Reaction to crime and the criminal justice system B by Prof. S

Identify a problem with the current way we approach the issue of crime. Then propose a solution. Your responses should be based on the book, module, or film (13th) materials. While you can be economic, moral, or psychological in your argument, you must have some sort of sociological basis (keep the big picture in mind)

The issue of crime comes with the punishments, such as jail time as well as rehabilitation for ex convicts. For instance, in the film, 13th, it highlighted the inequalities that blacks face when it comes to crimes. This is due to capitalistic America where they want to make money off of these so called criminals. They throw them in jail for small crimes and then make it nearly impossible once they come out. They have no rehabilitation programs to help them once in jail or when they get out because they want them to live a life full of crime so they can get thrown back in jail so they can profit off of them. A solution would be to help prisoners rebuild their lives after prison via things such as GED programs or technical programs to make them fully functioning members of society who do not have to depend on selling drugs or committing other crimes in order to live. We need to treat these prisoners as actual people, rather than money signs in order to get less people in prison and more people contributing to our society.

A problem I find with our criminal system is the nature and extent of the punishment we inflict on prisoners, including sentences of extensive time, poor living conditions, loss of civilian rights, physical abuse, or even death. When faced with cruel and unusual punishment and humiliation, when stamped with a "criminal" label that follows them long past their release, prisoners don't emerge as functional, contributing members of society, they often emerge as hardened criminals who embrace the label and continue their life of crime with new tricks they learned from fellow inmates. I feel that prisons should focus on rehabilitation. It should be illegal to physically and mentally abuse prisoners like we saw in the the second edpuzzle video, especially considering that many prisoners are serving sentences for nonviolent crimes. We should put more effort into fixing broken people, not breaking them any further.

The main problem we have with the issue of crime is that we look towards throwing people into jail right away as a punishment, instead of seeking other ways, especially when the crime is very minor. We are looking at prison as the first form of punishment to crimes that can be fixed, or dealt without the next of prison use. Instead we are finding ways to put people into jail, including ex-offenders. Prisoners are dealing with unsafe environment in prison which includes getting brutally beat up by guards who label the prisoners as criminals, dangerous, wrong, corrupt, dirty etc. Guards are taking part in labeling the prisoners, and making them feel like they have nothing to look forward to after prison. Guards, and even other prisoners take a large part in this by physically, mentally, and emotionally beating up prisoners. Once some prisoners get released they have a high chance of getting back into jail, and being convicted of another, or the same crime. Some people label a criminal, as once a criminal, always a criminal. Criminal records are permanent, some cops tend to keep an eye out on those have already been convicted of a crime before to find a way to get them right back into prison. This can cause people to not learn from their mistakes instead, they will learn to seek new ways of revenge, or new ways to create a crime without getting caught. I think we should bring out new ways of treating prisoners, avoiding the brutal beatings, and bringing better ways to approach people. In Norway as stated by the Norwegian guards, they simply just use words, and don’t even find any use in carrying a gun. With the money private prisons, and companies collect from prisoners, they should invest in activities that can help prisoners bring out their creativity such as; art classes, music classes, gym, library etc. These activities are used to help people prisoners in Norway, and can be useful in American prisons.

The main problem with our criminal justice system is that almost half of everyone in jail or prison are there because of drug related offenses. Though there are many different reasons behind drug offenses such as people selling drugs, using them, or making them. These people need to be helped instead of being thrown into prison and just coming back out and doing the same things again. Though I don't think a system like Norway's would work. There could be other things like education to help get them certifications and skills. But even with education and skills they might not be able to find jobs as they have been labeled as a felon. Laws also need to be changed so that drug offenses are not so damaging to people. But because of how big a business the private prison system is, it is hard to see any changes being made.

The way we approach the issue of crime varies with who committed and what they did. Majority of people incarcerated is drug related, mainly a non violent offense, yet the way they are treated inside is cruel and unusual. Majority of the people inside aren't necessarily violent but are provoked to be, whether it be by other inmates or the guards. In Norway those guys are murderers, rapists, abusers yet they are surrounded by knives and other potential "weapons" and can do whatever they want. They are socially accepted when they arrive at the prison and are able to interact and socialize to make them feel comfortable. They have resources to help them learn and make themselves a better person. Society in US prisons are just so dysfunctional, it's hard not to result in violence, whether it is between guards and inmates or inmates vs inmates. It's more difficult to maintain order due to social differences. They should give the prisoners more opportunities to better themselves for the outside, classes, work, life skills to make them more successful. keep them more occupied, have them teach each other their different skills and learn from each other.

The way we approach crime is wrong. They main question we must ask ourselves is “Why are so many American criminal.” It is because of America Justice system. In America our founding father put in our constitution that “no cruel or unusual punishment.” However in prison it is seen that prisoners are treated so cruel and inhumane. In the module on Norway prisons we see that their prison is very different from America. A solution to solving the issue as to why there is so much crime is to rebuild the respect between police and communities. There needs to be more respect between a police officer and the communities. The police needs to start gaining trust from different communities. In the film “13th” the police committed a hate crime because Oscar and his friends did not do anything but yet the police acted violently against them. The officers showed prejudice because of their race. They were just labeling Oscar and his friends because of their race. It showed that the cops did not have respect for the black community. They did not have any power against the police. If the police officers had better values and morals then it will lead to civilians having better values and moral. Thus, leading to less crime and people in prison. Respect needs to be shown and then it will be given.

