Song of Illumination

MV 97 – “Listen, God is Calling”

10. Scripture Reading

John 17:10–26

A reading from the Gospel according to John. Jesus is preparing his disciples for his departure…

11. Reflection or Message

In this reading, Jesus is preparing his disciples for what is about to come—his departure, his suffering, and his return to the Father.

It is clear in this passage that we are all called to be one—God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and us, united. Jesus says this plainly. Though he is preparing to leave, he is also reassuring the disciples that they are not alone.

They are still with him, and he is still with them, for they are one in God.

Jesus is also preparing them for the reality that they will not be accepted by the world. But rather than sharing the same fate that awaits him, Jesus asks that they be protected. Not removed from the world, but kept safe within it.

Their mission continues, and their future still holds promise.

Even though their hearts would be sorrowful, they carry within them the joy of Christ. Not because the world accepts them, but because they are known and loved by the One who sent Jesus.

I cannot help but see a parallel in these verses with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community today. So many have hardened their hearts toward this community. So many try to dim its light.

And yet, their joy shines like a star. Their love, their presence, their truth, these are not separate from Christ. They are part of that same unity Jesus speaks of. Part of the same call to be one.

All the 2SLGBTQIA+ community asks for is to love and be loved. To live openly, joyfully, and safely. And in doing so, they reflect the image of God.

They are the meek, and they shall inherit the earth.

For in Christ, we are all one. And in Christ, none of us are left behind.

12. Song of Response

MV 154 – “Deep in Our Hearts”

13. Prayer of Communion

In sharing our love with one another,

we share in it with our Lord.

And in doing so,

we draw ourselves closer

to Christ,

to each other,

and to the light that cannot be overcome.

May this table bind us in unity,

not only with those present,

but with those who have come before us,

and with all who seek love, truth, and peace.

Let us be a beacon to others,

a reflection of the light that guides us.

For it is written,

“I am the light of the world.

Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness,

but will have the light of life.”

(John 8:12)

Amen.

14. Prayer of Thanksgiving

We offer our thanks to our Lord and God,

that he may be pleased with our works

and with our hearts.

May we go forward and be

an example of his love,

spreading joy and happiness

to all who need it.

We thank the Lord.

Amen.

15. Offering and Prayer

Bring forward these gifts to God,

that they may strengthen his house

and offer care and support

to our community.

May they be given in love,

and received in grace.

Amen.

16. Offering Song

MV 191 – “What Can I Do?”

17. Announcements

Share upcoming events, community notices.

18. Charge and Benediction

Go now into the world.

Show the fruits of your love,

that you may bring this blessing to all.

But remember,

do so with a humble spirit.

Let your example speak louder than words.

Make the world a better place,

and soften the hearts of all those you meet.

Go in peace,

and walk in love.

Amen.

19.
