beneficial to society in America. With this information it generally moves the audience to gain awareness to the influence of fast food to our world and attempt to cut back their use of fast food—specifically McDonald’s.

McDonald’s has tried to incorporate healthier food options that included a 91% fat free McLean Deluxe. They, as a company, went ahead and made the decision to offer their consumers a variety of options, including healthy ones. What the consumer wants, they shall get. Yet, when people found out what was in the burger, no one bought it causing the removal of the product from their menu.

To adapt to those aiming to have healthier eating habits while still acquiring a speedy and convenient choice for food, McDonald’s made an effort to add healthier choices.

Evidence:”the entry of women into the workforce has greatly increased demand for the types of services that housewives traditionally perform.”

Commentary: In the introduction to Eric Schlosser’s book Fast Food Nation, the journalist aims to inform readers about the severity of the exponential growth of retail stores, particularly fast food chains. An interesting piece of evidence Schlosser presents is that as more women entered the workforce, fast food sales increased. As more Americans, especially women, sought additional income, they had less time to prepare home-cooked meals. This time constraint, coupled with the need for convenient nutrition, fueled the growing demand for fast food. Consequently, companies like McDonald's expanded their networks significantly to meet this need. With more people working, these companies strategically placed their restaurants near highway exits to enhance accessibility. This highlights how fast food companies such as Mc.Donalds planned and anticipated economic success.

This highlights the potential downsides of this fast food empire, and the industry. This exaggerates the potential consequences of unchecked corporate growth in the homogenizing effects of globalization. It encourages readers to consider the trade-off between convenience and authenticity, to support local businesses, and unique cultural expressions.

The statement that healthier options have started to show up and influence consumers causes fast food chains to be aware of the issue. Healthier options popping up leads to consumers examine and be more aware of their choices. This finalizes the idea that it’s the consumers choice to pick their lifestyle.