The way we approach crime is really not the issue. It is the way our society is structured to begin with. When I look at Norway and their criminal system, which is slim to none compared to ours, I can't help but look at their society and the way people are raised and socialized in Norway. First off, Norway is egalitarian which means everyone is equal. Not in the communist or socialist way, but in the way that one person does not think of themselves more highly than another. This attributes to the fact that Norway doesn't have a very high crime rate and those that do commit crimes do not return to jail. This has nothing to do with Norway's jails being more like homes, or inmates living on a farm-like compound if they have good behavior, but more to do with the attitude of their society than anything. Can we get America to be like this? Probably not. But my point is, that there is no fix for the criminal justice system because the fix comes from fixing society, not jails.

a problem with the current way we approach the issue of crime is the fact that it is just an unfair system. As shown in the movie there is a pure set up in the way that African Americans are put in jail. Mass incarceration was created to destroy families in the black community by arresting many for what should not even be considered a charge. I feel like the way to fix this is to not have petty charges that are already in place such as completely taking away drug charges especially when it comes to marijuana which for a good portion is already legal in many states.

How we are raised affects how we act. The people around us shape who we are. Many Americans grow up in cities where crime seems almost normal. Young children watch drug deals on their way to school and think that it is just a part of everyday life. Most people in Norway did not grow up in the ghetto, they did not witness their neighbor getting murdered or their school being vandalized. Crime needs to be approached through communities. Fix the communities in which we live and then crime rates could drop maybe a little.

I think black people are stereotyped and more likely to get in trouble with the police solely because of the racial tension and stigma that plagues these groups. I think if we can properly educate incoming police officers and develop an understanding for all peoples, we can really come far in our problems in the U.S.

I think ever since then people were against blacks, but not all blacks are like that. I honestly seen the same amount of whites just doing the same things as blacks. Like in one of the video blacks would be the one to get arrested for possession of marijuana and whites wouldn't get arrested. I say they need to stop treating the blacks like no other. If you feel like your in danger then do anything to protect yourself but if its just because you can't stand the fact that they are actually just pulling out a wallet then you shouldn't be in the force.

Our approach to crime to is to use a strict and forceful way. The only way to get to people is by making them suffering. Suffering is the way to make people realize their wrongs and change their lives. It is true but to a certain extent. The way we approach inmates by using our power of authority is wrong. Who is to say one person is better than the other? The officer can have a police badge and still have the heart to treat people with disrespect just like an inmate can be a "criminal" for drug possession but can be super loving. A solution to all the forceful American ways is to remember what is in our constitution like Norway puts into practice. No cruel or unusual punishment. When you treat someone with respect it is more likely they will do the same. However it is human nature to get mad and upset when someone is being disrespectful towards us. For example, an officer escorting an inmate but pushing him forcefully, this will cause him to get mad and could result into an altercation.

Everyone should be treated the same and based off of the crime you have committed. It has shown over time that strict punishment leads to people not committing the same crimes in the future. However once they are released from prison they are no longer guided into doing the right thing. I think it would be beneficial to have a system that would help fellow imamates to stay on the right track so that they do not end up in prison again for committing the same crime. However if they do commit the crime again their sentence should be longer than the last time they were admitted into jail.

We want to punish these people, we want them to feel pain since they have caused pain. The problem is that when these people have been treated less than human for years and then they are released, not only have they lost all those years without anything productive to show for it, but the treatment that they endure change them. Prisons in America are not correctional facilities, they are just cages. This ties into private prisons because these businesses thrive on increase the number of prisoners they have and retaining them. They have no interest in helping these people return to society. One way we can help society is to get rid of the idea that holding prisoners can be a business. We have to remember that prisoners are people and focus on helping them.

Somehow this works for them. Here in America prisoners are very wrongly mistreated. We punish them so much that it causes a hate and being in those prisons make prisoner even more violent then they once were. They didnt gain or learn anything from being in those prisons. No I do not think prisoners should be treated they are now in America, but they way they are treated in Norway is not something I believe will work here. Instead, maybe there should be something more in between the two so the prisoners can actually benefit from being in prison and not have them leaving prison with more hatred and nothing gained.

The main issue America has with crime and criminal justice is racism, plain and simple. Black/Latino men are subjected to racism with the justice and penal system and it has been this way for decades. If someone breaks the law they should be punished but the punishments have to be fair regardless of your skin color. I also feel that once released ex-inmates are black balled from the workplace and return to the same criminal enterprising that got them in trouble in the first place.

A problem that I witness in our current way we approach crime is that we try to prevent the criminal from doing more crimes instead of dealing with why the criminal did those things in the first place. Going straight to the psychological health of individuals and figuring out why they commit crimes could help reduce the crime population in our nation. Having a cleaner neighborhood with a clinic next door could promote a healthier lifestyle for example.

A problem with our current prison system is that we are not trying to correct the behavior of these inmates positively. We are trying to punish them for their wrongdoings & scaring them into not making these same mistakes. I propose that we take a page out of Norway's book. I think it would take years & years to be where Norway is with their prison system but even just testing this out & doing it little by little I think would make a big change.

I believe a problem we have with approaching the issue of a crime is by the way we broadcast it. Crimes are being told by the news and social media everyday, but not everyone always has the facts right. This has to due with a certain person's opinions on the situation and which side they have chosen. The other problem with this is people only half listen to a story because that's all they want to hear and then these people being to "stereotype" about the crimes. If people would actually get the full facts and then create their own opinion instead of following someone else's, then I believe we would have a different approach on crime.
