Respecting oneself and others is a great atmosphere and allows genuine relationships for school counselors and their students, but for people in general. ŽYDŽIŪNAITĖ shares the importance of respect, “self-respect and respecting others regardless of differences; treating others with dignity, empathy and compassion; and the ability to earn the respect of others” but also the three types of respect, “differing types of respect are appraisal, recognition and identification” (ŽYDŽIŪNAITĖ, 2018). 
Another important value is to be open-minded. Open-minded perspective can include a wide range of aspects, from the diversity of the student population, to resources available and adjusting programs to accommodate the needs of the students and parent/guardian engagement.  Typically “as counselors endeavor to protect client welfare and maintain their own personal values, conflicts between these two interests may arise especially when serving an increasingly diverse clientele” (Grunhaus, Tuazon, Gonzalez, & Wagner, 2018). Being open-minded, empathic and setting personal values to the side allows students to express themselves without feeling judged.
