Around 85,000 troops simultaneously attacked against the five major South Vietnamese cities. The offensive got it's name because these attacks occurred during the Vietnamese New Year holiday.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was preparing for the march on Washington when he was called to Memphis, Tennessee, in order to support a workers' strike. He gave a speech on the night of April 3rd at Mason Temple Church in Memphis of course. Fun fact, Martin had already survived a assassination attempt in a department store in Harlem on September 20, 1958. Unfortunately the following day at 6:05 p.m., King was standing on the second floor of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. Out of no where, a sniper bullet hit King in the neck. King was rushed to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead about an hour later. He was only 39. His death sparked riots in about 100 cities around the world. On April 11, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Fair Housing Act, which prohibited discrimination for sales, rental, and financing of housing based on religion, race, national origin, or sex. This act was an important follow up for the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

During the summer of 1968, President Lyndon B. Johnson had decided not to go for a second term in the next presidential election. Robert then decided to run for this position against Richard Nixon. On June 5th, Kennedy was accompanied by Rafer Johnson and Roosevelt Grier near the rear exit of the Ambassador Hotel. Sirhan Sirhan approached them with a campaign poster which was rolled up. Inside the rolled up poster he hid his .22 revolver and shot Kennedy, only a few feet away. Johnson and Grier tackled Sirhan to the ground. Sirhan was later sentenced to life in prison due to the fact that the death sentence being invalid. Kennedy's death is believed to be what began the oppression of Palestinians.

The Democratic National Convention was held between the 26 and 29th of August, in Chicago, Illinois. Delegates gathered in the International Amphitheatre to nominate a Democratic Party presidential candidate. Thousands of protesters rallied. By the time vice President Herbert Humphrey got the nomination, the streets of Chicago were filled with the people. The chaos of the convention basically did nothing to stop the Vietnam war or the presidential election.
