I learnt that celebrations were a lot simpler in past, there were no fancy decorations or big red packet. The most was a big family meal. In the past, red packets were at most $0.20. things like firecrackers and fireworks were still permitted so my grandparents played with them too.

Currently, things are still simple but things are a lot better, more to eat, the means for bigger gathering. My grandparents are able to afford better food and bigger amounts of red packets.

There were a lot more traditions that followed during Chinese new year in the past as compared to the current times. For example, some parents used to buy a new set of pyjamas for their kids to wear to bed the eve of Chinese new year, but these are not seen happening anymore. In the past, the younger generation would also be more equipped with greetings and calling the elders by their names, but it has lost its significance over the years.

In the past, my grandma would handmake the glutinous rice balls and get the whole family together to make them and other shapes. But nowadays, nobody really has the time to make the rice balls from scratch. Through the interview, I have managed to gauge a clearer idea of how Chinese New Year (CNY) was celebrated the Peranakan way back then. In the past, CNY had a larger significance spiritually, where my grand aunty was expected to worship their ancestors and elders. There have also been a shift of importances in terms of dress-style and the types of food served. Overall, CNY used to be a much more traditional concept to my grandparents, whereas now, we just view it as a time to get together and catch up with our loved ones; inclusive of some hints of our Peranakan culture through simplified versions of cuisines such as Babi Pongteh and Nonya Chap Cai.

During my grand aunty's times, neighbourhoods were in the kampong setting, where her surrounding neighbours were also of Peranakan descent. Therefore, she recalls this celebration to be a time to have fun and build bonds with those in her Kampong area along Amber Road; by sharing their similar background cultures.

the big difference is in the past there was fire crackers and in the present we use fire sparkles due to safety issues. It was easier to travel in the past compared to the present.

past: families cooked together and the females in the family will come together to put on henna and perm their hair for one another. As a family, in the morning, they will go to the mosque and pray together.

present: Now, instead of cooking together, they pre order the dishes online and opt for delivery. Many of them are busy with their work now thus they don't go to morning prayers with their family as they have their own schedule to work with.

Feelings: The interviewee mentioned that eating and preparing dishes together is important as nowadays people don't spend as much time together compared to before. Therefore it becomes a time for them to catch up with each other.

Changes taken place: In the past, families would bake confectioneries together but now they just order and during the celebration , the kids in the past would play with sparklers but now they are preoccupied with their mobile devices.

This festival was memorable to our interviewee as they enjoy cooking and baking in particular, thus in the past when they got the chance to prepare for the festival they enjoyed it. But as families move on with the times, they prefer to just order food and completely miss out on the time spent together preparing it. It is also memorable for our interviewee as when they prepared it, they spent blood , sweat, and tears to prepare it but now families focus on serving different varieties of food and they don't focus on the quality as much as before.

The traditions will continue instead of just ending off with a generation. For example, going for morning prayers together, but as times change, only the males who are not working go for morning prayers. If these memories are not kept , we won't be able to recover this tradition. Even if its kept in the books, they might not celebrate the way the tradition was celebrated before.
