"Stubbornness is best expressed by a musician playing something that has not been notated or fully predetermined. This is why it's different from the multiple E-major chords played solemnly in the two beautiful "Louange" sections of Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time. They express something else. Fate, maybe. Not the question of the immediate present." Ben Ratliff in Every Song Ever

This Padlet is centered mainly around the idea of the importance of a singular note in a piece. In this Padlet, we explore the repetition of the same note, sustained notes, and the overall importance and impact of a singular note on a piece of music as a whole. I use and build upon ideas presented by Ben Ratliff in the 6th chapter of his book “Every Song Ever”. Ben Ratliff discusses and debates the topic with the use of many different songs and quotes from musicians and philosophers. In my opinion, a single note can change so much about a song. There’s a quote that I will include here from an unknown source that compares the notes of a song to people. We are all our own individual notes and together, we make a masterpiece. I completely agree and reiterate that any singular note is important to the whole.
