Leadership as a school counselor includes many traits that all educators have, but now a counselor’s goals have shifted. A counselor is striving for a student’s growth as a whole, which includes their mental health, personal health and goals, their future career ideas and goals to achieve success in their high school and post-secondary career.

Two Important Values a Leader Should Have

A huge leadership value to me is respect. Respecting oneself and others is a great atmosphere and allows genuine relationships for school counselors and their students, but for people in general. ŽYDŽIŪNAITĖ shares the importance of respect, “self-respect and respecting others regardless of differences; treating others with dignity, empathy and compassion; and the ability to earn the respect of others” but also the three types of respect, “differing types of respect are appraisal, recognition and identification” (ŽYDŽIŪNAITĖ, 2018).

Another important value is to be open-minded. Open-minded perspective can include a wide range of aspects, from the diversity of the student population, to resources available and adjusting programs to accommodate the needs of the students and parent/guardian engagement. Typically “as counselors endeavor to protect client welfare and maintain their own personal values, conflicts between these two interests may arise especially when serving an increasingly diverse clientele” (Grunhaus, Tuazon, Gonzalez, & Wagner, 2018). Being open-minded, empathic and setting personal values to the side allows students to express themselves without feeling judged.

When I asked Ms. Jackson what she would say her leadership style is, she shared “I would say that I’m a combination of affirming, coaching, and visionary. If I had to say which describes me best, I would say coaching. I’m a firm believer that people need to be built up and motivated, especially the population that you and I serve every day” (S. Jackson, Personal Interview, April 23, 2021). Her philosophy coincides with her leadership style, “As a school counselor, I accept the responsibility for helping all students. I accept their individuality, regardless of their background and other circumstances that influence their lives. I work to encourage my students to develop a future they can be optimistic about.”

The goal of the book is to educate their readers on the many parts and intricate details of emotionally intelligent leadership (EIL). First, the authors share the importance of knowing some truths of this type of leadership versus what society believes it is. For example, one that breaks the notion that people are born leaders, whereas we read that “leadership can be learned and developed” (Shankman et al., 2015). Leadership is like many other abilities, through hard work, effective training and attention, one can also become a great leader.
