Acts introduced by Federalists to prevent war. The Alien Act causes the process to become a U.S. citizen much longer. It also gave the Government the ability to deport immigrants if they were thought to be a threat to the Government. The Sedition Act made it illegal to speak or write negative things about the Government. Newspaper editors were being imprisoned and people were mad because it is a clear violation of the first amendment.

Kentucky and Virginia both disagreed with the Alien and Sedition Acts. They attempted to nullify the federal law (Alien and Sedition Acts). Both of these states thought that they were unconstitutional. No other states followed and the acts expired. The issue of nullification would still continue.

John Adams was a Federalist and Thomas Jefferson was a Democratic-Republican. Federalists believed to rule by wealthy class and to use a factory-based economy. They also wanted a strong Federal Government, to be loose about the Constitution, and wanted an alliance with Britain. Democratic-Republicans believed to rule by the people and have a strong State Government that was strict about the Constitution. They also wanted a agriculture-based economy and an alliance with France.
